Not my favourite (in my top 3, though), but if I had to pick the best anime objectively, Cowboy Bebop would be it.
PS: people who didn't like it or find it overhyped, or feel it had success just because it came out in 1998, are wrong, because they simply don't like episodic series. That's fine, but be objective.
Also, many people complain about the main story. Yes, it's very simple, but still beautiful and touching in its own simpleness, Most of bigger and more complicated plots just fall in front of this, because they fail in sending shivers down the watcher. And still, let's not forget that it is episodic, so every episode is a story itself.

I could go on ages talking about how every single aspect of this anime is perfect, but many and better watcher already did (and english is not my language :P)

Heh, I had to register when I happened to stumble across this board and see people say that Cowboy Bebop has no plot, I would have to disagree. Its plot is pretty simple and yet complicated and shows that life doesnt go in a straight line like what you guys want it to, such as the "Main Plot" comment someone felt the needed to add in. How often do your lives go straight and follow a 'main plot'.....they dont, random happen etc etc. I think Bebop portrayed that fine and always had something random happening that wasnt the "main plot" it was a good one.

Dont bother to reply to me for the fact that I will most likely never see this board again.
Sorry~

Maybe not the best ever, but definitely one of the greats.
For something that is ‘old’ to still be as popular and well known as it is today; you have to give it some credit for that.

Not the best, but one of the best.

I like that there aren't that many main-characters, but the interaction is still interesting at the end of the season. Love the jokes.

Not best, but most likely the most universally enjoyed. The concept of "best", is and always will be a subjective matter.

Yes, it's the best. By far. Without question. Without HESITATION. NOTHING even comes CLOSE to this anime's combination and perfection of all genres smacked into one pile of bittersweetness.

I think that objectively speaking, it is the best I've ever seen (maybe tied with LoGH). I've not seen all the animes in this world, so it's hard for me to state it's the best ever. And the last episode is the best thing I've ever seen on a screen, talk about anime, cinema, etc.

BTW, whoever stated it doesn't have a story, was probably sleeping while watching this. Because it didn't miss ONE story, but quite a lot of them, tbh.

This Anime is WAY too overhyped. It's great, except for the actual storyline and 'hook' part of the series. You're just watching and waiting for a MAIN plot to happen, but it only shows it's head once every 8 episodes at best.

The following is a full comprehensive review I did of the TV Series:

Feel free to flame me if you disagree. :-/

agree with a lot of your points.

the whole ending love triangle main plot, has been done. and is overated concur, his verison of it wasn't particular great as some fans make it out to be.a lot of the main plots in episodes have been done. but his emothional momments like the 1 in the first eposide where the "blessed" mexican girl and her bf die and she is looking at spike brilliant moment. and those type of moments threwout the serious done with music and how they slow down the art was awsome.

I'm struggling to watch other series because Cowboy Bebop hits them out of the park.

It's all a personal opinion, theoretically, the show is still very successful for being produced in 1998 (I believe?). It could be argued that it had an original plot with life-like yet eccentric characters but, at the same time all the more lovable for being all too human. I don’t think the animation was breath-taking, and the music was above a seven below an eight for me. It had a memorable ending, and a remarkable impact with it’s on and off again run on Adult Swim.

Music below an 8? This was the best, most powerfully used soundtrack I've heard outside of a Studio Ghibli movie, and it rivals those of Joe Hisaishi himself. Even those who try to detract from this show can't deny the music is stellar.

OT: Cowboy Bebop is up there. Up there in the top 10 it becomes pretty hard for me to pick a clear winner, both because they're all so good and they're very different (I have Ouran High School Host Club, Eureka 7, Bokura Ga Ita, and Bakemonogatari up there with Cowboy Bebop, for example).

Well, I finally got around to finishing Cowboy Bebop. Had trouble getting past the 2nd episode but it was good after that

However, watching this, and enjoying it, it really left me wondering, "how the hell is this considered one of the best animes of all time?"

It was good, I gave it a 7, but I just couldn't bring myself to rate it higher. Yes, all of these ratings are subjective and opionated, but there was so much that made it undeserving of those 10's. Admittedly, I rated some things as 10's in my list which is really arguable, but I guess right now the focus is on this anime.

Cowboy Bebop's central theme, characters, overall story line, and episodic stories were all massive cliches. They've been done in movies, tv shows, animes, comic books, and videogames thousands upon thousands of times before

SPOILERS

Spike being a top ex memeber in the syndicate. An ex cop gone vigilnate, a girl who lost her memories. All been done before. Don't get me wrong, they were great characters who were likable. Not by any means original

Taking random storylines...like, boy helping his blind sister through illegal means. Lots of episodes had these types of known and familiar cliches

Spike holding unto his past with Julia, been done

The villian, Vicious, ex Commrade gone evil. Been done.

Cowboy Bebop certainly executed these cliches really well, don't get me wrong. But it was so incredibly far from original that I don't see how it's deserving of a 10 rating. Or even a 9.

