SynopsisA very smart student called Hirama Ren, the chairman of the student council, was used to always getting the top results in his school. One day, he walked past a group of bullies, asked them to leave, and they decided to teach him a lesson: they decided to beat up a couple of guys and push the blame onto him by reporting it to the teachers. Hirama became enraged by it and decided to attain some power that could allow him to change the world to a world that he wanted: one without such pathetic people who hide from responsibilities and look for shelter from others when in trouble. Coincidentally, his vice-chairperson called him and asked if he was fine with her inviting a hypnotist for some event at school to hype up the school population. He thought it might be THE ability that he was looking for, so he agreed to it. With his newfound knowledge Hirama plans to shape the world. |

LOST+BRAIN is really amazing. Amazingly mediocre.
If that didn’t convince you, then read on.
I started this manga because I’m a massive Death Note fan and I wouldn’t pass up on something that’s similar. However, despite not having too much expectation in the first place, it still turned out to be a huge disappointment.
The story is about a genius high schooler who is good at everything, but also bored with all the things and people around him. At a school event, he discovers the powers of hypnotism and attempts to change the world using hypnotism. Up to this point, it’s almost like a Death Note clone. Heck, even the protagonist, Hiyama Ren, gives off similar vibes as Yagami Light.
I like the idea actually, especially as the manga explains further on several hypnosis techniques and explores a few psychological viewpoints. However, as the story progresses, you find yourself watching an unimaginative police investigation drama with a plot as linear as it gets, without the action. There are no thrills and no plot twists. Everything is so predictable and boring. Hiyama basically gets his way 99% of the time without anyone posing as much as a challenge. Even the Japanese police and the government readily bow down to him at the slightest urging. Of course, the brilliant plan thought up by Hiyama is to control everyone through mass hypnotism (yawns).
The story could have been much better if there was stronger opposition, and if hypnotism was used to manipulate people as pieces in a chess game, rather than dropping an atomic bomb (mass hypnotism).
As for the characters, they are all pretty one dimensional. Hiyama is capable inducing the deepest of hypnosis stages in people effortlessly. (This guy doesn’t even need to try.) Other than that, he’s just a deluded egoist. His ideals of a better world are also convoluted and laughable. Itsuki Kuonji, the (supposed) rival of Hiyama, busies himself with pointless investigations (I call it pointless because he is investigating just for the sake of it) throughout the story and makes little contribution. The rest of the characters are simply roadside pebbles.
Artwork: It is decent.
I was going to rate LOST+BRAIN a 5, or even 6 if I’m feeling kind. But alas, the ending was also extremely craptastic. Even at the very end, Itsuki just had to show up and watch Hiyama trip over his own shoelaces. The only reaction I can give is FACEPALM.
Well, enough of my ranting. I can assure you that I’m judging this manga based on its merits. If I were biased enough to bring out my Death Note scale, it would have gotten a 1 for sure. For those who have read Death Note and have nothing better to do, I recommend giving this a try. It can definitely let you appreciate the former better. For others, don’t bother. You’re not missing out on anything.

First off, I just want to say I was really excited to read Lost+Brain... However, that excitement died quickly as I finished the first two chapters. I did not read it hoping I'd find something as amazing as Death Note, but I couldn't help but only think of Lost+Brain as a cheap rip-off of it...
STORY- 3/10... Really, really not good... It's not original and it's not interesting, neither. A boy, who just so happens to be the smartest in the country, finds the world a boring and cruel place (remind you of anything? I'll give you a hint... Rhymes with "Beath Bote"). He then decides that he's going to change the world through force... Using dictatorial and communistic ways (who does that remind you of? I'll give you a hint for this one, as well... A boy... he's also in high school... He wants to change the world by force...), he decides it'll be his duty to change the world to his own liking...
ART- 7/10... Well, I have to say that the art isn't bad... It can get VERY sloppy in some places... And I mean VERY sloppy. For instance, when the student council girl is running away from the main character on the roof... Other than that, the art isn't bad most of the time.
CHARACTER- 4/10... All the characters were forgettable.... The main character (sorry, but I have to refer to Death Note again) looks like a cross between Near and Light Yagami... The other characters are your basic anime high schoolers... Then there's the hypnotist who looks like he could have been the backup singer in Iron Maiden or Judas Priest perhaps...
ENJOYMENT- 1/10 I enjoyed it... Until I read it. I really began losing interest in chapter one, but I couldn't drop it that fast. Besides, the manga looked like it had a lot of potential. Really, it was just too hard to get into... Not that I couldn't understand it, but it was too... Well... Unmemorable.
That's really all I have to say about Lost+Brain... Perhaps I'm just being too big of a dick for not reading further, but I was just so terribly bored, I had to give up... If you think I was too cruel towards this manga, I just want to say, "The truth hurts..." read more

Raito, L, Mello, Misa, the Death Note itself, all of them appear in this manga in some way.
-same protagonist
-same art style
Similar plot - high school student is bored with the world and plots how to change it for the better.
Similar art style.
Both series have a high school student protagonist who's fed up with the degradation of society and uses the series gimmick to try to revolutionize it. Death Note is great for anyone who thinks LOST+BRAIN was on to something, and LOST+BRAIN is good for anyone who wants just a little more of what Death Note had going on.
Unbelievebly similar main characters; both are top students with genius level intellects who despise the world and the people around them, and therefor reaches the conclusion that they must change the world they live in. However in LOST + BRAIN the main character uses hypnotizm instead of a death note.
the two main characters of these mangas have only one objective : to cleanse the world. actually, lost+brain is more brutal tan death note because the main character kills even his closest FRIENDS. while on death note, light only kills those who oppose him. read the manga and see for yourself!
The two main characters, Light and Ren are two smart students who live in a world that they do not like. They want to change it but not necessarily with the right way ...
So have fun!
Both have brilliant main characters who wants to change the world through the use of death note or hypnotism (Lost+Brain)
Extremely similar! Of course I must say death note is much better, LOST + BRAIN is enjoyable.
The protagonists are almost identical in every way - both geniuses disappointed by the world and the human nature, both ruthless, both trying to take control (be the gods of the new world ;-). Although the "powers" differ the rest, including the darkish atmosphere is there.
Both main characters want to change the world.
Both main characters are smart.
Both main characters are in a "psyhological fight".Like : "Light - L" , "Hiyama - Kuonjii"

Main character of Lost+ brain has the similar looks, style and dreams as Kira, but different power also setting is different - more realism. if you liked death note you will definitely like lost+ brain.

In both stories, the way protagonist tries to change the world is similar.
Both main characters are terrorists, Both use memory-wiping techniques.
