Synopsis

Hitoshi Kobe is pretty dumb, not good at sports, and extremely unpopular. The only thing he IS good at really is creating artificial intelligence programs on his computer. His greatest work is number 30, one which very accurately simulates talking to an actual girl. One dark and stormy night, a freak lightning strike causes number Thirty to emerge from his computer screen as a real girl, and sends Hitoshi's life on a turn for the crazy.

Background

AI ga Tomaranai! was originally serialized in Weekly Shounen Magazine until September 7, 1994 (1994 #40). It was then moved to Magazine Special on October 20 (1994 No.11).

The series had three Japanese printings. The first was 9 volumes long under the Shonen Magazine imprint, which was released between September 1994 and October 1997 with the subtitle A.I think so. The second was 8 volumes long under the KC Deluxe imprint, which was released between November 1999 and June 2000. This was the version translated into English as A.I Love You by Tokyopop from February 3, 2004 to April 12, 2005. The third was 7 volumes long, known as A. I Love You Full Version, again under the KC Deluxe imrpint, which was released between November 2004 and June 2005.

I own this series physically. I had gotten it on accident, and it was an absolute gem in the rough. I started reading it in 2019, and later happened to get the other 7 volumes. This is one of my favorite mangas and influenced my art style and taste in waifus greatly. Often while reading this series, I would forget it came out in the 90's because it holds up to this day so well.

Kobe Hitoshi, a young guy who sucks at sport and school, basically a loser in life who's bad luck never seem to end. But he has one amazing talent, computer programming, mainly A.I.s He created so many programs, but his most pride and joy would be Program 30, Nambe Saati, who he actually likes. The series takes the all-you-can-eat buffet approach to storytelling. Rather than refining what it already has, it chooses to add yet more to keep your attention. What starts off as a main couple, with a cast of side characters popping in to spur change, turns into an ensemble cast who's been made quirky for quirky's sake (According to the author).
