The story was decent, it's got a good ending, however the animation for the action scenes are bad... a bit better than episode 7 tho.

I hope there will be a third season, and that the animation will be better...

That's a first lol. Most would consider the animation top notch, I could see where you're coming from tho, prob the art issue, but for me the style/animation > drawing. The style is awesome, I guess they could have upped the drawing a bit, but the sloppy style is sweet.

The story was decent, the fight scenes def. stood out in this ep, but everything was good, I liked the end. And that she ended up liking nataru instead of that kid lol.

Oh and the person adult nataru gave birdy to was young nataru right? But than he changed history, seeing as he was the one who dragged her out before.

Just finished watching the second series after completing the first series a few days ago, and that I really enjoyed both series. I felt some more screen time was needed for Tsutomu, especially for the last episode as I thought he was majorly ignored and they could have at least done an after-events with him as well as Birdy.

As for the animation, I didn't hate it but didn't like it when it came to the battles.

I would like to see a third series or follow up from this.

i loved this season, i wouldnt say more then the first. but close. what i didnt like was that Birdy and Tsutomu didnt end up in love.....i was really hoping for that. well if they make a 3rd season theres a good change out it now that everyone is out of the say kinda.

i really hope they make another, cuz like what about Birdy and Tsutomu getting sepurated? they said i think it was at the beginig if this season that his body was beond repair or something like that, so are they never getting sepurated? or is it that there making him a whole new body and its taking them alot longer this time?

there too many things left open for there to never be anymore.

The second season was 99% perfect, in my opinion. It had everything I look for in a show, and there wasn't one moment in the 12 episodes that I wasn't sitting on the edge of my seat. It had my attention all the way through.

I'd rate it a 10/10. My only complaint would be that a few times during fight scenes the quality of the drawing would look really ugly. I ignored it because there was still so much energy in the fights that it made up for it.

I would love to see a third season, as there are a lot of un-answered questions. Season 2 finished back in March 2009, then awhile later Funimation bought out the show, and started subbing the Episodes and releasing them. The final episode was released by Funimation at the end of June 2010, so at this point in time it's possible they are starting on Season 3. I really hope so, I love this show.

Well, seeing as they still haven't explained Mr. Secret Agent Man and his employer, here's betting on a season 3.
Yeah, they totally -need- a third season, because they haven't even really touched on the main villain yet, Christella Revi. She, was in like, what... 2 minutes of one episode in the first season? It's been a couple years so I can't quite remember. I mean, yeah, her name has been mentioned in quite a few episodes, but actual scenes with -her- (or in that case, her silhouette) only occurred once, I think. As for Gomez, her supposed underling, I'm still not sure if he's truly a villain.

JadeMatrix said:
Actually, they could keep making seasons and I'd still watch it.
I hear you on that. This is one of my favorite series.

JadeMatrix said:
Most likely Nataru will return, as a minor character, just like Sayaka did.
Whether he does or doesn't return, I'd still watch it. The whole Birdy/Tsutomu dynamic and body sharing thing is what attracted me to the show in the first place. From a philosophical and metaphysical angle, I think it's a good concept to explore. I'd like to see some more shows that involve body sharing. It's like "walk a mile in another person's shoes" taken to a literal level. The whole, first person perspective, shows what it's like to live, even temporarily, as someone else. It's an interesting way of approaching empathy, anyway (in my opinion).

so, where's tsutomu in the middle of that?

At the end Tsutomu and Nakasugi didn't meet, which makes me a little sad. Well the episode is okay. I can't rate this series a 9 because I think its the same as first season. Nothing special. So its 8/10. Also theres not a lot of Tsutomu in this season.

I really wouldn't mind a third season even though quality seemed to really dip during the fight scenes. as long as they keep the solid story going as well that is. Kinda bums me out that there's no definitive end.

The whole time travel thing really surprised me. I really like anime that incorporate time travel.

WTF! There's no Sayaka x Tsutomu! I thought he and Birdy were two main characters, but poor boy was totally forgotten in the end of second season. I don't care about Nataru at all.

Wow, that end surprised me. I didn't think Nataru that went back in time and saved Birdy. It.. it can't end like this!

Tsutomu didn't get his body back and he never noticed Sayaka
Gomez is still out there doing god knows what!

Now, the OVA which takes place before this season (which is supposed to be watched after this episode) has a bye bye at the end and a "to be continued". Is it for a third season, or is it for this one considering this season comes after it in the timeline? I'm guessing it's for season 2 since it's been 2 years and not even a snippet of news regarding a third season. Oh well..

