| What is the difference between the words Nyanko and Neko in Japanese? Are they interchangable, like kitty and cat in English? Please only respond if you really know for a fact - I'm studying Japanese, and I'd really like to have my words straight. Thanks so much! |
| Any online dictionary would quickly clear this up. Neko = cat. Nyanko is more slangish, like kitty, and is derived from the "nyan" or meowing noise they make. Saying nyanko would sound idiotic in normal conversation, unless you're talking about these guys. And I've had normal conversations about those lovely, tasty little nyanko products. |
| Neko means cat. Literally, proper translation. Nyanko is a cuter way of saying it (Nyan is a onomatopoeia for meow, ko = child). So yeah, nyanko is like 'kitty' to us as opposed to 'kitten' (koneko). |

'schmancy' is an idiosycracy of the language and it is really just a way to make a rhyme of the first word. it's the sound that is desired and it means actually nothing. It's just there for sound effect. It's like calling a person 'dorky worky' worky is a non word. |

Yeah, I've used neko and koneko a million times, but I just heard Nyanko in an anime for the first time (that I've paid attention to, at least - I'm new to watching w/o subs). It's just not in my books or dictionary, probably because it *is* slang. I was just curious as to why you'd use that and not Neko. You cleared it up a lot! Arigato Gozaimasu! |
