| 29th July: National LipStick Day It's hard to believe in today's environment of body piercings and tattoos that something as simple as lipstick was once outlawed. But it was! In fact, in Medieval Europe the church outlawed all cosmetics. "In 1770 a law was proposed to the British Parliament that annulled a marriage if the bride had worn cosmetics before her wedding day!" But in ancient Mesopotamian, things were different. There, women often crushed jewels to decorate their lips. Cleopatra even wore lipstick made from crushed carmine beetles. Other, "shinier lipsticks were made with a substance extracted from fish scales." July 29 is "National Lipstick Day." You can celebrate with these interesting lipstick facts: * "Kiss of Death" is a term that was not only coined for the "femme fatale" in fiction, but also because some ancient civilizations unknowingly used poisonous materials for the making of lipstick. * Eighty percent of American women regularly wear lipstick and over 25 percent won't leave the house without it. * Studies have shown that lipstick sales tend to rise during gloomy or rainy days.