Well there is something you are missing guys , this will have a 3 Season probably because it says in the OVA : The Chipher " To be continued " right ? So if you want to make sure you just need to check the date of the Season 2 and the OVA , well Season 2 ended at 27 Mar , and the OVA was deployed on Jul 22 both from the year 2009 so we can hope for a Season 3 , because the OVA is just an episode to unite both seasons but it just came out after the Season 2 ended.

Season 3 here we go!

How annoying that Nataru confronts Birdy with the fact that she's always been treated like a dog by the Federation now. The entire first series was boring and forgettable, this one was half padding, and they bring up something interesting NOW, in the last episode?

But "The Cipher" is SET before the second series, which would make that "To be continued" most likely refer to that. You mention yourself that the second series was from 2009, two years ago. It's not very likely they'll make another one after all that time.

Little annoyed not all the plot threads were solved...not to mention Tsutomu is just about forgotten in the last 2-3 minutes. Did he die from mental fusion or something? Did he get his body back? Whats the deal with Christella and Gomez anyway? Why was earth used as a testing ground of the ryunka? Isn't Valic still on the loose? What happened to Nataru? EXPLAIN BIRDY! EXPLAIN!

The ending kinda puttered out though. Senkawa pops up out of Birdy's body and almost talks to Nataru, and suddenly Nataru decides he's not a psycho anymore?

The "blob animation" issue aside, this was my main problem with Birdy's end-game. Nataru suddenly going all "It feels good to kill... so good, in fact, that I'm gonna kill my woman! MUHAHAHA!!!!" went against his character. It didn't come across as if it was well-planned in advance, and the way Nataru regained his sanity by talking to a kid he barely knew - after Birdy's begging fell on deaf ears - was another '...What?' moment. The whole Birdy vs. Nataru fight just wasn't very good, and some lip-sucking action didn't make up for it.

Also, what was with The Butterfly Effect / The Terminator moment? Wouldn't Nataru's adult self have had to exist in the past to begin with in order to save himself - as well as Birdy - from death in the explosion?... DOES NOT COMPUTE!

Until all the cards had been placed on the table, the series was great. The bullet-in-gut time reversal bit is one of the best anime moments my eyes have seen, and tales of brutal vengeance ALWAYS have an edge of intensity that makes up for their simplicity. And I was very appreciative of the fact that Birdy's backstory was tied into it all, alongside some good old fashioned childhood love cuteness. But, then, it simply ran out of momentum and the characters' actions started to become hard to accept. I mean, why did the female villain kill her commander, after it was shown that he'd saved her in the past? That didn't make a whole lot of sense; especially when Gomez didn't keep his word.

And as for the animation, the staff picked movement over consistent art - hence lots of 'off' / ugly faces when the focus shifted to action. I wasn't really fond of it but I was still able to get into the action, and it beat the shounen speed-lines treatment!

It's a shame both S1 and S2 sold poorly - S2 only coming to be because the budget for both seasons had been set when S1 was made. There's no real chance of S3, and that means we'll never get to know what the deal is with Gomez and Revi. It makes the events of S1 appear even more pointless. The only positive is that the Birdy II manga is currently being translated at a reasonable pace... but, since S2 credited the new, 2008 sequel manga, I'm guessing S1 butchered / altered the source material to the point that the two aren't recognisable when placed alongside each other...

http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=5057

...Oh well - at least S2 didn't come across anywhere near as fillerish as S1 and didn't end with plot reset / memory loss rubbish. It's rare for a sequel to better a prequel but Birdy S2 most certainly did.

Lol Tsutomu wasn't really a main character... he's totally a supporting character. Nataru and Birdy are the main focus of the entire 2nd series. And yes the first series he did play a bit more... but totally supporting... in the 2nd series.

He existed in the future so he was able to help Birdy by telling himself in the past to take care of her. He survived the explosion and then his future self saved Birdy from getting killed. At least that's what it seemed like. Oh well, the whole first series was unnecessary to an extent... Tsutomu was should just be a supporting character.

Holy fuck! That fight! Wow. Okay, I admit the animation presented was a bit lackluster but the action is there. It reminded me of Naruto vs. Pain (oh God, the horrors). Overall, a satisfying series although the ending was a bit meh for me. That speech by Tsutomu was epic though. Overall, a 7/10 for me again.

A sad but good end! I really liked this last episode, like the last episode from the first season they sure know how to end with a bang! Great fighting scenes and well I was even right about the person who carried Birdy when she was young! So all mysterious are properly revealed in the end making up for a good ending!

