Synopsis

As a conclusion to his serialized work Resonance, mangaka Chikara Nagai plans to kill off Lin, one of the most important characters, in an unexpected turn of events according to the popular view. Following a session of mostly negative feedback from his editor, Nagai faces yet another sleepless night drawing the last few panels of his manga.

In drowsiness, he discovers a furious Lin escaping after stealing the manga spread where he dies. Before Nagai can process anything, he gets sucked into the world of his own creation and finds himself amid a fight scene between the heroine, Satoko Miura, and the villain, "The Masque." Unable to distinguish between dream and reality, Nagai works with Satoko to search for an alternate ending to the manga, so he can find an exit and return to the real world.

Opus was Satoshi Kon's final manga before he debuted in the anime industry through Perfect Blue. The manga was axed due to the cancellation of its publishing magazine. A missing end chapter to Opus was found after Kon's death.

The series was published in English by Dark Horse as a 2-in-1 omnibus volume on November 26, 2014. The publisher later released a complete omnibus volume. It was also released in French by Éditions IMHO from June 6, 2013, to November 14, 2013, and in Italian by Panini Comics from May 16, 2013, to July 13, 2013. Éditions IMHO's translation of the manga won the 2013 Asia Critics Prize from the Association des Critiques et des journalistes de Bande Dessinée.

An enjoyable premise with interesting characters. Even if the ending was lackluster.

The series is about a mangaka that drew a series with the intention of killing one of the main characters by the end of it. Now working a deadline and finally reaching the final page that will give the climax of the series. The author gets sucked in his own manga and the main character who was supposed to die by the end of it is having none of it. Now the author needs to find his way back to the real world as well as realizing that the backstories he created may have ... been too cruel. Not to mention what happens when the villains realize that they are toys made for others amusement.

The premise of the series is fantastic. The characters are likable especially the main heroine. But sadly this all feels short lived. I get that nothing could be done especially if you read the ending but its still distraught to learn that this doesn't actually have a proper ending. I get why. I do. But that doesn't make it all better. Like I know Act age could've been something really special but that doesn't change the fact that it will never get an ending. Pretending what could have been and reality are 2 different things.

You can read this manga in 30 minutes but that's because there is no filler, It's pure quality except the underage nudity/murder part which sucks ass and feels completely fucking unnecessary. The reason this series is such a standout is due to the unique ideas and META it keeps bringing. But not in a comedic way but a clever way something that also falls naturally in the plot as the story is unfolding.

This isn't a magical perfect series. But the villain the conflict and overall tone of the series is very enjoyable to read. Like I said the ending is kinda shit but its not a big deal and honestly I'd still recommend the series.

I thought the villain was actually pretty good. But I found the 2nd antagonist to not be as entertaining. But what can you do when you only have 350 pages.

To conclude I think Satoshi-kun has created something special here. I don't believe that if this manga was longer it would be better but I don't disbelieve it either. A lot of times people get caught up in the what-ifs especially when talking about short lived series. This particularly comes up with jump series but If the series was good from the beginning it wouldn't have been axed just like all the other popular series behind it. The reason behind this series cancellation is a bit more special but It is useless to talk about what If's rather than just enjoy what we can enjoy.

There really is nothing else I can say about the series. Except you know go read it. It's pretty good.

Overall enjoyable series. Not a masterpiece but still good. 7/10

So, assuming you just ignored that warning, I'll say again that I will be spoiling the ending of Opus fully in order to discuss it, so readers be wary. If you just want a recommendation from me, this is it. Go and buy Opus on Amazon or wherever you can. It's a great read and completely worth your time, especially if you enjoy Kon's other work. Opus, better known as Satoshi Kon's Opus. is basically manga version of the 90's blockbuster movie Last Action Hero, starred by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

This time the creator of manga gets sucked inside his own work and becomes a character there. The settings remind of those seen in any battle tournament shonen where the main boy suddenly realizes the world is not what is seems and acquires a role in this newly found way of being.
