We all know the famous episode 8 of Shin Sekai Yori which caught us completely off guard. But I really had no problem with it (even though I'm straight).

I know that some people, dropped it because they are Christian and are homophobic because of it. I think homophobic people should get over it and just watch the anime. There are no more uncomfortable scenes after that.

I do understand the meaning of it, I just can't put it to words. Someone help?

If it caught you off guard, you weren't paying attention.

And if you dropped the anime/gave it a lower score because of this, you are a shitty person.

This is an old topic, but I agree people should not drop the show because of that one episode. That being said, I really enjoyed it and though it was great 8/10, it's not perfect. It has its flaws just like other anime. I actually found myself going "WTF really, is this really where they are taking this?!" on that episode, partly because the show WAS dragging a bit up to that point. Thankfully it picks the fuck up right after that and keeps going strong till the end(for the most part).

Shinsekai Yori is not supposed to be a comfortable show. It doesn't flatter its audience, it doesn't serve with easy, crowd-pleasing mechanisms. It has artistic integrity. It puts its audience to the test.

Some people fail that test.

I for one am ashamed too say ep 8 turned me away from this potentially good show...went back again after dropping to re watch it this week, and have to say it is one amazing show. Hope the novel is translated so I can read it one day.

There's an incomplete (but ongoing) English fan-translation online btw.

Pretty much, not to mention it was greatly foreshadowed by the false minoshiro anyway (part of the reason why Saki feels really awkward considering how self-aware she is and how she recalls what the false minoshiro said). Also it's not like it was fanservice, as their relationships actually became key to the overall plot.

I agree. Honestly if people were going to stop watching this show then they should have stopped watching it in episode 4 because the false minoshiro basically said that was going to happen.

But besides the yaoi/yuri doesn't even last long. It's in that episode and a bit in the next few episodes but that's really it. I say if people don't like it then just deal with it for like one freaking episode!

Exactly. They can even skip it without missing any of the plot. LOL

The thing I didnt understand about episode 8 is that EVERYONE went yaoi/yuri. If it was many people, then fine. BUT EVERYONE!!!! I know its TV and all, BUT COME ON!!!!!

I watched it all the way. That episode in particular made it really hard for me to take the show seriously, but the rest kept adding to it.

The whole story is silly, even when I use a suspension of disbelief to watch the show. Waste of my time.

No it didn't bother me per se,but that it wanted to add yaoi/yuri fanservice with the excuse of half-true scientific mambo jambo is another case...

If it's useful in developing the character relationships, it's not fanservice. If I remember correctly, both the gay and the lesbian scenes are relevant to what Saki thinks of Shun and Maria respectively.

Lol episode 8 was what motivated me to pick it up again. Really glad I did though, because the rest of the anime was amazing from there.

People shouldn't drop it! I'm currently watching this anime (ep. 15) and it's getting better and better! Plus, all of this only stand, as far as I know, like 2 episodes.

Lol that's the episode I actually stopped watching it, and put it on hold. But it wasn't so much the gayness, although I'm not particularly fond of it, but more because it was getting a little too complicated and random in the plot. I decided to out if off to watch at a different time when I'm in the mood for a complex story. But damn it is really random sometimes. Lol WTF, a talking piñata?!?!? What's up with that. And I would've liked a male MC better as well, can't really relate to a female one. She's always chasing after that one guy.

I hope no one puts spoilers in this thread, because I'm still going to try to watch it.

My problem with the show was that while the overall world was interesting the characters (especially the MC) were just boring as hell and dragged the whole thing down
also the whole plot with the queerrats was just laughable and got ridiculous

I didn't mind the yaoi stuff (if I were against that I would probably have to stop watching many american tv shows these days, as long as the yaoi stuff isn't the main focus its all good) and think its pretty stupid and homophobic if people would drop it because of that

Well, this gay element is actually a convenient plot point to the story (albeit people will only understand it later). So it's not really just fanservice or shameless yaoi/yuri show-off.
But people dropping it because of this is not homophobia. Not wanting to see homoerotic material is not homophobia.

Personally, I had no problems with it since I never cared about the male characters (since they were all bad before the 2nd timeskip) and the yaoi ship actually gave more chances for my yuri ship, which I liked =)

well dont worry this thing is just because of what the false moshiro told, free sexuality to release stress ^

Honestly, the whole sexual thing didn't bother me. It was expected and it makes sense. What drove me crazy is that I felt like the anime portrayed all of society as gay which isn't true. I mean think about when the main characters are walking down the halls of their school. IT seems like every girl is with a girl and every guy is with a guy. MIX IT UP A BIT!

Actually, I kind of liked the fact that the setting of the anime provides such an interesting ideology. It makes me realize that we as humans are a loving species. Just as an fyi, we do in fact crave human contact. This can range from making out to a simple handshake. I guess this episode takes things a little too far.

Overall it didn't bother me. I just wish a mixture of relationships was displayed.
