Episode 15: Good old training camp episodes. Looking forward to the match. Episode 16: The senpai-tachi are so badass (for the most part :P). Fun episode. Enjoying Furuya's development. Episode 17: HNNNNGGGGH TOO MUCH AMAZINGNESS ^______^ I never knew about balks - I'm sure it's never come up in OoFuri or Major or anything else. Learned something new :3 </I wish the UK broadcast baseball goddamnit> Episode 18: "Shit, I'm so tired but I can't sleep!" <--- My exact state of being since four this morning. Which is why I'm now up and marathoning anime. xD Episode 19: There is a definite catcher/pitcher/balls joke to be made here - oh, Brian already made it xDD Oh, I was wondering who the guy in last episode's art capture was! Mei... such a cute name. >3< I was underwhelmed with Tanba's forkball tbh. Maybe because I don't have much emotional investment in him ^^;; AND NOW I'M CAUGHT UP WITH AT LEAST ONE MORE OF MY WEEKLIES FFS |

Episode 20 I was beginning to wonder how much Tanba was going to effect Furuya and Sawawmura's playing time. The injury has really opened things up for them. Speaking of the injury, it brought up scary memories of Jason Heyward (Atanta Braves) last year. He also got hit in the face while batting and it shattered his jaw. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DeUyu6ZX_Zk Tanba was much more lucky. |

Episode 20 I was half-expecting some kidn of injury because like Yoshi I was worried about the two MCs not getting much play time after it was made clear that Tanba wouldn't back down or be beaten anytime soon. Still an emotional episode and together with the previous one it made me get more attached to Tanba and the Senpais. I also agree with Sandy that the coach is doing a great job! |

Episode 22 Awesome episode! Its great to see game action in the regular season. I've said this many times before, but it is easy to see the writers know quite a bit about baseball. I've played against several submarine/extreme low release point pitchers in my day. We used to always crush them too. Its much more difficult for a submarine pitcher to have quality breaking balls. Which means, their best pitches are almost always fastballs. Also, a right handed submarine pitcher's fastball is going to naturally tail back into a right handed batter. For pull hitters/power hitters, this is a dream scenario. Basically, mistakes in location really allow teams to "tee-off" on them. We used to "froth at the mouth" when we saw a submariner warming up before the game. I was a switch hitter, meaning I batted right or left handed depending on the pitcher. I always batted righty against submariners, even if they were right handed throwers because of their natural tail. Their release point is a little strange, but you only have to see a couple pitches before it is easily picked up on. The entire body motion directs you toward their arm, which releases the ball out in space for everyone to see. That is not a good thing for pitchers. Someone like Sawamura, who has that deceptive motion where its hard to pick the ball up right away, are the hardest pitchers to face, imo. In case some of you guys don't know a lot about baseball, I figured I'd give some "inside info" :P |

Episode 25 Lol at how proud Sawamura was at properly holding the ball with the four seam grip and the Tanba jokes were funny too. Digging how calculating Yeung has been so far and Miyuki came through with a way to loosen up Furuya. I felt like things were just getting started around 20 episodes in, so I'm glad it's not just 2-dour. 50 episodes, maybe? :D |

