SynopsisIn the late-medieval land of Barnard, between the mountains and sea, the peaceful lifestyle of the people has been shattered by fear. Monsters known as the Dark Ones roam the land, killing indiscriminately. The townsfolk fear to venture out from their homes, and travel from town to town has become a risk to life and limb. To protect the people from this terror, several guilds have sprung up, including the Guild of Assassins and the Guild of Mercenaries. To go out into the world, or travel across the wilderness, hired mercenaries are essential.
One man has built a reputation as an especially fierce monster-killer ‹ a man known as Leroy Schwartz. A former high-ranking member of the Guild of Mercenaries, Leroy has struck out on his own. Many try to hire him for his superior skills, but Leroy has his own agenda. He has a mission to accomplish, a vow to fulfill. This vow is known only to himself, and his one companion: his sentient long-sword Ragnarok.
BackgroundRagnarok was published in English as Sword of the Dark Ones by CMX Manga from April 1, 2005 to October 1, 2005.
Sorry for my english, first of all.
The story was Initial called Ragnarok, but suffer an alteration to "Sword of the Dark Ones". If you are looking for a nice battle manga with a very decent and short background story, and some body exposure, blood, love , revange, hate, you will have it.
Leroy is the main character, this world takes place in a world dominated by "Dark Ones". These monsters devour anything within their pass, and are incredibly strong. Leroy's exemplar type of mercenary, that catch's attention of some sort of underworld guild and plus, a strange girl called Lena shows up offering him a peculiar job related to that guild and so that's how the story starts to develop.
The story might seem simple at first, but as more in to it as you keep advancing. It's a very short series, I read it online, latter on I felt the urge to buy it due the its awesomeness.
A very refined art, for the time it was made. Details can a strong point of this manga, along with some textures and a nice work with black inking tone. Characters are well appealing, and mysterious as you get to know their past and experiences.
Honestly, I like them all, specially the small girl. Things are not what they seem like at first. But if I tell you examples here, I would be ruin the fun of it!
But you can trust me, its very impressive, even for a sword who can talk and materialize.
Enjoyment / Overall: 9 or 10
I vibe a lot with how simple and fast story like this could leave such satisfaction and hunger for more. Every chapter gets more and more interesting, and the fact you can see things "uncensored" makes it even more an enjoyment!
Specially I enjoyed a lot every chapter, page, tones... everything!
PS: I would love to see an anime OVA of this series someday. read more
The concept behind both of these series are very similar. In Claymore we have the sword wielding ladies, and man, face off against mankind's enemy, the Yoma. In Ragnarok we have this same enemy in the form of the Dark Ones. With the main character from Ragnarok, Leroy, also being a claymore using fighter with a background similar to the Claymores, it gives the same feeling you get when you learn about the mankind's feelings towards the claymores. Both series deal with a sword wielding protagonist with "demonic" powers fighting against their monster enemies.
