THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This was rather an interesting OVA all about Otaku's, informative interviews and some nice small story! The ending was quite nice but damn his gf sure is a bitch... cheating on him just because he started to like anime and manga!

Good episode lets see what's in the next one!

When they said that Minmay looked just like his GF, that was actually a pretty clever connection.

this was pretty interesting. this might sound kind of lame, but I feel like I have so much more in common with these old-school otaku than all these new age moe kids!

Did the last interviewee masturbate??

The anime is actually pretty boring so far, hope it gets better in the second OVA. However, the interviews were really interesting.

I guess to truly "understand" this anime (not that its confusing, mind you) you'll have to look back at the time it was made in and in what situation pre-Eva Gainax and the industry were...not that I understand much about it :D
I liked the interviews and look into otako culture while also showing(or referencing) the history of Gainax.

A very realistic way of portraying the Otaku culture.

Finally a realistic view on otaku.

So many ppl nowadays call themselves otaku like its nothing.. But in japan its a big deal and still considered as outcast.
While this may seem oitdated, its still the case sadly.. Eventho we might think its not due to akihabara being there.. But otaku are just not accepted and usually love 2d over reality or if they are interested in reality, its hard to find a girl who is ok with it.

Otakus are hardcore collectors or fans , otaku meaning overly obsessed (so can be military as well which is shown here, its not lomited to anime)

Not just a casual watcher or even if you watch daily.. Otaku life is way more obsessed. Like all shown here, sleeping? Nope. If i can get a goodie i stay awake an entire day.. Yup. Some even sleep in front of comiket for example.

Anyways yeah i loved this, it gives me some real insight on things..

A truly interesting, entertaining, and funny episode. Glad there's one more after this

those interviews were something else, that first guy made me so sad. Hope he found a true friend someday.

and that guy with the videotapes is totally the early version of people watching anime at 2x so they can add it to their mal list.

but yeah I kind of love this.

I feel like the friends he had in his otaku clubs WERE true freinds, he even said that he still hangs out with some of them once in a while, I think that question was a bit mean and unfair personally. I feel like there is a bit of shaming going on in these interviews which make me a bit uncomfortable. Though the second interview made me think they might have been staged.

Some of them clearly were staged, so it's kind of confusing. I cant tell which ones are real. Theres one in the second ep where they interview an American guy, and that one is clearly real. The first one also seems real, but yeah it is mean, and he seems genuinely offended.

Well, the thing about early Gainax is that they were pretty much the merry tricksters of the 80s/early 90s otaku/anime scene, so everything is kinda half joking around with them.

True, but what I mean is its genuinely hard to tell if first guys reaction was staged or not

It felt like I was watching an important historical documentary haha. Got virtually all references/recognized posters/etc, made me somewhat pleased (even though I knew about several shows just by reading about anime history, not watching them). Though the picture of an otaku is pretty pessimistic here, especially if you talk about the live-action parts. Didn't realize the last guy was jerking off until I read about it lol. xD

@Rei_III Kubo wears an Amuro-like outfit indeed, I even think it was mentioned in some additional notes to the OVA or something like that. Don't remember any proof about Macross artworks though, but they still feel totally real.

UPD: most likely copied but made to look slightly different to the original designs. "Anno-san's Elint Seekers" are also mentioned, but according to every source I've seen, they're Kawamori's doing.

Glad you're enjoying OnV so far!

Weird to see Sonoda's typical 90s style on something set in the 80s. If it wasn't for the constant year reminder blipping on the side, I would have constantly forgotten when it was set.
Seeing them waiting for the premiere of Nausicaa made me a bit jealous...

The false interviews are the best part of this episode following the descen (fall?) of a "normal" person.

Special mentions to the energetic opening and to the ending's lyrics.

4/5 I got some Minmei, I'm happy.

I wasn't expecting actual names to be used in this video. As for the posters, I was stunned by how real they looked (the Gundam poster, the Nausicaa cinema front poster). Also, were those real photographies of Macross artworks?? @St0rmblade

Is it me or does the hero wear an Amuro-like outfit?

Was it really like that ? It didn't look like it at all. The guy was increasingly more absorbed in his "thoughts" and hobby, to the point it doesn't seem like a hobby anymore but his life (even though we don't see him enough to know the truth). It's not surprising that the young woman met someone else.
As for "bitch", this sounds incredibly judgemental... From what we know, we have no idea how "dirty" she is and how she leads her life.

Hell, maybe sex is her hobby and we should accept it like the young man's hobby. ;) (I'm joking, obviously, but the point is it was the 80s and they are young people. Even though it's in Japan.)

This is not an anime for anyone, for a simple myth: References.

If someone sees this anime and does not know the classics, they will not understand much that is happening on the screen, and even several quotes from the characters and those who were interviewed.
So, this is an anime for "Otaku Hardcore", and not for those who are only limited to the current season anime.

wow! i wasn't expecting that! i mean, i knew that this was gonna be a spoof on Otaku culture. but damn, kinda felt like they went for the throat on this one hahaha. the stereotypes! i've been aware of the stereotypes and have had some of them cast upon me by others, but seeing them maxed out on screen like this was a little jarring. then there were the survey results and statistics confirming those images with facts(?). topping it off with the dates of major events that were occurring around the same time made it seem like the characters were wasting their lives while important things were happening in the outside world.

this is supposed to be one of the classic touchstones for anime fans, but the first episode felt a little mean spirited. i will say i liked how they showcased the industriousness of the otaku characters in the anime portion.

overall though i did really like it. i enjoyed the animation style and the way the interviews were shot. the statistics and the news reports were presented very well. like i said, i knew it was gonna have some fun at the audience's expense. i thought it was gonna be a little more light-hearted.

rewatching it knowing who "Otaking" actually is and knowing a bit more about Gainax in general (hell there's even King from Nadia lol) made the anime part a lot funnier and more interesting than the first time

Finally got around to this after so, so long.

Not bad but I didn't like the interviews interrupting just as things got interesting with the anime part. But I liked how completely degenerate they became.
