Honestly, probably the last Miyazaki movie I would think of inducting.

Admittedly, I can't say it is a flat-out failure or anything like that because it isn't, in fact it is not a failure at all. It is aimed at a very young audience (toddlers, I think), and it certainly does more than enough to entertain its target audience. It's bright, colorful, and wildly imaginative; the animation is beyond gorgeous. At its core, Ponyo is Miyazaki through and through, but simplified for its young audience. However, I could never get into it, it is too simple and too all over the place. Unlike most of Miyazaki's work, Ponyo is pretty alienating for older audiences. It is too wild and whimsical with not enough substance to hold it all together. It is the least controlled of his movies, and while I get it wasn't suppose to be, it is still a bit too much of a mess to really be considered for this club.

I nominated this for the longest time. Now that it's finally up, it does not seem real.

I believe that a recommendation list should have a bit of everything. A bit of every gender and something for every demographic. And this is the most appropriate movie for its demographic: small children. While watching Ponyo, I felt like I was 4 years old again, without any worries in my life. It was refreshing and adorable.

The story is a simple take on The Little Mermaid tale, with a fantasy twist - typical of Ghibli. Everything is colourful and very simple, a tale of friendship between a fish and a little boy, with the always necessary moral conclusion about ambientalism.

This is not the best Ghibli, but it's the best movie aimed to small children. When looking for something to recommend to my little sister, who was 6 at the time, I felt like things as Princess Tutu were too complex and had a dark side, while Ponyo is a feel-good movie that just can't go wrong.

The movie is as well crafted as most everything from the author and does not distinguish itself from its peers if we look at it as adults. If we look at it as children, it's cleary superior.
