This show is about Mahjong and for the ones who never played it before, it can get very confusing, do any of you understand the stuff they talk about in here?

Edit: Poll Fixed.

Is it that hard to pick up a few guides from the internet?
It's easy.

You screwed up the poll. ;)

And yes, I play mahjong. Not as frequently as I'd like to (my RL friends aren't really into it), but occasionally.

Oh I did? >.< I was actually in a hurry and rearranged the options. I thought the choices were reasonable, but guess I should have added an option that said 'I play often' or something. Darn the no edit button. >:|

Wasn't that "I play frequently" in the poll title supposed to be an option?

I found this video tutorial for anyone who wants to learn.
Hope this helps!

Yes, I suppose so, I guess it was mislabeled or something. Maybe a moderator can change the options.

I know some of the terminology and basic playing but that's pretty much it. Can't read or manipulate hands yet. Actually, now that i think about it, i don't know how to setup a game either since the programs i play with does it all for me lol.

I tried finding a program to play Mahjong with, but most of them are just the Mahjong Solitaire versions, which is obviously not the same as the Mahjong played in the anime.

I remember when i was little i used to see a whole bunch of my relatives gather around in the living room and play mahjong on weekends. It was hella noisy and impossible to do or watch anything without the obnoxious noise of mahjong pieces moving around. Well to me it never felt that interesting cause i guess to me it feels like what old people play when they got nothing better to do. No offense to those who actually play it though heh.

Japanese riichi mahjong, single player. This game pretty much does everything for you, including counting and telling you when you can riichi, kan, pon, chii, ron, tsumo, furiten and some other terms I barely recognize. Very addictive, to say the least.

Also, regarding that 70 fu 2 han 40 fu 3 han deal in episode 1: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Mahjong_scoring_rules

and finally :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Japanese_Mahjong_yaku
You need yaku to be able to declare victory.

I now believe I can enjoy Saki as intended, as a hardcore mahjong anime.

LoL! It's freaking addictive.

My best so far is a tsumo Haneman (7 fan). That was GG. 12000 ten from each player and you only start with 25000 ten.

Thanks for the best flash game ever, at least something to do at school. :D

Now i need to learn the japanese style.

I play Japanese mahjong quite a lot, both online on Tenhou and with friends. I managed a pretty awesome dealer 9-han (baiman) hand once, but I wouldn't say I'm particulary good. 8kyu rank on Tenhou. :p

Mahjong anime are so much more awesome if you actually play the game.

I managed to get a non-dealer (iirc, it was more than a year ago) yakuman once (with kokushi muso hand). I usually go for some high scoring hands, so I either win big or lose big. :)

I'm kinda reluctant to play on Tenhou though...even with multiple guides available in English, I'm still afraid to screw up. XD

I grew up playing this game with my family nearly weekly, so I play fairly frequently. Only issue is that the rules are slightly different than the style I play (Hong Kong Style), so it takes just a little while for me to adjust, but most of the aspects are about the same. (If there's a duplicate of this message, it's because the dormitory internet is a bleeding pile of dung).

Tsumo, Baiman. 4000-8000 ten each.

My Grandma is a tileshark hardcore hustler (among old ladies :P) and she is my mahjong sensei. I'm pretty good if I must say so myself. Japanese mahjong is essentially the same as Chinese, but the scoring is different. I'll pick it up before the show is over tho.

(Riichi is a pretty fun rule to play with, though I must admit ;))

Yes I do play Mahjong. Taiwanese and Guangdong Mahjong, but not Japanese Mahjong. I can understand mostly on what they're doing in Saki but not the scoring scheme. I have to read the Japanese scorings. It's pretty much the same as Guangdong Mahjong though

i rarely have the chance to play, but i've played both 13 and 17 tiles. hardest part for me is scoring, which i just leave to others, easiest being tile counting and elimination in the end game

granted, i haven't started watching the anime yet, but i feel like for a lot of these types of anime (hikaru no go, shion no ou, etc.), not knowing the game doesn't undermine the character development and the sense of urgency at all. i never played shogi in my life but still enjoyed shion no ou a great deal.

My friends and I know how to play, but not how to score... so we all pay a buck if the winner draws from the wall and two bucks if your discard gives mahjong.... Every once in a while, I pick up a book and try to figure out the scoring rules and give up.

I play net mahjong daily on Tenhou.net and Toupai-ou.com
I never played in real life yet, because I don't like HK rules, and there is no place(yet) to play riichi mahjong in this little country.

I recently was about to buy a set what I saw in a store, but you need 4 people to play and I don't know that many people.

I always thought Mahjong was single-player... then this show came along and blew my mind away. Now Mahjong is a four-player battle with blushing maids and tacos.

I might try it, but it seems too confusing.
