In this review I'll be addressing the differences in the novel and anime.
I will also be using the translation from Dark Horse which also includes Invader Summer. I will not be reviewing Invader Summer. This review assumes you've watched the film.
Unlike the animel where the story ends on the 3rd trip the novel continues for several more chapters. 7 in total.
Stop 1: Wataru is travelling and meets Sophia,he tells her his story and how he met Johnny. Some slight changes here. Unlike in the movie how the robot continues to chase them,in the novel the robot in completely destroyed and never shows up again.
Stop
2: The strange couple travels to a place ruled by a god. A young girl named Sue and her bodyguard Little John. Sue tells Sophia about how she was chosen to be sacrificed to their god.
Stop 3: While traveling Sophia and Wataru are being chased by a cloud of reddish dust. Wataru wakes up in a hospital. As you already know, the hospital isn't quite right. Sophia and Wataru solve this mystery.
Stop 4: Wataru and Sophia travel to Las Vegas. In this town the villagers have found a way to plant food and survive on their own. The chief of the town inform the pair about a murderer, they both go to find the murderer. After that you get some nice twists.
Stop 5:Sophia and Wataru travel to a national park. This park isn't normal,as it has genetically changed animals and plants. Here they meet a strange man who can control animals and some of Sophia's enemies.
Stop 6:While traveling Sophia and Wataru decide to stop for some gas. Inside they meet a cannibal and a young black boy tied up. Sophia dispatches the cannibal and saves the young black boy. They travel to,uh..was it New Orleans...? and the boy finds his place among the villagers. Sophia's enemies continue to chase them. That's not all, they also have to deal with a monster from another dimension!
Stop 7: Find out yourself.
Story: 10/10. An original and outstanding experience.
Art: 6/10. There's not one picture of Wataru and Sophia. The image choices and mind boggling. Most of the images are shaded in pure black. This is awesome if you enjoy looking at black blobs. This covers most of the facial features and details, sadly. Maybe the 2005 re-release has better illustrations?
Character: 9/10 All of the people Sophia and Wataru meet are interesting. They all have their own goals and motives.
Enjoyment: 10/10. This is quite a page turner and is pure enjoyment.
Recommendations: Invader Summer,Darkside Blues, Vampire Hunter D, and Wicked City. read more
