THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This is the episode where you really see how disturbing Hawk is. Pretty much how he and Miguel meet is a lot like how Takamura and Kamogawa meet, but way more screwed up. And I'm sure some people won't be able to accept some reasoning behind Hawk's violent nature, but I thought it was hilarious. I enjoyed how Ohtsuka delivered the line, "GIVE ME MY LICENSE TO KILL!!!" And I'm also glad this episode finally included more of his Engrish like "It's a showtime" and "Go to hell."

Another poorly handled episode for this director's score column, whether it's the poor music direction, the music itself, or just handling the scenes, he just can't seem to get it right. The music once again managed to kill a lot of the emotion in this episode, hawk for example has an ominous past so when his past is first show you would think ominous music would be a no brainer, but no instead we get this seasons 'OKAY I'M GONNA WIN' music playing instead. Why they couldn't have just stuck with the old OST from the start of this series i don't know, it was the perfect soundtrack to ippo.

About the way the scenes are handled, half of the time i feel like i am watching a slideshow, the director sticks close to the manga scenes during the fight most of the time scene for scene, thsi should be a good thing right? but no it's not, as following a manga scene for scene in a fight ends up with a lot of things coming across stupid, such as how one minute Taka will be in the corner but next he is in the middle of the ring then all over the place, then he is hurt but suddenly he's in a barrage, then he punches hawk it has no effect, hawk is smiling, then from nowhere OMG he's falling! now he looks worried!, oh he's fine again now

basically what i am getting at is it just looks stupid a lot of the time, as usual i know a lot of people will disagree with me but hey thats my opinion, oh and it seems the fight will end next episode, so how they can manage to flesh out the little material before the K&N backstory arc to fill 2 episodes will be interesting.

Overall 3/5 for this episode

blame it on the fact that they keep on delaying the trigun movie is why nishimura and imahori's touch is not in this installment

@callmeagnew:

you really need to go watch something else if you're gonna complain about every god dam thing. this episode was awesome as hell. and what's wrong with sticking with the manga? isn't it what the anime is suppose to do? just nitpicking shit for the hell of it, arnt ya?

wish I could give this ep a 10/5, but, I can't. so 5/5.

Much as I'd like to agree with this season's defenders, I've found the quality of audio in NC to be a step down from the original. Some of it's the soundtrack, but that has been getting better, to the point where I'm alright with it. What really gets to me is the voice/acting and dialogue timing. In this episode more than ever, I felt like the dramatic lines (esp. with Kamogawa and the other boxers) during the soul brace scene were simply being read too fast to create the kind of drama this deserved. It felt like they were speed-reading, and the crying was totally fake-sounding because of it. Even though the vocal cast it the same. Especially after rewatching Kaiji's human derby arc, which was done by the same studio. I actually cried at this scene in the manga, but here it just sort of whizzed past.

Don't get me wrong, what has happened here is still very high quality on average, just way below what I consistently got out of season 1. In this season, there's a lot of blood-boiling moments, but not so many emotionally moving ones.

Also, I still haven't seen that 25 episodes thing anywhere but here. Does anyone have a collaborative source?

yea, I do agree with you about the music definantly being a step down from the first series. can't argue that at all. but the music has somewhat grown on me, and I enjoy it a lot more, especially these past episodes.

and I can respect the rest of your post, as well.

Another pretty good episode it feels kinda weird to be seeing Takamura in the position he is in.

I somewhat agree that the total package of New Challenger is not up to where the first series was, mainly because such quality is very hard to match. The music isn't as great and the moments maybe aren't as impactful, but that is somewhat contributed by the poorer music selection, but this season is still very high in entertainment value. Although not as intense this show still provides great action and its humor is still fresh.

in the manga chapters, it says that we are now at the climax of new challenger...

....if it's only 26 episodes then as a fan of the manga, i am being cheated as fuck

hopefully, it's just a ploy to bring back nishimura and imahori

Agree with callmeagnew.

Music isn't the biggest problem. Direction could overcome misplaced or mediocre music, but it is definitely exacerbating the clumsy direction. I personally don't like the idea of Hawk having monstrous red eyes, further depreciating whatever humanity is in him. He's just so comical that I can't take it seriously. I can't even really entertain Takamura loosing since there isn't a bit of pathos to be had with Hawk (unlike most every other opponent).

I said it in the beginning, but this visual style for NC is much more on the side of Kaiji than it was the first season of HnI. I really don't like it. But at least I have a stronger appreciation for the first series.

At this point, I want this fight to end.

@ noteDhero - thanks for actually not just dismissing my opinion from the off and actually offering some discussion.

@ the people who complain about what i have to say, it's an opinion thats all, it just happens i can't accept any old shit like everyone else, if an episode is shit i will point it out instead of just typing 'OMG IT WAS THE BEST!!!!11! 5/5!' like someone who thinks bleach is a top tier shounen.
