According to IT Media, Toyosato Elementary School, the school that was used as the model for Sakuragaoka High School in the anime "K-On!", has entered into the "Registered Tangible Cultural Properties" heritage list compiled by the Cultural Ministry of Japan. The school building was built in 1937 according to the design of William Merrell Vories, an American architect. The school's future was uncertain when K-On was aired as it was marked for dismantlement by the town of Toyosato after the elementary school moved to a new campus in 2004 and the supporters of the town's decision and the opposition had engaged in dispute ever since. After the success of the anime and the arrival of large number of fans at the school, the preservationists succeeded in halting the dismantlement plan. The school was listed in the report submitted last September for consideration to enter the heritage list.

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Not that I would enjoy K-On! if I ever get to watching it, but kudos that anime can actually have an impact on protecting historical heritage sites.

Symbv, don't want to be rude but you wrote the town's name wrong twice: Toy(o)sato and Toyasato.

Well, typo is typo. No excuse about that. Thanks for pointing out and I have made the correction.

You're welcome ^^
As for the topic at hand: didn't watch K-ON and won't because it's not my cup of tea, but it's great that it has such a positive influence on culture.

BTW, the English edition of the national newspaper Asahi Shimbun once carried the news about the school being considered as heritage back in 2012 Oct.

Real-life high school in 'K-On!' anime to be designated cultural asset

How to go to Toyosato Elementary School (I know because I actually went there before -- highly recommended is what I could only say):

1. Go to Kyoto
2. Either take the local train on Biwakou Line and get off at Hikone station, OR take shinkansen (bullet train) and go to Yonehara, change to local train on Biwakou Line (Kyoto direction) and get off at Hikone station.
3. Change to Ohmi Line (JR Pass cannot be used here because it is run by a private company) and get off at Toyosato station.
4. Follow the map below to go to the school. It is a 15-20 min walk from the station.

Look at that. Something good came out of this series. It's still sad you need a cartoon show to save a historic building from being demolished...

Am I the only fan of this series who thinks that third season is completely unnecessary?

Anyway, kudos to KyoAni for doing such a fine adaptation. This wouldn't even be possible without them.

The anime inadvertantly Love Lived the school out of dismantlement eh. I never thought I'd see the day Kyoani actually did something with the potential for a positive lasting cultural impact even if it was a totally unintentional side effect, but here we are.

"Fans" and an elementary school. Lawl. All the mistaken assumptions that are possible in that sentence.

Still, this is pretty cool. Reminds me of the Girls Und Panzer news a while back.

Haven't watched either of these shows though.
