1, The OVA bundled with manga books (i.e. OAD) were excluded because the sales estimation algorithm for manga is different from that for DVD.
2. If there are Limited Edition and Normal Edition of the DVD in the ranking, the volume with larger sales was selected.
3, If the first volume was released in 2007, the anime was excluded even if the following newer volumes were released in 2008.

Additional Info:
The break -even-point for most of anime DVDs is about 5,000 copies per volume. If the first week sales doesn't reach 3,000 - 3,500 copies, the anime companies fail to make profit from the anime. In other words, if the first week sales are below 2,500 copies, they will have a debt.

Boo, Itazura na Kiss only at #109. On a lighter note, good to see CG R2 on the Top 10.

Poor BONES, even Sword of the Stranger didn't do well. I thought that would have done good.

What about sponsors? Are sponsors paying for the anime or just loaning the money? I'm specifically thinking about Zettai Karen Children which is sponsored by McDonald's, I believe.

There are two kinds of TV ads (CM). One is sponsors' and the other is what is called "Spot CM". It's an airing block for CM purchased by a company directly from the TV company. There is no financial relationship between the "Spot CM" company and the anime programs. So McDonald has nothing to do with ZetsuKare.

Most of the TV ads you see in the anime programs belong to the production committee companies of the anime itself (eg. Kadokawa's anime has CM of Kadokawa's magazines.). The rest of the ads are unrelated "Spot CM".

So what does the "This anime is sponsered by the following companies..." which usually follows the OP mean? Nothing? Seems kind of odd to have something like that if they're not paying for anything.

I thought McDonald's in Japan was maybe doing a ZKC tie-in, like having ZKC toys in their happy meals or something like that.

oops, sorry. I googled to find McDonard's is one of the committee companies of Zettai Karen Children along with Geneon, Konami, Shougaku-kan. It's quite rare a food company participates in anime production. Zettai Karen Children anime is targeting at kids, so there maybe a tie-up as you think.

A "production committee" of an anime is a group of companies which invested money for the production of the anime. The system disperses the risk of the failure of the anime. The debt will be dispersed but the profit will also be divided among the companies. It's a "low risk, low return" business.
