SynopsisProfessor Kawato is the new japanese teacher in the ill-famed Futagotamaga high shool, whose baseball club is composed by thugs and bullies who have been suspended for a year from all school competitions for causing a brawl during an official match. Now that the supension is over, the only club's members left are interested only in women, smoking and doing nothing until, under professor Kawato guidance, they discover a new dream called Koshien. The road to Koshien is far from easy, as they have to get back in shape, to learn how to play baseball and to win everyone else mistrust, including the principal's and other professor's one, with only a few months available. Sweating and fighting, the baseball club will find his determination and strenght, as they proceed towards their dreams, while Kawato's enthusiastic and non-conventional ways slowly change the attitude of everyone near them. I might be over exaggerating when writing this review, but I really enjoyed the first two volumes of Rookies. I find it up until now it to be a mix from Great Teacher Onizuka (The 'violent' yet 'trustworthy' teacher.) and Major (Who doesn't like baseball?), whatever season one would want it to be. Rookies started out in 1998, GTO in 1997 and Major as early as 1995. Though I might be wrong, it could be possible that the writer of Rookies was somewhat influenced by these popular titles.
Story;
The story itself is not unique, and a lot of other manga's has beaten Rookies to it. Yet I don't dislike the whole idea of the story. Pretty much to be said about it.
Art;
The art is just plain good. It's not confusing, it's not weird. It's clear and fine to view. Facial expressions and when there is action or a 'hit'/'fighting'-chapter, it's well drawn and one really knows what is happening.
Character;
Every character has it's own feel to it and own style, so it seems. Yet several characters have the same love towards baseball and one can get the 'déjà vu' feeling, something that has already happened. The same tear. You know what I'm talking about when you read it.
Enjoyment;
I love the style of GTO and I love the baseball within Major. That's why I just can't get enough of Rookies, up to now that is. Who knows what might change within the main storyline overtime, but that wont stop me from writing a nice review about the first two volumes.
Overall;
For me this manga is underrated and is definitely more worth then the 7.73 that is scored by just 49 readers on MAL. You might start to hate the main character in the progress, but that's just the way the teacher does his stuff. I for one rather have him for a teacher, then all the teachers I had in my life. Even if it forces me to move to Japan to study modern Japanese. read more

The character art is interesting, and the initial story has a little bit of momentum despite being so predictable, but after that everything really begins to drag. This manga has THE slowest rate of games of any manga ever (as much as like 30-40 chapters per one game) with massively repeated dialogue in reaction to everything happening in the games. It is literally the slowest paced manga I have ever seen.
The characters all have the thinnest personalities and emotions possible...no complexity there.

In these two publications, delinquents are subjected to teachers who are determined to change their lives for the better. Both teachers teach their students important life lessons.
The concept behind the two is very much the same, an idealistic, martial art-knowing teacher is hired by a school to take over the problem class. The focus on Rookies is on the delinquent baseball club. The mangaka's the same as the Rokudenashi Blues.
New teacher is to deal with problematic class and who will eventually change the students' lives for better.

Like many highschool baseball manga, these two both show the trials and tribulations of a baseball team with aims to go the Koshien. However the main protagonist for both of these manga isn't your typical member of the baseball team, it is the coach! Both manga focus on the work of a new coach entering a school with previous highschool baseball glory and turning the unambitious teams into successful baseball teams striving their hardest for Koshien fame through their on respective methods.
