To be honest I didn't really understand how the ship can traverse light years with ease, yet the messages don't. Also if it can go one way so fast why can't it come back just as fast?

To understand it - it is necessary to know the special theory of a relativity. So, just read this;) -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twin_paradox And about the ship. It has been destroyed?

I understood it fine. It was a good work but somewhat short! Very detailed animation as expected. Not nearly good as 5cm/s

Finally bought the DVD.
Animation was extremely detailed and beautiful, and a great soundtrack to come with it.
I actually understood this movie better than 5cm/s for some reason. xD
Maybe it wasn't divided into parts? Dunno. :P

Otherwise, the story was really touching and heartwarming, and I look forward to more of Makoto Shinkai's works in the future.

And we must not forget Makoto Shinkai's good friend Tenmon for once again providing the music. Those two make a good team.

Need moar Stephen Hawking.

The story was good though, the animation was perfect however I wasn t satisfied with the character design. It felt like some alternate Gunbuster remake or some kind of mecha version of 5cm/s. The story was amazing for a 20-minute-show.

Agreed. I thought the character design was subpar. And who the hell lets a 15 year old pilot a mech?

Anyway, awesome animation, simple story that packs an emotional punch
10/10 for the best OVA I've ever seen

Superb animations, too. Character design wasn't really likeable, but the environments were <3

One of those movies that you'll absolutely love but will never want to watch again simply because of how sad it made you. As for the animation, the environments and landscapes were gorgeous and used color schemes brilliantly. I didn't think the character design was that much worse than a lot of animes, except for the mecha design which was a little disappointing. However, if you're looking to enjoy an anime purely for a good story, then you can't possibly do better than this.

The conceit of this story, that the technology of travel and warfare outstrip communications technology (literally by light years) is a bit much to swallow. That and the telephone "tones" that sound when the star-crossed lovers are texting on their phones. But overall I thought it was a short and bittersweet production, with a strong concept and beautiful design.

And it's just a good love story ^_^

More like "90% of Mecha anime, anyone". Anyway, it worked for VoaDS since it make the difference in aging between the two much more meaningful than if they were both in their 20's when she left.

Another Shinkai's Distant love theme.

It has a pretty good story, and a quite nice and detailed background (done 3d which was still a pretty rare thing in 2002 anime) but sadly have horrible character design.

I wonder, does shinkai's work ever have a good ending ? It seems his anime always ends tragic. An yeah, if you compare it to byousoku 5cm, of course byousoku far much better.

I'll rate 7/10

The ships travel at or beyond the speed of light, where as data or sound cant travel nearly that fast. It's impossible even with warp speed technology. Even if they where to send data using beams of light it would still take years to receive it.

Over all I liked the movie. The ending was sad because we're left with an open ended ending. We don't truly know if the two will ever meet again and if they do how will things work out for them? She will still look 15 where as he will look much much older. We can only guess that his application into the space federation is accepted and he too goes into deep space. If this happens then his appearance will stay that of a 28 year old but theres still no guarantee that the two will meet again :(.

unfortunately, life is tragic. his work shows that you must learn to cope with sadness (?) that's how i interpret it at least. so in essence, the endings are actually the opposite of tragic

More or less this.

Character design lacked a certain something, but everything else was brilliant.
Consider also that the original version of this used Shinkai himself (and his partner) as the voice actors for the entire feature.

Lol, I'm sorry but a story based on the premise that someone has cracked the secret to FTL technology but conveniently can't use this technology for anything other than moving physical mass is... somewhat contrived, unimaginative and silly.

But it still managed to tug at the heart strings, and the characters were well developed. So it wasn't a total waste.

well if they can get the ship to go light speed because it's mass and not data, why cant they use envelo..... actually never mind I don't even care. I gave this a 5, I don't see how you can get emotional over 5min old characters. they had huge ass heads. And they talked crazy fast most of the time. A few times I totally forgot that it wasn't a flash video.

And the fact that it was animated by 1 person on a laptop really doesn't make it any better, just an excellent excuse.