I do like to see a third season of this series, the story still doesn't seem to be over for me! Well up to the original 4 ova's and lets see what they have to offer!

There are still so many questions unresolved.

What happened to Nataru after he time traveled? Are there anymore existing powerful Ixcorians? What happened to Moss and Volic? Who is Revi and Gomez and what are there true motives?

kinda wanted Nakasugi and Senkawa to talk at the end though, after all that he misses her again...

even after finding the photo album, she still went all the way to see him. those two kinda needed a hug at the end.

but when does that ever happen in anime (unless it's 8 years and 3 seasons)

good thing they're teenagers and can go to college or that together... it would have been creepy if they got together with senkawa still in birdy's body.

Watching this series at this point sucks because there is so much left unresolved and unexplained by the end. And, at this point, it's clear that S3 is little more than a pipe dream, which makes the unsatisfying ending and the "next episode" preview that much worse. I almost feel like I wasted my time watching the show.

Anyway, as for the episode, like others have said I definitely felt it was kinda rushed and Nataru's heel-face turn wasn't very believable in how they handled it. Fight scenes were above average for sure, but nothing particularly noteworthy. Kinda peeved the little girl got killed but the last two antagonists pulled a Karmic Houdini, but w/e.

Good show for the most part, but the ending really makes it hard for me to recommend this to anyone in good faith.

While I find this season to be more enjoyable than the first, the ending was a little less satisfying this time around.

What I enjoyed most about this season though was the animation. Sure the art during most of the fights is substandard, but the shear (or is it sheer?) kinetic energy that just pours out of those scenes is enough to make up for it. Some truly gorgeous moments; always made my hair stand on end (not in the traditional sense of the idiom mind you).

Kept me engaged throughout the whole season, which is something I can't say for the first.

Also gave me two of my favorite fight scenes in episodes 7 and 12. They really capture the speed and intensity behind every single movement, as well as being very emotional.

Dream sequence was cool, time jump scenes were cool, flashback arc was cool, it was all cool. Everything was cool. Except for episode 8.

7.5/10 for now, maybe an 8 if I mull on it some more?

Not really, at least to me, because Tsutomu had Nakasugi as a girlfriend in season 1. He was still reeling from that so he never really thought about Birdy in that way in Season 2.

If we got a season 3 maybe that could have been explored.

Better than the first one in terms of not having to deal with all that highschool bullshit drama into memory loss, but still pretty underwhelming.
Nataru got a Tetsuo syndrome, the whole point of his battle against Birdy as stupid as the Batman vs Superman one.
Open ends with the whole Gomez stuff, not to comment on that ridiculous time/space travel at the end.

Was wondering throughout if the ending was going to make up for the rather meh-ish vengeance plot with very little things to care about (maybe some liked the loli fanservice?), but it turns out that it's not the case at all.

I do agree with some earlier comment on the fact the bullet-in-gut time reversal scene was one of the most surprising ones of the show, but considering the whole end they give to his character and the point of his powers, it seems to me quite in vain.

Despite the art during the fight scene being mediocre it made the whole fight feel really fluid, super intense aswell.
Also kinda weird how Nataru switched from psycho to nice guy as Tsutomu popped up.

I'm guessing that Nataru "jumping" back in time creates a different timeline where he's able to make it so he can tell his younger self to protect Birdy, which keeps repeating over and over.

I actually really enjoyed the second season, the whole Ryunka thing didn't quite do it for me in the first season unfortunately but this season grabbed my attention for sure.

This shit is so bad. At least the first season didn't take itself so seriously. Overall, Birdy's idol persona was the only good idea to come out of this 'reboot.' And I guess they handled the tragedy well, with the reflection and the festival and such. Too bad our MC was pretty much the cause of it.

Now, for this second half, they just went down the list of what an action sci-fi show needs and filled in the blanks with Birdy because her name's in the title. I didn't care about what was going on and was just waiting to see Nataru get killed, but it never happened.

Time travel loop was interesting twist.

Artwork for the fights was super terrible for the last few episodes

Plot lines involving the head honcho terroist chick (Christy?) and the Ixorian experiments which Chief Magus sounded super suspicious about at the end and the brewing war between the Federation and Union are left dangling and unfortunately seemed to have a lot of potential

IF they ever make a 3rd season dump Tsutumou and focus on Birdy dealing with these angles.

I thought I had found a hidden gem, based on the reviews. But it was mediocre. Story was very old-school. If the art was also old-school, I could have liked it. I like Birdy's design in the manga.
