I am talking about harem anime where 3 or more females show a love interest in the male lead.

Probably City Hunter (started in 1987) followed by Ranma 1/2 (started in 1989, probably the first reverse harem).

Both are worth mentioning as City Hunter mostly follows the 'Girl of the week' style (several girls are recurring, but very rarely do they get more than a scene) while Ranma 1/2 largely uses a consistent harem cast. Special mention to Tecnhi Muyo (1992) for the first (probably) harem ending.

There are probably older ones, but I don't really know much about those. (And yes, I know I used probably a lot)

Manga the Complete Guide calls Urusei Yatsura (1978) the granddaddy of harem (maid) manga.

I would argue that Urusei Yatsura isn't a harem manga as it never really went beyond a love triangle. It is probably the first manga with a lead that WANTS a harem, but never really succeed in doing so. It does follow a lot of the typical 'girl of the week' style harem tropes, but with the crucial difference being that none of the girls actually fall for the lead.

So I guess it depends on how you look at harem. It was probably the first 'revolution' towards harem.

It does raise the question of which of the early series had three or more girls seriously go after the lead. Tenchi Muyo had Ayeka and Ryoko as serious ones, setting up the triangle, while the other girls mostly enjoyed flirting with him but were never really that serious.

City Hunter used a 'girl of the week' style but for the first 2/3 of the series, all of the girls seriously fall for him. Several of these girls were recurring, although they were mostly cameo appearance.

If that doesn't work, probably Ranma 1/2, where there are three girls constantly battling for Ranma (and interestingly enough, 3 males also constantly battle for the female lead...).

Both of these did precede Tenchi Muyo.

By the way, I should mention that in Urusei Yatsura, the 'girl of the week' did not even flirt with the lead (at least, not without any malicious intent). They all had someone else they were interested in, hence why I didn't call it a harem. Even the love triangle pretty much disappear 1/10 of the way into the series.