However, good animation for it's time, a great soundtrack, and a good cast helped it

Truth is, most stories in just about anything have been done millions of times already, so it's pretty difficult to come up with a "unique" storyline, but Bebop still stuck with the really cliche that we've seen. Guess that's why I think this good anime is really undeserving of the title, "masterpiece"

yeah the stories were cliche, then again no anime has a real original story, they are all rehashed of some part even lain is similar to other storys, what matter in anime is always THE EXECUTION of the story, not the story itself

It's for sure my favorite anime show...it's better than these classics too....Grave of the Fireflies, Berserk, and One Piece...

Is there anything quite like this show coming out dubbed for anime? Anything as good as this....with a excellent cast of characters, musiq, animation, story, etc. this show just absorbs you right into it.!!!

Up to personal taste, but IMO right up there with LOGH, Evangelion and the original Macross as some of the best stuff ever made. Let's remember that some of the rankings here at MAL reflect the taste of people over the last 3 or 4 years. Most of this stuff will be easily forgotten. It's the series that stand the test of time that can be called true 'classics'.

It's really disappointing and sad that numerous people can't appreciate that this is one of the best anime series ever, if not the best (I believe it is #1). This show LITERALLY has it all: the plot, the characters, the animation quality (some of the best quality even TO THIS DAY), the music (Yoko Kanno), the director (Watanabe), and much more that I'm not mentioning.

And to everyone mentioning Champloo and Bebop together just because Watanabe directed them both, just please stop. Bebop is on a completely different level.

It's about taste... I would say Bebop lack plot, was bored at some moments. The animation was indeed great for that time, and characters are pretty damn good.
I wouldn't put it in my top 10. But my opinion doesn't matter to anyone just as somebody else's opinion doesn't matter to me :)

There are several episodes with sections that have nothing to do with the all around plot, but it's simply showing the crew's adventures. Every episode DOES have something to do with the plot and ending for at least one character, though, no matter how subtle it is.

Also, remember that Bebop is a series that reflects particular eras in history. In the episodes you may find boring, the show's goal is achieved.

this anime lacks a plot. i have watched till episode 9 and i am feeling so bored.

the first few episodes was ok, the animation was great for a 90s anime, the characters are ok.

i think this anime would be ok if its a 12 episode series. 26 episode is way too long. how am i going to carry on watching an episodic anime for 26 episodes? at the end of the day, what is the overarching objective of this anime? to pursue the bounty of the day for 26 straight episodes? -_-!!!

i started watching this anime with high expectations due to the good praises and good ratings of it, but i am very disappointed.

this anime is highly overrated.

It is a good anime, wait until you finish to say it is overrated.

A thread from 2006 still active for 8 years lol. Anywho, Cowboy Bebop is pretty good but I never thought it was mindblowing, I know the plot/story was but I was bored out of my mind for the first 4 episodes, I remember falling asleep on one of them. After that it got better and I gave it a 9 (I rate out of enjoyment).

Truer words have never been spoken. I agree with you 100%.

I just finished watching it for the first time and I felt like I “made” myself watch it just because people rave about it all the time. Honestly, the show didn’t appeal to me anyway and most of the episodes were kind of boring with a few exceptions. Ed was the best part of the show imo. Haha

This thread was created closer to the time Cowboy Bebop was released than it is today.

Does Cowboy Bebop destroy everything pre-2006? Maybe. It certainly held up as a benchmark, where even popular Youtubers were talking about it five years ago. Post-2006? TTGL and Code Geass came out a year after, even Death Note was still airing at the inception of this post.

I just rewatched episode 3 because I found it was written by the head writer of an anime I'm watching and honestly, maybe it's a mistake to judge on one episode, but certain elements really don't hold up that well today. The art style is very "of the time" and a little off putting to me now and the animation style is very early digital feeling. Also, maybe this is just a symptom of this being an early episode, but it seems like there is a lot of holding onto shots for an overly long time and recycling those same shots over and over, maybe at the time this was seen as artistic but at this point it just seems lazy. I'm not hating on the show though, I did enjoy revisiting the episode, and it's still a good show, but it's maybe not as good as people in the west thought it was a the time.

You have to remember that you are watching this many years after the waves it caused, for many people this was their first taste of "anime for adults" and it also wasn't like any animation in the west at the time, so to many people it seemed revolutionary even if in the grand scheme of things it's just a typical anime for the time.

Also interesting that a thread from when the site seems to literally sitll have been just the founder and his buddies is somehow still active, lol.

TTGL is a joke though compared to Bebop, Geass and Death Note

It was good but nowadays there's a lot better

I really liked its style though, I think in that aspect it has most modern anime beat. Most modern anime wouldn't dare to be episodic either which is a shame.

For almost 26 unique episodes it had almost no flops and I don't think it's a chore to watch like others have said. I do think it's overhyped but it's one of the most important anime history wise so I can't complain. It paved the way.