Episode 23 Thanks guys. I'll definitely try to provide some baseball knowledge/depth to my comments on the series. "4-seam...Is that an American Rapper?" Haha, I cracked up. In his defense, it does sound like the name of a rapper these days :P. So, the game ended in the 5th inning. They must do the same as we did in high school. After 5 innings, there is a 10 run "slaughter rule." This was enforced due to how long baseball games can last if outs aren't being recorded quickly. Since most games were after school, you could easily run out of daylight. Even for schools that have stadium lights, they didn't want us out too late because we usually had school the next day. Almost all games were played during the week days. As for the fastball mechanics, four-seam fastballs are used for better control and placement. They tend to stay in a much straighter line. Since Sawamura is a "pitch to contact" pitcher, he should work on mastering this fastball. He is going to want the other team to hit the ball, but on his terms. Basically, by pitching to locations that makes it tough to do anything besides hit ground balls or pop-ups. 2-seam fastballs, which I'm sure they will cover in an upcoming episode, are harder to control, but have much more movement. They don't stay straight. They tail toward the throwing arm side making them much harder to hit. A right handed pitcher's ball tails to the right, left handers tail left. Strike-out specialists, like Furuya, tend to gravitate toward 2-seamers because they are easier to miss do to the movement. Though, most starting pitchers throw both types. Episode 24 Slaughter rule again. Damn, they are rolling right now! I can definitely agree that one pitcher can help change a team around. Our Ace in high school also pitched batting practice to us quite a bit. He was a great pitcher too, the best I've ever faced. Since he was the best pitcher we ever had to face, if we learned to hit off him, we could hit off anybody. It helped us with our batting a ton. Yueng is going to be tough to hit. The best thing a control pitcher can do is get a batter guessing. If you are guessing at the plate, you are already in deep trouble as batter. Episode 25 Damn, right when it was getting good too. Not much to add to this episode except when a pitcher can keep a forkball/splitter/sinker low in the strike zone, they are damn near impossible to hit. Even if you do make contact, its going to be a ground ball almost every time. Looking forward to seeing Yueng take the mound next episode. Episode 26 Sawamura's coaching from the bullpen was cracking me up, haha! Yueng is good, but a couple batters are hitting the ball pretty solidly off him. Next time through the order should be where they put some pressure on Yueng. A line drive back at the pitcher is a solid shot. It means your timing and contact were perfect, you just hit a little bit on top of the ball. Furuya has settled down, but his pitch count is something to take note of. For professionals, 100 pitches is the imaginary line that most managers don't want their pitchers going too far over. I didn't pitch, so I'm not even sure what the line was for out HS pitchers. I'd imagine it is less though. Interested to see how this plays out. |

Episode 26 Exciting game so far, it seems Seido is slowly figuring out a method to handle Yeung but he probably has more up his sleeve too. And Furuya has probably already pitced a lot, I think he won't make it past the 5th inning. Though Yeung also pitches a lot, though he can probably handle about 200 due to his training routine. |

Episode 29 This is a pretty awesome showdown right now. Sawamura is pitching with high confidence which is much needed as a pitcher. The emphasized the batting order in this one quite a bit when mentioning clean-ups. The clean-ups are referring to the 3rd, 4th, and 5th hitters in the batting order (there are 9 total hitters). Its also called the "heart of the order" and is generally the most dangerous part of any team's batting order. The 1st and 2nd batters are usually fast and have a good batting eye. They tend to bat more strategically and not try to use a lot of power or over-swings. They try to get walked, get singles, or do everything they can just to get on base. Basically, their job is to put the ball in play somewhere to give them a chance to use their speed to get on base. Ideally. That way, the clean-ups can come in using their power to "clean" the bases. 3rd hitter is usually the best all around batter. 4th hitter is the one with the most power. 5th hitter can be either, but is usually a power hitter as well. 6th hitter is usually a good batter too, but just a step below the clean-ups. 7th and 8th hitters are the weaker batters or the struggling batters on the team. The 9th hitter is a strange spot. Some opt to put the weakest hitter here. Others tend to put a fast guy here who is otherwise a candidate for the #1 or #2 spot in the order. There are many different strategies for batting order, but this is the base that pretty much all managers start with then adjust as the season progresses. I've rambled on enough :P. Anyway, enjoyed the episode as usual and look forward to the next! |

Episode 29: Really enjoyable few episodes. I'm just pleased to see Sawamura finally getting some action xD Still a fan of Yeung, especially after we got to hear him speaking some Chinese. </such a boner for languages at all times> Thanks as always for the extra details, Yoshi! I didn't realise 3rd was important - is that still the case in Japanese baseball? Just because I've never seen 3rd batter being mentioned as anything special in any baseball anime; only the fourth. I have another question too, this time rule-based rather than strategy - let's say for example there's two-out and a runner on third. The batter hits a fly, but the runner on third runs for home base. If the runner makes it home before the fly-ball gets caught making it three-out, does the run count or no? |

