THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
No topic of the day. This is AFAIK the one and only serious chapter of the anime. Who could have thought a series so zany, crazy and nonsensical could suddenly become serious and be good at it?

I cried when she got shot. The fact that:
1)She was banging on the door until her fists where BLEEDING!
2)She had a very depressing (and somewhat distirbing) speech when she was lying on the ground BLEEDING!
3)Her last words in the end of the episode where "Lord... Il... Pala...zzo?
DID NOT HELP AT ALL!

You know, come to think about it, the difference between Excel Saga's sudden drama and K-on's equivalent is how they handled it.

Arrrr! Here there be spoilers for K-on, me hearties!

Well, gotta say I was surprised they pulled this off. I really liked how Excel was in this episode even though I love her usual crazy self too.

I can't take it seriously, I found some parts funny despite the tone it was trying to go for. I wonder if the whole inner conflict with Il Palazzo is taken from Saint Seiya and the Sanctuary Arc, a reference to Saga the Gemini Saint. There are plenty of inner conflicts in anime to be parodied but I thought of that one when I saw this.

Well ofcourse they still left in some gags. Still a bold and respectable move.

No this can't do the more serious genre....where is my hyper active excel?!? where is the girl that just stands up after every blow and waltz right through everything doing more harm than good in the process?!?

Where is Nabeshin when you most need him?!?
