You dropped Haruhi after one episode?

You must not have gotten the message but the first episode is one long, snarky joke. It bears little to no impact on the series. Likewise, there is nothing in the series even close to what that episode is like from there on. Go back to it and watch the real first episode, then you can decide if you want to stick with it or not.

Also, Gurren Lagann and Eureka Seven. Screw your "no mecha" rule. I hate mecha, and I love those two shows.

TTGL has not enough polish to qualify it as a ... true work of quality. And looking at the OP's list, it's not the kind of show he'd be likely to enjoy anyway.

I'd recommend you watch the Memories Series of films and Planetes, as well as read Yankee-kun to Megane-chan.

While I haven't watched them myself, I have a sneaking suspicion that Detroit Metal City and Millenium Actress might be up your street.

Peace through Superior Firepower!

Are you using some kind of advanced logic I don't know about? Have you decided to assign new meanings to English words? Are you just intentionally burning a straw man and knowing full well that you're changing the subject and misrepresenting a claim?

Definitely these two. DMC is the most hilarious anime I've seen, and Millennium Actress tells an incredible and compelling story.

Third Millenium Actress due to its unique directing, even by today's standard. DMC I would be a bit wary of depends on if you are easily offended and whether you are a metal fan. The whole series is basically making fun of death metal fans among a slew of other things. Personally I thought it's great, but part of that is due to the fact that I don't relate to any of the things they are making fun of.
Also, PlanetES is space.
I finished Haruhi and still didn't find it great.

Looking at most of the stuff you rated 10s (seems to lean towards slice of life/adventure), I change my recommendation to Aria series, Haibane Renmei, Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo, Shigofumi, and Seirei no Moribito.

I strongly dislike Mecha. I just don't watch it, and I've got my own reasons for that. I will look into to those that you have suggested though. I hadn't updated my list at the time, but I watched the first 3 episodes of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya and was still not interested in it. I also believe that the first (and last) episode should be the best in the entire series, as it should draw the viewer in and keep them watching.

I'll look into Millenium Actress and DMC too. For DMC, I'm no fan of metal, but I can tolerate it just fine, so there should be no problem there. I'll also look into Aria, Habane Renmei, Shigofumi, Serei no Moribito and the rest. Thanks for the recommendations!

*looks at thread title*

So that "no exceptions" bit is just for show then? Also, not every show has to look like it came off the KyoAni assembly line. The raw, unpolished look of TTGL actually suits the show very well.

Yeah, my top 2's eliminated.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei - Comedy. Laugh your heart out.

Honey & Clover - Comedy/Romance. University/Post-graduate setting, not high school. That's a big plus.

One Piece - Why? Because mainstream is a must for everyone who watches anime, and One Piece is the best mainstream.

nooooo!

1. Anime is a mainstream genre.
2. Neon Genesis Evangelion is the best mainstream.

I'm back.

Haha don't worry if you don't like metal. Although metal music is the general theme of the show, the comedy is as simple slapstick as you can get, and that's what's most important.

You could always try Armored Trooper Votoms though. If your dislike of mecha is based around all the emotionally unstable/ hot blooded teenagers in ridiculously imba machines that own everything just by screaming out the names of their attacks, you might find Votoms refreshing for it's more realistic take on both pilots and hardware (Chirico might be a little imba now and then too, but there's at least a proper reason for that).
