I would like to see some in depth discussions on genres such as slice of life, mecha, shounen, and shoujo if at all possible. These discussions let us relate to one another and help us build bonds as we show interest in shows and give our opinions about them.

wonder if we'd be able to remain civil...?

Topic of the day: Is moe the cancer that is killing the industry?

watch the flames fly!

Well when put that way yeah things will go down in flames. I was a member of a previous anime club and I just have very good memories with that club and just suggesting ideas they did while I was there. But yeah loaded questions like that would cause people to possibly explode.

Well prepare to learn for I learned from the best! Moe (pronouced Mo-a) is rooted in the japanese word to blossom (as in flower but is also the same word for burning more on that later). Moe are traits of women blossoming into womanhood. Essentially they are turn ons or what makes you hot for women (the burning double meaninng). Types of moe include: glasses, big breasted, small breasted, clumsy, tsundere (a girl who goes cold to hot and hot to cold toward the guy they like because of conflicted emotions/responsiblities they might have ie Full Metal Panic!), and any thing else you could find attractive or an indicator of a girl becoming a woman. As Josh has so graciously pointed out due to the over saturation of moe within the industry anime is actually being chocked by it. However, this is no different from battle shounens of the early 90 (G Gundam anyone), harems of the mid to late 90s (Tenshi being the most famous), bishonen (Final Fantasy VII and Gundam Wing), ext. For me its a fad that I thnk will eventually become a healthy part of anime. Right now its the new and exciting thing to put into. Characters called moe blobs have arose within the last 6 years or so such as Oriheme from Bleach for instance is such a character with so many moe traits she doesnt even form a cohesive character. Animes featuring moe include: The Melancholy of Haruhi Shizumya, Lucky Star (a don't watch warning issued for that one unless you REALLY get into moe it has a lot of inside jokes about animus too so you might want to increase your power level before watching as well),Chidori from Full Metal Panic!, Yoko from Gurren Lagann, and the list goes on. Sometimes people feature 'male' moe such as Teiria from Gundam 00 features 'male' moe. If we had a discussion on moe, I could bring much more information on the subject via the internet. Discussions on subjects allows members to learn interesting things they might of not heard about the industry. This learning will then open you up to more anime and expand your horizons. That is my argument for including discussions into meetings, and you helped illustrate why they are needed. Even I would like to learn facts and trivia I do not know and watch a series pertaining to that catagory of anime I have neglected. Well I hope that was informative and hopefully we will meet soon for I was an idiot and apparently screwed up meeting times and such. Peace.

That was really informative, thanks.

in that case, i could understand how some could see moe destroying the industry. Since most shows coming out would only have medium - large breasted girls who really can't defend themselves in a show where even a 10 year old can fight (i.e. dbz) Moe could add romantic relief(?) to the show that would otherwise be all action-action-action.

Oh, sidenote, has anyone read the fanmade dragon ball af manga? It's pretty decent.

That is completely true that moe adds romantic relief/comedy again look at Full Metal Panic! (FMP) Both Tessa and Chidori are full of moe. Both are tsunderes but for different reasons in addition Tessa is clumsy moe. DBZ came out before the advent of moe so no characters in DBZ couldnt be considered on purpose to be moe. The start of moe some say started with Card Captor Sakura and has since expanded. Plenty of shows also offer small breasted moe. Kannagi and others feature a girl who is underdeveloped for their age >.>' If you had to watch THE moe anime. Go with Haruhi, if you have already watched it and you want another show to watch that is moe there are plenty of options. FMP if you like mecha, Kannagi if you like school girl animes, K-ON! if you like your main characters to suffer from down syndrome (moe blobs), Maria Holic if you like traps (men who look exactly like women and you can never tell the difference), ext. Some of the moe is subtle others are blatant. There is plenty enough out there for you to try.

Well, next week when I get the times right I will talk let me tell you I will have my power level on full display, and I will encourage cross talk. My expertise is in mecha not in moe, shoujo though I could go on and on about shounen, however, so i dont know what people think about that genre. There is a difference between real robo and super robo that people I believe don't see the distinction. Also, there are no more manly shows that super robo shows. El_Tigre watch Gurren Lagann and if you like that then watch GaoGaiGar then GaoGaiGar FINAL. FINAL is so awesome I cannot recommend that enough.

I never really thought of Yoko being on the cusp of womanhood. Granted huge tits but I think a better example from that anime would be Nia. She's got a lot of the traits you mentioned.
