You know, at this point so many chapters in with so much shit that happened, all I want is that Griffith son of a bitch to die in the most satisfying way Miura can make it. I know we are all just waiting for that one chapter when it happens.

nah, he is at least an intriguing character. Something I haven't been able to say about Guts for awhile now.

This. Anyone who felt like the plot didn't progress at all lately?. No character development, just constant adding of new characters. ._.

Still, the Golden age arc will still remain in my heart as one of the best that I have read.

Well, when Griffith finished off the Kushan Emperor and made his weird kingdom...I'd call that progress. That's why I like seeing Griffith more. Whenever he's involved I feel like stuff is actually happening. With Guts' party it's basically just:
- wanna go somewhere
- get attacked by monsters
- Guts kills them and is beaten up in the process

Kinda lame if you ask me.

Lest we forget the loli witch clinging onto Guts' armor so as to 'bring him back' when he goes too insane. This is repeated far too much, making the armor - a potential upgrade for Guts - kind of pathetic. I'm not saying it doesn't make him strong but, honestly, an armor that brings you to the brink of death and insanity for slaying demons that aren't nearly as strong as Griffith and his four mini bosses hinders more than it ought to.

Precisely.

This wasn't recent; happened around ch 280~? Which is approximately 3-4 years in the past. And apart from that, progress for Guts has been nil.

We have Guts with his children army fighting magical creatures in the far away land of Narnia, while Griffith proceeds to enchant a princess and expand an empire with thousands of beasts which have, admittedly, pretty cool tricks: a tall lancer, a blind archer with unprecedented accuracy, an armored dragon, and an immortal swordsman with wings.

If Guts doesn't get an upgrade soon, it won't be hard to decipher that the author has lost interest in what made Berserk, Berserk.

Me No Gusta.

Oh yeah? I didn't even notice. Well, that's the benefit from picking a manga up only recently and then being able to marathon it.

Edit: just checked it and it was actually only 18 chapters ago. That "only" 2 years and about 4 months.

Guts makes it worth reading though the recent chapters have been disappointing.

I loved it the first time I read it, I still love it even with the slow update-pace. I see no problem with the current story but maybe it's just me who would probably watch Guts do anything.

No that I don't want to know what's up with Griffith more now that he has his kingdom.

I power read up to chapter 307 in about 3 days like 2 months ago, and I enjoyed every second of it, easily becoming the best quality manga I have ever read. I personnally didnt see any drop in the quality, only changing of the styles with the new companions. Additionally I think the changes are definetly for the better and keeps the fights and plot more intresting. I also think the new companions are nearly as cool as guts himself espeacially Serpico.
I decided tho to stop at this chapter and just wait for another volume, i can be patient :), i rather wait a month or 2 and read 200 pages than read like just 20pages

Well good luck with that after you caught up with the most recent chapter.

Does anyone Know if Miura even has an idea of where he wants to end Berserk? Or does he just plan to continue as long as he can make a living of it?

Just going to throw my 2 cents in - I just "marathoned" Berserk in the last few days on a friend's recommendation, and I've gotta say this is a remarkably overrated manga. It started out extremely well, through the Golden Age arc, but then...Well, I think the author realized that he had a steady pay check, and didn't want to let it go.

He's kind of falling into the Dragonball premise that's waaay too common in manga - "Oh my god! it's so powerful no one can overcome it." Gatts power level goes over 9000 and defeats enemy. Rinse. Repeat.

If it was a weekly or biweekly release I could justify keeping up, but this is just too much. If he had that big of a story to tell, he should have written a book.

Darn... I only realized this would be a never ending shtick at around chapter 220-ish and by then it was already too late and I couldn't stop reading anymore.

I got to admit the story does cling on some places and some repetition is due specially recently and any second focusing on anything not related to SLAY THAT GRIFITH SUNOFABITCH is starting to bore me a bit but still... some moments are just too awesome and carry everything nicely.

The art is still gorgeous but yeah, most of the momento Miura built with the EPIC stuff that happened kinda got lost after 10 chapters. I marathoned through the whole thing in a month and loved every single second, but now that I joined the crew of people waiting for months for a meager 20 pages I can definitely see myself dropping it out of pure boredom... I mean, nothing wrong with waiting for a long time for something EPIC, but the same wait for a rehash with very little development will tire me pretty quick :(

Yeah, I kinda feel you on that one. This past week I "marathoned" through chapters 1-327. What spurred me to read it was the old animated series and the recent tie-in with Capcom's new IP, Dragon's Dogma.

This manga started in 1990, right? I was expecting Guts to have least killed one of the God Hands by now....almost 22 years in the making and not a scratch on one of 'em.

Don't get me wrong, I like the premise of this manga and the characters, but Miura seems to be dragging his feet. He needs to hurry up and get Casca to Elfenheim and have Guts at least take down Zodd or something...

The only reason the current state of it depresses me is because I remember how good it used to be.
The Golden Age, and even some of the Retribution Arc, remain some of my favorite examples of manga. Deep characters and a dark well thought out story with one of the most tragic plot turns I've ever seen in a series.

But nowadays I look at them taking two years to magic a filler monster to death, followed by Puck making another poorly drawn Star Wars joke.
Lord I hate Puck...

I don't really see as Berserk losing its touch. It's just that with a witch who can ward off the demons who want Guts it reduces the craziness by A LOT. I remember when I was first reading it and we see Guts in his first night and shit just kept getting crazy. Now with the witch it gives Guts more time to just relax.

It really pissses me off how long I have to wait for a new chapter though. Ever since they made their comeback with a new chapter a few months ago I was like "YEAHHH" then a few months later here we are today.

As for the Q about for those of us marathoning the manga was their a degenerating quality?

No, it kept my attention the whole way through. I only lost interest in it when I caught up and realized now I have to wait like half a year for one damn 20 page chapter.

It's easy to compliment someone that you'll never envy, but even easier to try and tear down someone who's better than you.
