Do I have to watch all the Macross before this one to understand the story?

I am asking this because I have watched many AMVs of this series but it is a MUST that I have to watch the past seasons like Marcross and Seven to understand this one.

I don't know if this can help but my brother just watched Frontier ,without watching any prequels and apparently he did understand because he was all for me to watch this and well I'm at episode 5 and I can understand quite a bit. I don't know if in the prequels there is more info about previous wars mentioned but you can situate yourself easily.

No. There's a lot of references and it fits within a universe continuity, but the story is completely standalone.

Having the same problem here , do i have to watch its past series to understand it ?

i actually want to start from this series as because the past series were so old . So i really need suggestions now

Understanding it won't change the fact that it's terrible. I recommended it to my friend just to show him how shit it was. Then he did the same to another friend.
