So just wanted to know how everyone else rates their anime

What I do is I give a sense of "value" to each anime. The higher the rating the more "valuable" an anime is. I know this is really a subjective way of doing it but most people who try to rate an anime objectively will most likely just revert to whether they like it or not. The number of 1-ratings for some very good anime shows this fact. Some people are just extremely stupid. Im not saying that my ratings are reliable though, but thats just how I think.

So here we go:

10 - An absolute masterpiece. As an anime fan you just owe yourself to watch this. YOU WILL MISS A LOT IF YOU DONT WATCH THIS.

9 - A great anime that just falls short of being a Mona Lisa. 9 usually happens when the anime lacks a definite strength in one aspect or another. You should probably buy DVDs for 9s and 10s.

8 - This anime is very good and a definite must watch. This will have you watching at the edge of your seat, you just wont resist marathoning this in whole since its so damn good.

7 - A good anime. You should watch this for enjoyment, these are good and entertaining but will not have you drooling over it as much as an 8. For me rating either 7 or 8 is the hardest copz these are still shows I like but they are not diamonds, theyre like semi-precious stone to me.

6 - A fairly interesting anime. This will have some very interesting moments that will make you watch every episode. You probably would have other interests though and this will likely hang on your watch list for a while since you have othr shows to watch.

5 - A fairly average anime good for watching on Saturday mornings when you have nothing to do. You wont miss a lot not watching this. This is the lowest rating I give.

Also as much as I can I dont mix favorites with my ratings though my favorites will most likely have 9 or 10.

So there you have it, commence raging and trolling!

btw I havent watched Mars of Destruction when I made this post, might change everything

I only give 10's to my special animes, but like you said its very subjective. Sometimes I am very generous about what I give, but the ones I give 10 must be constantly good, I get really pissed with animes that are amazing through, but the last episode or two are really crap. (ie death note= Light should of *****) =0

Hmmm just answered this question in another forum yesterday in order to gain access to the gallery =p.

I only go down to 5 too. If it's below five I drop it right away and I will not rate something I haven't finished unless it's something like One Piece that's been around forever and isn't going to end soon. Although, I have watched Mars of Destruction and I think I gave that like a 2. It was so funny though. Didn't really change the way I rated things though.

5 = I'm really bored but it's a good way to pass the time when I have nothing else to do. Usually reserved for any generic harem, romance, ecchi, comedy type genre.

6 = I'm still bored but at least some parts of this anime make me laugh or smile. I wish it would be better but honestly, expect very little from this one.

7 = It's good and I like it but if you are short on time there are better ones. Definitely some noticeable flaws in this one. If you've seen a lot of masterpieces and are looking for something a little bit less intense to change the pace then a 7 would be great. Decent characters, story with some intrigue, and enjoyable to watch.

8 = It's great. Definitely some good parts all around this anime. Few flaws if any but nothing glaringly wrong. Alternatively, there may be nothing wrong with the anime itself, it just doesn't really stand out as much as some of the other anime out there. Enjoyment would probably be around an 8 or a 9, the characters would have to be amiable, and the story would have to keep me interested most of the way.

9 = It's awesome. All of it is awesome, not just a few parts. I thoroughly enjoyed this anime and may have pissed my pants laughing so hard or become so pumped up I started shouting while watching. You really can't get much better than this. Story is excellent, the characters are some of my favorites, and I really can't say there's anything wrong with this anime at all unless I was SUPER nitpicky. The only thing that stops it from being a 10 is that it doesn't add anything to the world of anime. It doesn't really stand on its own as a classic that all other anime should learn from. Still, very, very good and highly recommended as a must watch.

10 = It's EPIC. I loved everything about it. It's one of my favorites but it is also worthy of being called an essential anime. It adds something to the genre or has something incredibly unique that cannot be reproduced by any other anime. It's flawless like a diamond and I'll probably find myself rewatching it because I loved it that much. If you haven't watched these, then you can't call yourself an anime fan.

I guess..:

10) Perfect IMO, makes you want to watch it again and again
9) Very enjoyable, almost 10 but had something missing that isn't really noticeable
8) Great anime, not as enjoyable or perfect as 9&10 but worth watching
7) Good anime, but not worth watching more than once
6) Ok anime, a few flaws and didn't enjoy it greatly, but ok
5) average anime, if you have nothing else and are really bored
4) poor anime, many flaws and didn't enjoy it very much
3) bad anime, usually boring and extremely bad stories
2) very bad anime, usually "What in the world did I just watch?!" anime
1) .... no need for definition
?) I didn't rate movies/sequels/ova/special/etc to an anime ( only the original ) before joining MAL and if I didn't remember it exactly I would leave it blank ( or rate it the same as original )

of course, my ratings aren't perfect, as rating is based off what I rated other anime. And may be altered slightly because of my mood and what I had watched right before.

