Is it okay to watch this movie with some friends that haven't seen the anime yet? Would they be able to understand what's happening in the movie without having to explain anything?

You have to watch the series before watching because that takes events out of the Phantom Troupe arc on the show, and you need to watch from the beginning till you finished that arc.

You will need to know what happened at Yorkshin to get most of what happened in this movie.
