Yep, one of the reasons why I like Gon's reaction in this episode so much since it was so consistent with his characterization up until then and revealed him as ticking bomb waiting to explode. It was a very intense episode but without a fight which is quite surprising. Now that I think about it, I genereally like when an episode can keep me at the edge of my seat without any fight like in SNK when (anime spoiler)

He doesn't know the girl, from Gon's perspective, she could as be just as evil as The King and Pitou, he has no reason to trust either of them especially when Kite was destroyed in front of them and the Chimera Ants main objective is to enslave a whole nation and later take over the world.

Gon deserved to be slapped in this episode, it was the first time it felt like it, and it was freaking annoying.

Maybe if we didn't know the relationship between the others that'd be ok to watch, but like this it is painful.

Can people really take this episode? My greatest anime regret this year would be picking up HxH. I already knew that I will hate the show because the protagonists are kids. And I can't take any drama seriously involving kids which subsequently lead to me hating the entire series. Killua is cool though. Body of child and mind of an adult. But Gon is just fucking annoying. Last thing I want is a annoying main especially for a long running series. Previous year biggest regret was guilty crown

Watching this episode make me cheer for Pitou instead of Gon.

But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

in the last couple of episode discussions i've laid into hunter x hunter for being slow and nothing really moving along, narrator being annoying etc etc, but there is nothing i can say other than this episode was probably one of the most emotional, intense episodes of anime i've watched in a while!

Just.. wow, gon's voice actor/actress was just sublime, and even Killua, his facial expressions and mannerisms, you could see how much he was breaking, fair play, to bring out an episode like that is just phenomenal I can't lie, previous episodes haven't been that great, but this one almost made up for it!

Also judging the response this episode has received (went from 8 pages to 26) everyone else agrees!

Most people agree, some don't. You will witness even better episodes, just be patient and the pay off will be great

Really intense episode. I actually wrote a few paragraphs but deleted it because the story's so intense that I'd rather continue next episode than think anymore about the current miserable point

Tldr Killua makes the sacrifices in their friendship, he needs to stop letting/enabling Gon to be that selfish, and Gon is being the type of asshole we can understand. Everything was beautifully drawn.

I have no words. There are almost no words for me to describe this episode. Endless rage. I really feel Gon. And like a lot of people here said the scene with Kite was so creepy. I hope he will get his revenge. Poor Killua :-(

God this episode was amazing. This arc is really challenging Gon and Killua and pushing them to their limits mentally.

Gon has been getting on my nerves this arc, Killua saying Gon is selfish is so true. He was almost blowing off Komugi (who is freaking innocent) together with Pitou. He has done nothing for the people of NGL while Killua was rushing around alarming people. This brat..

2. Is it better than Breaking Bad?

4. Has it caused a (very entertaining) shitstorm on MAL?
5. Is it actually good?

Gon was like another person here. Gone (pun not intended) is the cheerful, happy kid we saw in the beginning of the series. Gon has become something of a monster, from totally human emotions.

The role reversal here is incredible: instead of the conventional evil villain threatening the hero, we have the 'villain' in a helpless state and begging the hero to let her save someone, and the hero being the one who desires violence. The role reversal extends to the beginning of this arc as well: Pitou started off as the alien, inhumane monster, slaughtering Kite mercilessly and scaring Gon and Killua out of their minds. Now Pitou is the human one; she wants nothing more than to save a life for the sake of someone she cares about, while Gon is the one who looks like a monstrous psycho. Brilliant.

Look at the part when Pitou tells Gon she's trying to save Komugi. He keeps repeating her words over and over, with dead eyes. He can't comprehend it, can't grasp the idea that the person who he harbors so much hate for, that he thinks is a terrible killer, is trying to save a life. He can't understand Pitou; his whole world view is shattered. This is no simple situation, and Gon tends to looks at things simply. The purity of his personality is a bug factor as to why he reacts the way he does. In Gon's mind, if he likes you, and you've done nothing bad to him and his friends, you are good. Otherwise, you are evil. Pitou fits in the latter category, and now he discovers that she's trying to do something honorable, something noble. If he kills her now, he'd be the real villain.

It drives him insane. His suppressed emotions have no outlet, and the small, rational side of him knows he can't attack Pitou now. As he says, it isn't fair. Look at the way he lashes out at Killua- he tells him that it most be nice to be so composed because this has nothing to do with him. It's a childish attack, really, born out of a desperation to let out his feelings in some way. Despite his rage, Gon is very much a kid. That's what makes him so dangerous.

