I have a question for those of you otaku that art also interested in the art world or in anime about art students.

I have this idea for a 'slice of life' anime drawn in diffrent art styles, probably using a school or studio setting. I think it could be good, but in order to not make it gimmicky I want to include a good story and of course intriguing characters.

So, for research I've begun watching the three main anime that actually are about art students. None of the three have used the idea I have in any of their episodes thus far (GA: Geijutsuka Art Design Class might though as it is the most art informative of the three and I'm only ep. 3 deep on each series), but it seems too redundant to use this theme yet again unless I could produce a FAR better story than what these offer.

So, my question for you viewers is, what would you have liked to see in an anime about art students that you felt was lacking in this anime? Or actually, just watch would you like to see in general? Personally, what I need to make an anime enjoyable is a good or unique story line and/or really terrific characters. To be honest, while I like these anime fine, they don't give me enough of that spark that I am looking for yet. So I thought I might try to write it myself, but wanting it and actually producing it are two very different things...

Though I personally have not seen this anime, I noticed you have Honey and Clover on your PTW. Honey and Clover is about the life of art students, with the focus on life rather than art. While it may not be extremely art-informative, it is an amazing slice-of-life with amazing characters. I'm sure it would help. You may also want to look into Nodame Cantabile. For me, what a slice-of-life needs to be successful is not a unique storyline, but realistic developments and characters, and those are two great examples. Just a suggestion, sorry I can't comment on this specific anime.

Thank you for the quick reply!
Honestly, this thread is more for art anime then for this anime itself, so I wouldn't worry about it. ^_^

While I think your suggestion is on the right track, it is missing a fundamental detail of what I need. You see, I am looking for a series which WILL include that art-informative aspect. And while the aspects of 'realistic developments and characters' are crucial to me (I was surprised by how much I liked Clannad for those reasons exactly), that art-information spin is equally important.

The thing is I don't think it exists yet. So I was hoping that if enough people mentioned what they felt these anime's lacked and exactly how one could go about producing the desired results, perhaps it would be something that could be created in the future.

H&C is on my priority list, btw. I've been given some excellent reasons to watch it, so it's definitely on my list! And I was already watching Nodame Cantabile before this annoying idea popped into my head! ^__^

I'm not aware of the existence of a good slice-of-life that is extremely informative on art, maybe someone else can help you there. Information on art can be found elsewhere, so I thought you might have wanted some insight on the slice-of-life aspect, then assimilate the ideas personally. Honey and Clover does involve the art though, just not as much as you're probably looking for. As for an art informative series, you may want to try Gallery Fake. It contains some artistically accurate information and history, while containing some minor qualities of a slice-of-life. It isn't really much of a mystery as the tags suggest, if that is something that puts you off.
