THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
First episode was basically awesome. Great way to start off the series. The voice actors aren't all that great but that shouldn't take away your excitement from a great episode.

This episode was very well done. It created suspense and mystery around Kenshin's character. The nonlinear storytelling was also very original. (they were not flashbacks)

Awesome. That was just really good. Excellent non-linear storytelling and amazing fight scenes juxtaposed with the child Kenshin.

Looking forward to the next episode!

Oh, I actually liked it. =] Didn't think the animation would be this good and it seems like a great way to have a peek into the Rurouni Kenshin franchise.

Definitely a great start!!! The animation was great, action was tense, as well as the atmosphere throughout. I understand why this is rated so highly, and I'm only on the first episode.

Pretty much, at first I thought I was going to hate it and subsequently drop it but it got better towards the end. It has the potential to be great. So far it's just good.

i liked it, great animation and suspense. fantastic nonlinear storytelling.

also great that the samurai, okay mainly kenshin, do what they are supposed to do: strike down their enemies and kill them, unlike in most anime, especially of the shonen variation, where the enemy is simply defeated, but not killed <.<

Actually, same here. I'm not really sure if I liked it or if I just think I liked it because, well, the rating would indicate that I should.

The animation is indeed really lovely, though.

Waay too talky. I'm hard-pressed to remember a single part of this episode where the visuals weren't undercut by someone explaining the significance of what was occurring. The second episode was a great improvement in this regard.

So, seeing as it is a very high rated anime, thought I'd watch it. Just saw ep 1, not very excited to behonest. Granted, never read mangas or seen TV series. But i am having trouble motivating myself to watch the rest. Way toomuch violence and didn't seem like much development - note I am not squeamish or anything, but at the same time, didn't feel anything for what was happening, just saw rain of blood.
Maybe I am being too harsh after 1 ep.

anyway really depressing and violent but the main character seems to lack personality

As an avid fan of Himura, and Rurouni Kenshin as a whole for longer than I can remember, as a person who's favourite manga of all time is Rurouni Kenshin, as a fan of the "sword" and historical Japan, and as a human being... all I can say is...

Wow. This version's portrayal, especially the intro sequence was simply breathtaking.

I can't believe I put this off for so long.

Grr I'm too used to English Dubs from the good ole days that it's hard for my ears to adjust to the Japanese version. Otherwise I loved this episode, a blast from the past and it's really clicking together many points made in the main series as well as Kenshin's growth between this time period and the time of the series.

Half the time I thought the story was following Kenshin's sister or something. I don't think he even has a sister, but it was due to the fact that the VA for him sounds way too much like a girl. It's obvious she didn't even try to sound like a little boy.

But other than that, it was excellent.

Oh my gosh. I expected to consider this good but be slightly underwhelmed and not understand why it's rated so highly. But no, I already want to give this series a 10 after one episode; if I do, it'll only be my second 10 thus far.

Just... just utterly amazing in every aspect. Please, please don't let it get worse.

Wow that was good.. I can't believe I'm watching this so long after watching the tv show, which is in my top ten anime of all time.

Kenshin's master's Hiko Seijuro is steals pretty much every scene he is in. That monologue he had at the beginning when saving Kenshin was epic as fuck.

It almost feels like I've heard a story like this before... Hmm..
A bit of a cliche beginning. The only survivor taking revenge.
A thing I found interesting is the things Kenshin's sensei said.
Kind of wise, and nice. It was really interesting overall, quite a
relaxing atmosphere. And I hope that girl is smart, because so
far it doesn't seem so x) They'll probably fall in love, bla bla...
The most tragic tragedy ever, yay. I hope there'll be more to it..
And uh... I like the animation xD And the blood. Yes, the blood!

It's not revenge at all, it's a boy with a heart too pure, he is taking a path of bloodshed to save the dying era in the quickest way possible, because too many people are sad and suffering ("For the greater good" type of idealism). He is participating in a "war" as an assassin, there is no revenge attached to it; only objectivity. Did you miss his words when he dug all those graves (with those dried up tears T.T) ?

Sensei: "I've noticed you've made graves for the bandits as well as your family."

Shinta/Kenshin: "After they died, there were no bandits or slave traders. Just dead bodies".

--

Not attacking you, just clearing that one thing up. Glad you've decided to watch the series (your other comments are fun), keep on going :D.

This was great. The storyline is very good. The symbolism was great with how he had the cut that was bleeding when the guy's wife saw him at the end. The themes were very interesting as well.

That girl, wasn't she the one that was supposed to get married with the guy Kenshin killed at the beginning? Maybe I'm mixing them up. But in the end, it can only end tragically :|

Anyway, talk about a nice start. It look a bit rough on the edge, but the overall style is really interesting. The fighting is really exciting, short paced action. The scenery is also great, with the light effects from the sun or the moon.

I expected this to look very beautiful but it really is one of the most gorgeous anime I've ever seen. And Kenshin himself is so well done, him and Seta Sojiro couldn't have been more alike: cold assasins with gentle demeanour who intensly believe that their way of life is right. Kenshin's ideals are so noble, but his actions are terryfing.

I am not a Kenshin fan, but this was actually quite good. It kept the pace quite well and was not childish.