The batter hits a fly, but the runner on third runs for home base. If the runner makes it home before the fly-ball gets caught making it three-out, does the run count or no? Thanks and no problem. As you can probably tell, I love talking baseball. No, he is out in that case. Any out that doesn't require a tag will not score the runner. The runner is just hoping the outfielder drops the ball in this case. If there is only 1 out in this case, the runner must wait until the ball is caught and then tag/touch third base before coming home. "Tagging Up" is the term used here and it is only required on balls caught in the air. Now, lets say the runner is on second and the batter hits a ground ball out in the outfield. The batter rounds first and is going to second as the runner rounds third and is going home. If the runner scores before the batter is tagged out at second, then the run counts. The inning ends because of the third out, but the run is counted. Yeah, the #3 hitter is an important batter. The #4 hitter, being the guy that usually hits the most homeruns and has the most power, is often more glorified. #3 hitter is like the most solid in all areas, good average, power, speed, etc. They aren't the best at any of the areas, but are the most well rounded. Generally speaking. Japanese baseball follows this formula as well, but they certainly aren't afraid to shake things up from time to time and run some odd orders. I haven't watched any other baseball anime, but I watch quite a bit of Nippon Professional Baseball. Quite a few stars from their league have made it over to the states in the last few years. |

Episode 29 OH YEAH. I love this showdown and I love Yeung, this is definitely my favorite part of the show so far. It's also really good to see Sawamura pitch with confidence and really be in the zone. I know more than half of this has already aired but it seems like it's just getting started now ^^. I was sad to hear that Yeung can only participate this year despite having one more year of school, that seems unfair :( @Sandy: Are you sure what Yeung spoke was chinese? He's from Taiwan, isn't he? And thanks Yoshi for the info! Like Sandy I have mostly seen the 4th (and 5th & 6th after him) being emphasized in baseball anime, not really the third though. It makes sense though considering he always gets to play first inning even if the first two get taken out. Unfortunately baseball isn't a thing in my country either and before I've seen it in anime (what was my first baseball anime anyway? Maybe Oofuri? Cross Game? Idk) I always grouped it together with american football as the two US sports that are boring to watch. I didn't know shit about either of them, but learned the rules through anime and while I still think american football is boring as hell to watch (it stops every 3 seconds, seriously) I'm definitely craving some baseball, just because I never had the opportunity to see a match (football is fairly popular in austria compared to baseball so in that case I know what I'm talking about). Anime (Ippo) also got me into watching real MMA, though I still think boxing alone is pretty lame to watch most of the time. But I love the UFC since I started it to get over finishing Ippo 1,5 years ago xD |

Episode 30 Really good episode. I like how they really play strategically. That squeeze play was really nice. In practice we used to practice the "suicide squeeze." Which is where the runner on third takes off for home plate on the pitch. This means that the batter absolutely must make contact or the catcher is simply going to tag out the runner with ease. Our coaches would throw crazy wild pitches, like Yueng did, and we had to make contact otherwise we had to run a lap. American Football, the greatest sport on Earth, is played like a chess match. A very brutal chess match. It is the most strategic sport I've ever been a part of (physical sports that is). Baseball is pretty strategic too, but not on the same mass level. It is pretty brutal on the body though. I had a game Saturday night, and am just now able to walk without significant pain, haha. I'm on the interior though (the Line), where we are banging every play. Certain positions have it a bit easier. I couldn't imagine someone not liking American Football after learning the rules and how the game is played. It is truly glorious. One problem is, it is too American dominant. Soon though, the NFL is going to expand to Europe. They are trying to get a London based team within the next several years. I think that would be awesome and help spread the greatness that is Football around the world. |

