For me, it's Junji Ito's "Uzumaki".

It hit the right spot in right time, leaving me with severe likeness towards his other works, that I generally love to this point with only one exception - Tomie 1&2.

How about You people? ;3

Ito's Uzumaki. Hands down.

The fact that it's a manga that feels like a Lovecraft story all it's own is original enough, but it also shows it's own great style that nothing else has done before. I really got 'sucked into' this story.
GET IT?

lol, movie
Shuichi is my favorite character. I don't really know why, but he is.

I must say... he rings the bell.
Also - movie = wut. It was unfullfilling and badly finished. Though several chapters were very close to the manga original and didn't fall off from Junji's view of reality.

Btw, any info on upcoming Junji's screenplays? Apart from crappy tv-drama adaptations, there was supposively some plan for one of his "horror world of JI" stories, though press was silent about wich one.

I liked MiikeTakashi's version of MPD Psycho even better then the original manga. ;3

As for Berserk - personally, I can't see why it would be anything related at all to horror/thriller/psycho-killers/omg_aliens_with_fangs genere.
It's still fantasy with lots of gore, but not horror-like at all in my opinion. Though please elaborate, since I might have missed the point totally (I have only read 2 volumes of manga and watched-then-dropped terrible anime version). ^^"

It's hard to choose between Higurashi and Jisatsu Circle, but I think it's the last one. JC has a very deep and shocking story, and I really liked the ending.

How did You liked the movie adaptation then? I found it largely missing the point that manga had, beside flashy "artsy" scenes in redroom and great camera work. :)

As for movie adaptations, does anyone know what h-manga's got adopted for movie script? I would love too widen my knowledge about that particular issue.

From what I know:
- Jisatsu Circle -> "Suicide Circle" [2002] (http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/suicidecircle.htm)
- Lovesick Dead -> "Shibito no koiwazurai" [2001] (http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/lovesickdead.htm)
- Uzumaki -> "Uzumaki" [2000] (http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/uzumaki.htm)
- Long Dream -> "Nagai yume" [2000] (http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/longdream.htm)
- Eko Eko Azarak -> "Wizard of Darkness" (aka. "Eko Eko Azaraku") [1995] (http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/eko1.htm)
- Tomie (1->3) -> "Tomie: ??????" (multiple crappy movies circling around same script)
- Rasen -> "Rasen" (aka. The Spiral) [1998] (http://www.mandiapple.com/snowblood/rasen.htm)

Share ploz, if anyone has any info on other titles. :3

Ah, I didn't watch it yet :) I was completly satisfied with the manga, and the fact that the storyline is different didn't wake in me much urge to watch it. But I think I'll do it sometime, because I'm a little interested as well, and I want to create my own option :)

No doubt,"Uzumaki" by Junji Ito.The whole manga was so strange and amazing that at one point I was just staring and thinking "WTF?!THIS IS LIKE WOW...".All of Junji Ito's mangas are great,I liked "Gyo" and "Flesh coloured Horror" very much too.
To be continued...

Uzumaki here too, it's a very creepy one. I thought some parts of the last volume seemed a little forced and not as scary, but otherwise, awesome.

Also, some other Junji Ito short one where the people all heard holes shaped like them in a mountain call out to them and they all went inside the holes and came out twisted, that was creepier than Uzumaki if you ask me. Forgot the name, grr!

Uzumaki is easily my favorite. Just the right mixture of off the wall gonzo ideas, weird Lovecraftian concepts, and stomach turning moments. Great, great stuff.

I love Uzumaki and a couple of the Tomie/Flesh-Colored Horror tales, and the first few volumes of MPD Psycho are among my favorite graphic novels, from any country, in any genre, ever.

That said, I'm surprised Suehiro Maruo isn't coming up more often here - in terms of technical skill alone, he's one of horror manga's best, most distinctive *artists,* and his work is typically disturbing on multiple levels. His characters are often ostracized, if not brutalized, by their families/peers/society as much as they're attacked by individual loonies or ghoulies, and are often deeply psychologically damaged. Sometimes they readily pass along their trauma. Add to this the particularly audacious level of transgression for which Maruo is known, and you've got a body of work that is definitively horrific. I'd probably call Mr. Arashi's Amazing Freak Show his "best," but what Ultra-Gash Inferno lacks in story it makes up for in the (no pun intended) visceral impact of its imagery. You can't... UN-SEE those pictures.

I thought Hideshi Hino would be getting a little more love, too. He's usually kind of funny and cartoonish, but "Laughing Ball" and "Panorama of Hell" are pretty unsettling.

Also want to cast a vote for the first arc of Kazuo Umezu's "Left Hand of God, Right Hand of the Devil" - for its FIRST TEN PANELS alone!

Haven't read much of those yet, but I prefer Doubt and the all popular Uzumaki/Spiral. ^^
The Ring 1 wasn't bad either, though it took me some short time to get used to the art.

1) Bio Meat Nectar
2) Count Cain- Godchild
3) Umineko no naku kori ni
4) Battle Royale
5) Mouryo no Yurikago
6) Berserk
7) Gantz
8)Hellsing

BTW These are in no particular order.
I like my horror to have more than just blood, guts, and all decapitated body parts.
I actually want a good story-the art should be clear so that I can actually discern what is going on- the characters should have a personality or something that make them distinct and the characters personal development is also a triple plus-lastly I found these quite memorable.

If I'd finished reading Higurashi, that's probably what I'd say (since the anime is one of my favourites).
If I could pick just one of Junji Ito's manga, that's probably what I'd say, but they're all too good.
So Ibitsu! It has everything a horror manga should. I loved every second of it!

Thanks for mentioning Ibitsu - to my surprise, I haven't seen that one yet and I've read it through yesterday. It was good - not the exact kind of horror I would normally chouse, but it hit my spot for psycho killer genere. :)

Ah, Ibitsu, that manga scared the shit out of me. I've never felt anything like that while reading before. It's creepy and truly gruesome, I love it.

I actually haven't read many horrormanga but I'll definitely read Junjis Ito's manga as soon as I have time.

Another manga I like is goth. It's weird but still fascinating.

Another unoriginal bitch who loves Uzumaki. I love (almost) all of Ito's stuff but Uzumaki is definitely my favorite although Tomie really screwed with head too. I was pretty underwhelmed by Ibitsu actually. It just felt a little too conventional for me. Creepy artwork though.

Surprised no one's mentioned Battle Royale and Gantz in here. They're a couple of my favs (Litchi Hikari Club is an honorable mention too).

I think Battle Royale is my fav cause it's got Shonen-y moments with martial arts and stuff along with the gratuitous body dismemberment and brains being blown out. It's like the RE4 of horror manga lol