10 - a masterpiece Anime that I'll never be bored to watch it again and again, and I'm so addicted to watch it everyday
9 - a great Anime but I'm not going to watch it again and again but I'm addicted to watch it
8 - a nice Anime that I enjoy it everytime I watch it, but not addicted
7 - a nice Anime that I enjoy to watch it but there's something wrong/weird with that Anime for me
6 - Anime that I don't enjoy everytime I watch it, and hope I'll finish it ASAP although I feel a little forced..
5 - worst Anime and most boring Anime for me, even if I watch it while sleeping is no problem at all
1 - 4 = I'll never scored an Anime/Manga on these scores, because I still appreciate what Anime is

My ratings are more based on a percent rating, so my average is 7 instead of 5. Nonetheless:

10 - It was spectacular; whether it be the characters, music or the story, it overwhelmed my heart and I could not cease from watching it. I fell in love with one or more characters and will be an experience I will never forget. This is a special place for the anime that I truly love.

9 - Really great anime, although missing a little bit of something that would make it a masterpiece. However, it is a great watch.

8 - I enjoyed the experience, fell in love with a certain part of the story and did moderately wanted to finish the story and felt content when finishing it.

7 - Normal. I didn't hate it, but it nothing made it stand out above the other shows.

6 - There was something wrong with the anime, missing a key element of my likings.

5 - Redundancy, definitely a chore to finish.

4 - No... just no, hated watching.

3 - 1 - No anime should get this low... well I won't be watching anything this low I believe...

I rate high depending on the overall score. I don't use the scale given by MAL

10 - Masterpiece : A very rare rating from me. All aspects are epic. Plot Progression, Character Development, Introductions, Ending, and how interesting it is. The ending is the trigger for a rating of 10. If I'm deeply moved by the ending and all aspects are okay, I'll unhesitantly give 10. For the comedy series, if almost all of the episodes made me laugh, I can give it a 10 (Seto no Hanayome and FMP Fumoffu are in)

9 - Superior : I give this to an anime which only lacks one aspect. For example, all went well and the ending is good but still lacks to be called epic. I also give a 9 even if all of the aspects are not epic but ended beautifully that deeply moved me(eg. Chrno Crusade)

8 - Average : I give this rating if some of the aspect lacks the magnitude. This are the series that started well, progressed well, then ended well(eg. Air, Shakugan no Shana Second, Nagasarete Airantou, Rozen Maiden). This are the anime that I describe as average. I always give 8 if it progressed well then ended badly (eg. NHK)

7 - So-so : This are the series that I often give no reaction or response. This didn't have an excellent progression or character development(eg. Shakugan no Shana S1, Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha S1, Chobits) . For good progressions, the ending really ended for the worse.

6 - Bad : I rarely give this. I often give this to special/OVA (eg. School Days Magical Kokoro-chan). Unlike 7, the story's progression is really bad. The concept is bad. Character development is also bad. (eg. Ragnarok Animation)

5 - Worse : For now, I haven't given a 5 yet. This are the series that I have finished till the end and till the end I'm saying "I should've dropped this anime earlier." This are the series that has escaped from being dropped because I gave the anime a chance to redeem itself.

4 and below - Unimaginably Bad : This are the series that I didn't finish and dropped early on.(eg. Eureka 7) I may give something like this to Completed Series if I really got pissed off.

10 - Superb, pretty much has everything I would like in a show
9 - pretty much the same as 10, while the show has elements of being great, I wouldn't consider it one of my personal favourites
8 - great show, maybe even worth the dvd purchase
7 - decent show, not worth money or anything but still enjoyable
6 - alright show, but sometimes I will struggle to finish it
5 - I'd watch it if it was on tv and nothing interesting was on
4-2 - different levels of suck
1 - hahaha oh wow

Sorry to nit-pick here, but shouldn't the title of this topic be "How do you rate your anime?". Right now the title is very misleading.

As for how I rate mine, here's a brief example, as tis a lot more complicated in reality. Oh, and bear in mind that the majority of anime I've watched is actually getting downgraded at the moment.

10 - extremely few anime or manga truly deserve this (only one of my 10s is based purely on my personal taste).
9 - Again, only a few are deserving of this level. The gap between this score and 10 is quite noticeable though.
8 and 7 - most of the better quality anime will fall into these two. The gap in quality between these two and 9 is, again, quite large and noticeable.
4, 5 and 6 - The majority of anime available today will fall into these categories.
2, 3 - Yes, I do use these. Anime so bad it's in danger of actually being good.
1 - Anime so bad watching it is like having your entrails drawn out through your eye sockets with a white hot hook.

And finally

0 - Anime so bad the creators should be tried for crimes against humanity.

For those of you who think that shows like SHnY, NGE, Death Note, Eureka Seven, or even Kanokon are bad, just wait till you see some real crap. It will change your opinion of what bad actually is.

It's like I always say. If you have the time to start something, you have the time to finish it. You can't fairly judge something until you've watched it all, however there are some shows out there that test even my patience.

Once you decide to watch everything, then it all goes a bit Spinal Tap.

I have rated a few things before. Mainly, they were spur of the moment, but now it is hard for me to put a number on a show. As long as it has entertained me, that is all that matters.
