Classic?

how about...

Slam Dunk
Touch
Cardcaptor Sakura
GaoGaiGar
Gundam the 1st

Haruhi can't really be a classic, not yet anyway

Haruhi is seen by some as the "cornerstone" of anime. Which is true, it provided us with some new horizons. However, it would not be classified as a classic simply because of its vintage (it's kinda like saying thriller (Michael Jackson) was a classic when it first came out)

yeah, haruhi is still too young!
but remember: this is the "Series thet you think shall become classics" Thread ;)

but it's always good to tell some arguments for or against your future classic choice!

I think Yu Yu Hakusho and Death Note could be classics, as they are both good in their own ways.

Yu Yu Hakusho is a good Action/Comedy series and Death Note has that deep dark theme that makes it so interesting.

Thats just my opinion though....

based on what I've seen, I can say, with certainty, that the following animes will be classics.
Death Note;
Higurashi series;
Kino's Journey;
Welcome to the NHK!;
Mushishi;
Wolf's Rain.

Someone said Ouran High School Host Club, and, mush as I love that series, I dont think its classic material. Though i does have amazingness engraved into it. Lovely Complex, maybe. It's def. the most believable slice of life I've ever seen/heard of. Its genres dont give it much room for greatness, but its done the greatest job it couldve within them.

I doubt Code Geass will ever get anywhere. It's popular now, but if you think about it... it's just exactly the same thing as DN. With mechas. :

Spice and Wolf might qualify, too, but idk, its still very young. AIR might classify, too, but the movie and manga destroy the series and make it generic. Haruhi will never ever become a classic, nor will Naruto, or Bleach. and School Days? D: Seriousy? Cause I seriously doubt its crappiness will ever get it anywhere.

I hope Planetes can be one, but it may not be popular enough.

Planetes? Hell yes!

Besides that:
FMA is not only a heart-wrenching tragedy, but also a good political commentary. It's so up there.
Ghost in the Shell: S.A.C. is pretty much guaranteed, what with the classic status already given to the movie and manga
FLCL is a unique take on the coming of age genre, and definitely popular enough to be remembered.
And I'm too lazy to write more commentary, so here's the rest:
Gunslinger Girl
Haibane Renmei (wait, it's already listed?! You guys do realize it's only six years old, right?)
Kino's Journey
anything by Satoshi Kon
Samurai Champloo
and Wolf's Rain

Edit: And it looks like I forgot Mushishi... *sigh*

@Bakure

Yeah, Haibane Renmei is already listed and yeah, it's just 6 years old! But we somehow never decided, how old an anime has to be, to be classic!

After reading it at the suggestion of a friend who said it resembled Hajime no Ippo, I decided to give Eyeshield 21 a try. I think it may have classic potential, as it does have one or two truly fresh characters and an interesting (if blatantly false) take on Football. It's also roughly doubled the number of American Football players in Japan since its debut, much like other regarded classics like Slam Dunk and Initial D. I'm only really saying this about the manga, though.

Time will tell, as it's still publishing. But I think it has the best odds out of any WSJ series of becoming an eventual classic.

Fatal Fury the Movie, Fatal Fury 2, Fatal Fury: Legend of the Hungry Wolves. I was lucky enough to find all of them in a 2nd hand shop, all in excellent condition, and on a whim (but really I buy any anime I see and give it a chance) bought them. Especially the movie is really good imo, classics time zone, so already a classic to me, but I think it should be included on the list here. If any one like action/fighting type anime, you should give it a chance. If you don't like that genre, the comedy is kinda good but sure, you probably won't like it that much. Rather a DBZ (better story by far than that to me) and a Street Fighter type mix.
