If you also think the availability of visual novels for the Nintendo DS is lacking,
this might interest you. :)
I accidentally came across this homebrew program when I was just googling for some visual novels. I'm not sure if it runs on emulators, but with a flashcart it works fine on your DS/lite.
The following novels have already been ported, most even include sounds and some of them come with the voice pack as well.

Tsukihime
Narcissu
Anon's Nice Day
Fate/Stay Night
OMGWTFOTL
True Remembrance
Saya no Uta
The Letter
Red Shift
Plain Song

There is currently being worked on Clannad, Kanon and Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, just to name a few. So, that all sounds very promising, right? I'm currently porting a novel as well, might take a while to finish, though.

I tried running F/SN on it.
It's a decent idea but use it only if you go on a trip and don't have a laptop or something.
otherwise it's really good. you can download Visual novels without the help of a computer.

So Higurashi is coming out with another DS game for Japan, or is it coming out in
English in America?
Also, shouldn't Ouran High School be added to the list? Unless these are only games that are available in english.

They should add one on the iPhone IMO. iOS VNs could possibly raise the popularity, since I don't know a family without an iPad in my area.

I was going to try this out, but then I realized... Most of the time when I read visual novels, I'm at home anyways, so why play a compressed version on my DS when I can play the real deal on the PC? Well, I'm sure this would be useful for those lacking the resources to do the latter. AFAIK, I heard Ever17 was completely ported a few months ago.
