Should you read the novel or watch a more accurate adaptation before watching "Gakutsuou"?

Not really sure whether or not I should. Does it stand alone fairly well without having previous knowledge of The Count of Monte Cristo?

I read the novel before I watched the movie and the anime. I really loved the book, I don't think you can really compare the two. The book spends a lot of time fleshing out the side plots and characters which are lost in the adaptations. However, I feel that the anime stands really well on its own and does a good job conveying the story. Compared to the most recent movie, Gankutsuou is a more accurate adaptation.

You won't miss anything real huge watching the anime and if you like it, you can pick up the book afterwards.

tl;dr
Anime stands well on its own, it may not be completely the same but it captures the essence of the story fairly well.

I think experiencing either one first will heighten the enjoyment of the other.