Well, it's not so much that I don't like the game and how it works, but in practice whenever I've seen a football match (be it super bowl or austrian league) they just stare each other down, then the game starts you don't see anything for 2 seconds then there's a whistle and they start rearranging the same thing half a meter to the left/right taking about 2 minutes before we get another 2-4 seconds of scuffling. Rinse and repeat. I'm aware that this is not true all the time, but enough of the time to make the sport a borefest to watch, imo. I think you need some emotional attachment to really enjoy the matches. Not saying that the rules and game mechanics aren't interesting, but I had more fun watching golf on TV than american football xD. |

Episode 30 Yeah, this was another great episode and a good ending to this game. I'm sad to see Yeung go, but maybe we'll see him again. And that sounds like a good coaching method Yoshi ^^. Maybe it's because of your comments linking it to real baseball, but this feels like the most realistic baseball anime I've seen so far (in terms of how the plays turn out). I would have loved to have your comments on Major though, that show highlighted so many different aspects of baseball and it would have been great to know if it all makes sense from the perspective from someone who knows the sport well as a player. |

Unfortunately, I have never saw Major or any other baseball anime. This one popped my cherry :P. I do plan on checking out Major and One Outs at some point though as I am thoroughly enjoying Diamond no Ace. Episode 31 Yeah, I was cracking up at Todoroki and his dad making a scene in the dugout :P. Also, his throw from third base reminded me of one of my games. I played nearly every position at some point during my time, but mostly outfield, 2nd base, catcher, or 1st. I didn't have the most accurate arm, so I rarely played 3rd base. Unlike the outfield, where your cut-off/relay man can move freely to catch the throw, you really have to be accurate on the throws from 3rd to 1st and it is longer than you might think. The first game I ever played 3rd base, I launched a routine grounder over the first baseman's head, over the out of bounds fence, and into the crowd/stands, lol. Just like Todoroki though, I homered the next inning and had a really good batting day. Luckily. However, if I recall correctly, I had another throwing error later that game as well :P. |

Episode 32 & 33 I loved Raichi's training method of imagining fearsome pitchers. I used to do tons of this back n the day. Though, I always kept my pitchers realistic. I kind of wish I could go back and make my pitchers as fearsome as he has done. I really was into that part of the episode. If you can ht the most insane pitches imaginable, you can hit anything. The theory sounds good anyway. Can't wait for the showdown coming up next episode. Tanba doesn't seem ready to me. I wonder if the coach actually plans on using him or not. Should be interesting. |

Episode 31 Yeah, I also really like Todoroki and I'm on the edge of my seat, which is rare for a game without the main team. The appeal of the rival matchup between Manaka and Tanba is there, but I think it will go down more along the lines of Manaka giving his best with his team but losing and Tanba avenging his childhood friend in the quarterfinals, or something like that. It would be a waste to discard Todoroki so soon after introducing him, though it could be just a foreshadowing for future rivals if the series goes on to show all 3 highschool years of the MC. I don't know if that's the case though. |

Btw does anyone know how many qualify for Nationals? is it only the winner or is it the top 4 like in Prince of Tennis? Also the coach of Yakushi talked about switching in some Sanada guy/Kamiya Hiroshi but we never got to see what that was about. I should probably know due to how many bloody baseball anime I've watched but I really don't remember xD;; Probably because rivals teams aren't very strongly memorable/notable in the baseball shows I've seen, unlike Prince of Tennis, so them coming back or not coming back isn't so much of an issue. Episode 33: BANANA! UDON! BANANA! STEAK! BANANA! Yes, I definitely think the soundtrack's been stepped up lately! :D I'm looking forward to this match. I really like Raichi, haha. What a sweetie. Episode 34: If Sawamura ever has children who play baseball/sports/anything with an audience, I feel terribly sorry for them. XD They will be so embarrassed. Episode 34 Sorry, forgot to answer the qualifier question. There are 32 teams in the Spring Tournament and 49 in the Summer Tournament (34 in the first round, 15 get a bye). I'm interested to see what the coach meant about Raichi's next at bat breaking Furuya. Also wondering if the secret weapon in the dugout with their coach is a Pitcher.
