On the subject of what I liked about the show, I might as well quote verbatim from a one of my blog entries: Balsa's pragmatic, calmly maternal character, united with her brutal killing ability - she's like Ghost in the Shell's Kusanagi, only more badass: Kusanagi has the arsenal of a small country to back her up, while Balsa manages with what is essentially a piece of metal on a stick. The animation varies, but at its best it's Haruhi-level. The soundtrack, with its enchanting rice-planting song, fierce drum melodies and lilting calmer tunes. The scenery: Hunter's Cave, the vast spaces of the Palace, the hallucinatory almost-realism of the spirit world, and most especially the Star Diviners' secret library, easily the best fictional library since The Name of the Rose. Tanda and Shuga, two different and superbly-characterised intellectuals. Chagum's physical and mental growth. The Eight Warriors and the swordsmith. Filler that turns out not to have been filler after all. I could go on and on . . . The ending was well done. It had enough of a feeling that life (for all the characters) would carry on after the series, but also a good sense of resolution, since The action challenged the final fight in Cowboy Bebop: Knockin' On Heaven's Door for brutality and brilliance - yet this wasn't even primarily an action series. Quite remarkable. If I have one criticism of the series, I think it would be the pacing. At times events seemed to move a little too slowly, although there was a kind of pleasure in a show which was prepared to slow right down and make you enjoy something like a travel montage. |

I kind of like all the characters in that anime. All of them were well developed and very interesting. But if I have to choose a favourite one that would be Balsa because she has many contradicting characteristics mixed in her. She's probably the one that makes the strongest impression. As for the anime - I can say that it's wonderful in every aspect. It has an incredibly beautiful animation and really nice OST, especially the song "Nahji no Uta". Also I liked the story because it was a bit unusual. But what impressed me the most were the battles. They were absolutely flawless >_> I think the end matches perfectly. I didn't expect Chagum to stay with Balsa (that would have been naive) but it was a bit sad that he wouldn't be able to see her again. In my opinion that end was the one which everybody subconciously expect from some point on... |

I agree with Leuconoe regarding the pacing. I almost stopped watching the series in the beginning because of the frequency of very slow-paced episodes. But I decided to keep on with it and I'm very happy that I did. Later on the series I was glad for the slower-paced episodes, such as their life in cave and the story of Jiguro. Those were some of the most brilliant episodes of the series. In the end, I am glad they took their time telling the story as they did. My favorite character was Balsa, although Jiguro was a fascinating character. I would love to see a movie or OVA all about him, as a prequel. Before he met Balsa. Of course I loved every character. Everyone was well developed and complimented each other very well. Even if I didn't like a certain character for doing something (Shuga), in the end they were still a great character. I was sad about how to series ended. How could you not be? But it was the only way that it could end, and I'm happy with it. Although she and Chagum's stories have diverged as they go down different paths, I do want to know more about Balsa's life and adventures. I'm sure that she doesn't settle down right away, but I think that would be the true conclusion to her story. I'd like to see a movie or OVA that tells the story of Balsa, perhaps as she is forced to return to the country of her birth. So many possibilities. <---made of awesome! |

I love Nahji no Uta <3 And I also found Jiguro fascinating. I wasn't expecting to, since he was a side character, but they made him sound intriguing. |

I will have to think on this question for some time, as this series has a thick and rich cast of characters. |

Favourite characters: Balsa, Tanda and Chagum I liked the ending, tho I liked this serie so much that I felt like wanting more anyway XD. I wish there would be some OVA or special about what happened in few years after ;P. I loved the story and animation, characters were interesting too ^^ and fights were awesome, altho there were only few of them ;3. Hmm..... can't think of anything that I didnt like there, maybe except episodes being too short, cos it always finished so fast for me and made me w8 next week for more ;x. ![]() |

I think the ending was happy enough. The entire serie had it's focus on Balsa being a bodyguard and chagum being the guarded prince. It would have felt strange if balsa took off with chagum because of non-existing feelings. What I liked most about the serie is that it didn't turn out to be a fighting anime but rather an adventure anime. And it's pacing was just right. I liked torogai the most, but I've always had a weakness for side characters. I would have liked if the writer explained more about touya and saya, but the same goes for the more of the side characters. |

My favorite characters: 1. Balsa, for being so determined in protecting Chagum and in actually keeping her word till the end. There was a scene which I liked quite a lot. 2. Chagum - I liked the way he matured throughout the series. His demeanor gradually changed, he became more assured and bore with his fate quite well. 3. Tanda - For bearing with Balsa and her endless journey. 4. Sagum - Even though he was a secondary character, I just liked the way he accepted his role of Prince and did work. The ending: It would have been too easy for Chagum to stay with Balsa. She came into his life in a time where Chagum needed her. I hope there is a second season or an OAV. It would be int What do you not like? I guess I would have liked some more depth to the Balsa-Tanda relationship but again it was not about them. Overall: I think the series was quite well made, not overdone but still subtle in the way it exposed the characters. I wonder whether they will make the remaining novels. |

Who are your favourite characters? Well.. Balsa of course, only cause episode 13 totally reminds me of a friend and how she always describes herself as a tiger around her kids. How do you like the ending? Thought it was a great ending, didn't read the manga so not sure if it's in line, but I thought it was probably the best way to sew it up as a one season run. What do you not like? Nothing.. I loved it, watched it all in one straight run. ~TS~ |

I love Balsa I hated the ending(not really). I hoped that they would be a real family in the end but no such luck. They could have at least put Balsa and Tanda together. I loved it all. |

balsa would have to be my fav character with jiguro coming in second. but all of the characters were developed well and were made realistic so i pretty much liked them all. i really was impressed by the scenery and character development. the ending was the most realistic choice, although i did wish for them to all run away together. i have nothing against tanda, but i didn't want him and balsa to end up together (at least not romantically). overall one of my favorite animes. definitely gonna have to get the novel when it comes out. i hope another season gets announced soon. |

This season is based on first book the novel, so we should see more about Balsa. Maybe next year I hope. |