All of HunterxHunter has been about this, has been building up to this; Gon's loss of innocence. He was the sole main character who hadn't suffered any major loss, before all this took place. Leorio's friend died when he was a kid, Kurapika lost his clan as a kid, and Killua was raised an assassin. They all experienced something traumatic that forced them to grow up- all except Gon. It's his turn now. This whole series is a coming of age story, but it's a twisted one. Instead of the usual story of a character growing up to become a brave, great man or woman, this is about the transition from childhood to adulthood, and the most important aspect of that transition: a loss of innocence. Throughout his journey, the grim reality of the world that Gon lives in became clear to him. It's not a coincidence that all of his opponents are always adults, that adults are always the ones behind the greatest evils in the HxH world.

The parallel in this arc becomes obvious when you think about it. The King, the one who is supposed to be the Big Bad, has become more human, while Gon, the supposedly cheerful, optimistic hero, has become more inhumane. It's not only a fantastic twisting of shonen tropes, but also an excellent tie-in into the arc's overall theme of the nature of humanity.

This episode gave me freaking chills. Gon's character development is amazing. I think back to the exam arc and how the kid was just too damn nice and cheerful all the time and now he's grown and seen so much and he has all this pain and rage inside him.

My heart collapsed when he told killua he must not care since he was acting so calm. And the look on killuas face was heart breaking.

I dont think we can really judge Gon for how he's acting tho. I mean it's not like hes having a tantrum over losing a toy...he wants to avenge his friend and a lot of the anger is because he feels guilty and now probably confused that this creature he was so sure was evil is showing a humane side.

*Claps* Didn't expect Gon's torn-apart mind to affect me this much. When he was starting his Jajanken and Killua stopped him, saying that Pitou might be able to heal Kite, I was half-hoping that he would say "No. I've always known Kite is dead," and proceeded with the attack.
But in the end he's still Gon. The hopeful Gon. I could feel, though, the tremendous growth he gained from seeing an accursed enemy in that state, knowing that he is on the upper hand, and having to weigh on channeling his anger or following that path of idealistic hope. Yeah, in the end he's still Gon.

In another hand though, it simply confirmed how black and white the Royal Guards are. They are not even as multilayered as the King. They are simply following what he ordered to do, and that irks me a lot because it could send off some false vibes of sympathy. There is no such thing. They're simply following orders.

Brilliant episode! Im getting all teary up. Yess i would agree if Gon just smack Pitou on her face. Its really not fair after what she had done to Kite, why must this time when Gon so fired up to kill her, WHY MUST THIS TIME she had to heal people. Gon must be soooo f-ing frustrating!! Ugh!
But at the same time, Im also agreed that Killua stop him. Yes, Gon should not said that Killua didnt care but considering Gon is not in his right mind.. Killua.. T_T
Gon, u know all Killua have ever cared is only u,Gon!! Ugh this feels!!!!
I think all their expressions, their feels, their actions in this ep were just perfect!

Internal conflict is nothing knew with Gon. So it was a meh episode. Predictable really.

The mission at hand transcends Kite. The lives of his comrades are at stake. Like Gon said himself, they are going off "probably and likely". Pitou's Allegiance is to the King and no one else. Pitou can crush Gon and Killua.

At least accept the offer of taking his legs and hand for godsake.

But Gon is not a man-child, he's a child plain and simple. I don't even know why you would hold him to the same standards as characters who are 10 to 20 years older than him.

Well dammit, not getting anywhere with the fighting I see.

And Gon has gone completely out of control due to anger, which was pretty intense to finally see.
But other than that situation happening, Pitou's reaction towards Gons anger episode was quite amazing to witness, from her facial expressions to her voice and willingness to give up her arm or both legs is just an amazing show of how loyal she is towards the King, outstanding side of the character that I really enjoy indeed.

thing is.. will she keep her promise that was made to heal Kite? or find some kind of way to take Komugi and get her to safely? a lot of situations run through my head about that.

we'll see what happens.

I love this episode. One of the greatest episodes I've seen so far.

Gon's out of control anger is understandable enough. Killua, being the voice of reason is also expected.

But, Neferpitou's resolve to save the life of Komugi is quite unexpected.

And when the three finally met..... You're treated with genius writing.

While I do understand Gon's anger, he was so out of control this episode and I honestly wanted to smack him in the face. He needs to realize that by rushing/killing Pitou, he not only cannot get Kite back, but he is trading Komugi's life.
