Gouda Takeo is a freshman in high school. (Both estimates) Weight: 120kg, Height: 2 meters. He spends his days peacefully with his super-popular-with-girls, yet insensitive childhood friend, Sunakawa. One morning, on the train to school, Takeo saves a girl, Yamato, from being molested by a pervert. Could this be the beginning of spring for Takeo?

You might already have noticed that Ore Monogatari is not your common shoujo manga, and I would like to give a more detailed review so that more people starts reading this despite the hideous face on the cover. Believe me, this manga is really something!

Ore Monogatari is a shoujo comedy that fits most people's tastes, maybe because it's not like anything else you've read. However, if you're struggling with the idea of a gorilla looking protagonist, you could need some time to consider.
That shouldn't be too much of a bother, though, because Takeo is hilarious. This manga shows that looks really doesn't matter.

Storywise Oregatari focuses read more

"Ore monogatari!Another shoujo manga, huh?" Well, that's what I guessed you would think.
And yes, you're wrong. One monogatari isn't your typical shoujo manga where the female character falls in love with someone super-handsome,smart and so on. NO! This is a must-read for all the manga-lovers, no matter what genre you like. You'll fall in love with the story, believe me.

Story : 10
The story is told from the perspective of Takeo a boy who's complexed by his huge appearance (he's introduced as an 2m tall and 120kg weight) and unappealing figure because his best friend,Sunagawa the super-popular guy who can make any girl blush, manages to "steal" read more

Before going into an analysis, I've got to say right now: This has been one of the most enjoyable (if not THE most) mangas/anime that I have read in a long time. Throughout the whole thing I was laughing and grinning like an idiot and I have a tough sense of humor. Even the first episode of the anime has got me hooked and I eagerly await the next. If you enjoy light hearted, no drama/strings attatched romance, definitely try this one out.

While the story remains a straight forward boy meets girl scenario, the continued play on the characters backgrounds and personalities/appearance makes a easy read more

Manga: My Hero
If you are looking for a different sort of shoujo, one with a male mc that is not a bishounen or from a guy's point of view, try My Hero! or Ore Monogatari!!. The guys in these shoujos are not like your guys in typical shoujos, in fact, they are sort of like the "other guy" or the sidekick guy in a shounen, they are Not handsome and not your typical shounen or shoujo hero. These male mcs are like the other guy or the guy who is a lot nicer but who usually does not get the  read more

Manga: Angel Densetsu
Angel Densetsu is a shounen while Ore Monogatari is a shoujo so their focuses are a bit different: one focusing more on juvenile delinquent comedies, while the latter focuses more on romance. But both series are about an intimidating looking, but kind-hearted young man wins over friends (and a girlfriend!) while primarily employing misunderstandings to keep the conflict and comedy going.

Manga: Pochama ni
Both of these stories feature protagonists who don't fall into the typical shoujo manga stereotypes. Physically, the hero/heroine look like characters that would be thrown away in the background of most other manga (a guy who's huge and intimidating in Ore Monogatari and an overweight girl in Pochama ni). They each have a supportive friend and manage to find the perfect partner who can accept them completely. I find myself enjoying them in the same way: for the refreshingly straightforward manner the characters have of facing their own challenges and romantic developments.

Manga: Densha Otoko: Net Hatsu, Kakueki Teisha no Love Story
Both Densha Otoko and Ore Monogatari start off with the main protagonist rescuing a woman on a train, but while Takeo is a huge man, "Densha" is a nerdy otaku. However despite their dissimilar backgrounds, both guys are really "pure" in their intentions and bashful when it comes to dealing with the opposite sex and both seek out the advice of friends on how to manage and improve their relationship - the twist being that in "Densha Otoko", the man "Densha" recieves his advice from a popular 2chan message board (the story is actually based off a number of threads that really appeared on 2chan).  read more

Manga: Tomodachi no Hanashi
The art is similar and their genres are comedy, romance, school and slice of life. Both stories are about a normal or unpopular person having a best friend which is very good-looking and popular.

Manga: Ochanigosu.
Despite their different premises, I find Ore Monogatari and Ocha ni Gosu to be similar especially with the relationship dynamics. Both series' main male protagonist are treated in disdain because of their outer appearance. Yet as we learn more about them, it's easy to realize that they have a big heart. There is evident romance development as the story progresses and reaches many points where we see the real personality of the characters. Recommended for fans of rom-com.
