Nov 1, 20085 of ? chapters read 6 of 9 people found this review helpful Far into the future, humanity has fallen under the control of an all-female race of aliens. Humans are allowed to live their lives, but at the cost of true freedom, under the tyrannical rule of the aliens.
In a series of one-shots from the viewpoints of different people, we are allowed to see what has happened to humans in a world run by the aliens. The main recurring character, Yui, daughter of an alien and a human woman, fights against the alien forces to restore Earth to its r...ightful owners and to stop the carnage on both sides.
Blue Drop is a wonderful-looking manga. The backgrounds of this post-apocalyptic world (ruined cities, torn-up coastlines) are well-drawn and so are the characters, with their simple, clean features.
There are several characters, and they are all interrelated even if we don't know why initially. Each has a sad story, one that reflects the war-torn world, each with a tragedy related to the alien invasion, how it impacted them, how it affected the people around them. Some of their stories even got to me a little, I was moved in particular by an episode following two sisters. Yui, who is related to everyone in some way or another, is an interesting lead character. While she is at most times playful, there is heavy melancholy in her smile, and the mangaka illustrated this so well with the art style. She is a deep character, and probably the only person who represents both the pain the aliens and the humans since she is a half.
There is a significant amount of yuri in this series. That is, there's a heavy portrayal of female x female sexual attraction, interaction and also romance. If yuri is not your scene, then this isn't for you. Also, there is nudity and sexual themes, so if you like your yuri flavoured with more PG tones, then maybe you should think twice before reading this.
Granted, the absurdity of some of the scenes played for service detract from what could have been an excellent science fiction manga if fleshed out a little more. Blue Drop is a great read if you enjoy sci fi and yuri. read more