Watching this made me want to dump. And you know what? My crap is better than this shit. My shit is made of even better character design. ;)

+1 Background
+0,5 Some soundtracks
- 8.5 Practically all else

Overall 1,5/10 lol

Some people said this "masterpiece". Maybe, they mean it "mastershit" ? Here my advice. Stay out away from this shit. I've wasted 24 minutes of my life.

This is my favorite of Shinkai's works.

It shows the whole star-crossed lovers that are forced apart in a much more realistic light. For one, they actually message eachother. One of my prime faults with 5cm/s was that after the whole train escapade and they find out that she's moving, they never once make an attempt to communicate with eachother.

Whereas in Voices, the two, while only recently boyfriend and girlfriend, obviously care for eachother and text eachother with what's going on in thier life.

I could sympathize much easier with these characters than I could with those of 5cm/s (except for surfer girl, I felt sorry that the guy totally just ignored her).

It's a sheer feat that in 25 minutes, we get more story, drama, and character growth than some anime don't even get close to reaching in 50 episodes.

Voices of a Distant Star is a touching masterpiece.

I honestly just couldn't take this seriously. The whole "they love each other, but from a distance" thing is sad and all, but not in this case. If she really loved him that much, she should have just stayed on earth. It would be different if she was forced to pilot it, but she wasn't. She had to have known the consequences of them being separated like that.

5/10 from me because in a way it still was kind of sad and the background looked beautiful to have been done in 2002.

This is just the type of comments that irritates me. Can't people understand a 24 minute video? Just watch, and try to understand something that should have been clear from the get go.

And people, even if you disagree with the story and their choices don't correspand with your expectations, it is certainly no reason to downgrade something. Do people who don't understand Picasso review his work? Should you downgrade a dish because it contains foie gras, when you work for PETA?

Fact is, THIS is a great anime, whether you think so or not - that is not up for debate anymore. The fact that you think it's not does not diminish that fact, but it certainly questions your standards and your tastes. So rather than going on and on about how much the animation blows, or how you cannot understand why something happened, just say think about why it is great, and why you don't think it is.

You clearly haven't read any short stories or poems. At least it seems that way.

(Hint: part of why it is great was that Shinkai managed to do these things by himself in those 5 minutes)

You don't have to try to convince us to like it cause that's not gonna happen. I'm not sure of the reasons you think its so great but I'm not going to question them or say they're wrong either. I was just surprised because I'm generally an easy person to please with anime and this one bored me, probably because I had some pretty high expectations going into it.

While the animation was a bit of an offset, I'm not going to complain about it. However, doesn't it seem a little unfair to compare the animation from a show made in the 80's to one made in 2002?

I don't really remember the animation in Dragonball to be all that bad either, but it's been a while.

I don't see much in this love story myself, but to say this is a masterpiece just because the guy did it all alone is complete non-sense!
I can understand why people don't like it - and I'm being frank and honest here.

I don't care if you like it or not. However, as I said, the reasons were in the video. It's not that hard to pay attention for 24 minutes or so.

And I don't think it is great, it is great. If you don't know the reasons, figure them out for yourself. And yes, it being a one-man job is certainly part of it. But there are a number of reasons why it is.

As I said a while back, the onus is on you to show why you don't like it. Hey, I didn't like Citizen Kane, but it doesn't mean it isn't a great film.

Time moves slower the faster you go. So her traveling at the speed of light would case her to age slower then him.

It was ok, character desings were pretty awful for Shinkai Makoto and i didn't really like the ending. But i enjoyed it and thought the whole cell phone thing was excellent

- 2 for horrible character animations
- 2 for slowness/story

6/10 overall.

I really think it would've been good if he has spend 20 more minutes. 10 minutes introducing the characters and building up some emotions behind them. Then 10 minutes making the story longer.

lol, sounds like you can only get emotional over pretty characters....

Well, on the other hand I enjoyed it, while I have to say the drawings really were a bit "eh", the story was great, with the given settings and all, their trust to each other and all.

I keep feeling like Mikako died at the end though... xD
