THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
Yuuko! T_T OMG Yuuko T_T Right now as I finished this, I am broken in half. Drenched in tears and a mess. This one hit so much that I still can't stop ;-; Yuuko!

After like 24hrs, I recovered enough to write something. Man this episode hit me harder than #6 ever did when I watched it. #6 was pretty bad already as it was.

The whole coloring of the episode right away made me think decay and the word die featured twice also told me about decay in my mind which in turn meant someone would die/suffer. I did not know and refused to believe such until that bad scene.

Mizuki is so cute when small. She called herself Miki back then and was terribly shaken. It looked she suffered a lot or was traumatized a lot by something.

Well the black thorns I think have to do with the earthquake and how much it destroyed.

Nagi and Yuu were nice to see and Nagi seems not to be as she used to be so she changed. I think she even encouraged Yuu in his current lifestyle.

It was very nice to see Yuu and Yuuko sleeping together. Also nice to see they are living such a peaceful life in their home.

The white scarf Yuuko made was so cute and nice as a present for Yuu. The flowers Yuu had were also nice.

When they were together with Mizuki, they looked like a family together. It was quite nice to see Yuu and Yuuko receive a letter from Kuze that he was playing in other parts of the world (Germany I think?).

Amazing scene with the violin playing and colors floating in. Then it gets better when we find out that Kuze was the one who gave Mizuki the blue ribbon and said to her she is beautiful apparently it's cute but I think deep down the love connection was illustrated at that point because Mizuki trusted Kuze right away and perhaps it may be due to his nice personality but it was there. Now that is innocent cuteness being adored! Little Mizuki :3

Then all changed Everything changed, when that ball went on the street. When those headlights appeared. Everything. Something broke within me. I know I could most likely not describe but it was something so deep that I even do not understand it well.

1.Yuuko, you will always be remembered!
2.Mizuki when she was a kid was so cute!

1.

2.

Why God? Why had this happened? Why? What for? For what? Was there any way to prevent this? Was it supposed to be like that? Should we be so fragile? I keep asking myself with tears when I see those things.

After subs thoughts

The most of the thing that surprised me the most, is most likely the fact that Mizuki's parents were to commit suicide with her!? O_O Now I know I heard about the families trying to do this and all. However the way it was done in this series, it makes one feel far more emotional. I for one was completely disgusted that Mizuki's parents would kill themselves along with Mizuki. It had certainly been quite the worst of many of different traumas we pass each day, to see ones father and mother wanting to kill you just because they explain to you that they are too.

That was the worst and the song's words are great and full of meaning. In any case this episode should get even if it was not to alls tastes, a 10/5 but since it's 5, well 5/5 for me.

BTW: very cute of Kuze to say to Mizuki you are cute.

I think it's not the real CoalGuys release, just someone that wanted to make fun of the OP Karaoke subbing style in the last episode (Ejaculating Penis), so he released a fake release under their name.

NOOOOOOOOO! Yuuko, why!?

Her final words/thoughts were:
"まだ話したいことがあるんです。" "There's still things I want to say."
"もう一度ゆうくんに会いたい。" "I want to meet with Yuu-kun one more time."
Sad sad sad episode.

But now we know, Miki == Mizuki. That's how Mizuki knew who Yuuko was.

I loved this scene:

Why does there have to be a depressing occurrence or reveal every episode? I'm glad I held this till after my finals exams because I would have been half dead trying to study last night.

Aw, I knew she was most likely dead.. since she appears in the strangest places, surrounded by feathers, but after the last episode, I thought I was wrong.. but I guess not.

That picture at the end of all the episodes always looked like Kuze and Yuko to me, though, so who knows what will happen next. Maybe she's in a coma, since Mizuki said she was giving her the courage to live in the end of the last episode.

This explains why Yu takes such good care of Chihiro after she gets into her accident. =(

What a ... non-heroic death. Really. I wouldn't say dead already. She might be still alive. Referring to the spoiler beneath in this post. She got hit by a car. That's all? That's really sad.I expected that one already. What's now left is the puzzle of why she can appear in the present... I guess she turned into something like an angel, as there was that aura-like light from the sky, the ''godly'' or ''heavenly'' light. Is it just me or is there someone else who thinks it weird that they haven't been able to recognize Mizuki as the Miki from then up until episode 9?

Oh, and Slayer545, Kuze didn't actually told her she was beautiful. Lol. It's called cute and I don't think that it was love already. Miki liked the tune, and because of the fact that children tend to be interested in things they don't know, it's only normal that she was going to trace where the music came from and she met with Kuze. It's a common thing to be friendly to cute or young children, isn't it? Seeing those colours appearing when she heard the music was nice, especially when almost the whole episode has been in black and white. It pretty sucks that there are only two episodes left now...

Agree with Yandere. It could be something like Shigofumi. It's not certain that she's really dead.
I seriously want back to the present now!

I did a edit on my comments about that Miki liked the tune, and because of the fact that children tend to be interested in things they don't know, it's only normal that she was going to trace where the music came from and she met with Kuze. It's a common thing to be friendly to cute or young children, isn't it? Agree with Yandere. It could be something like Shigofumi. Also agreed it might be like Shigofumi but if so where is the body? If there is no grave then yes but should we see the grave then.....OMG we know for sure and would not be able to deny at the very least but I think I saw Yuuko see the light and her pulse fade away completely. I hope not but who knows. It's not certain that she's really dead.
I seriously want back to the present now!

I agree, this was pretty... random?
It didn't touch me at all. Only as the music faded in I got some chills.

And also you see it happen, then in the next scene there's Nagi, Yuu and Miki smiling and talking and all? Seemed to be an atmosphere killer to me.

I think I'm gonna cry... It was so sad. I knew it, but this mixed plot made me wonder if I would be mistaken. Ehh... I hope that the next episode bring something optimistic, couse I don't want this series to end like this, no no no!

For me it was only much more sad, couse they didn't know anything... But yeah, why she was alone and under the tree after something like that...

Eh, the only part that made an impact on me what seeing Yuu's response to her being hit.
Honestly, her getting hit by the car was a horrible way to die. Why didn't the driver take her to the hospital or someone that may have seen it? Why does she crawl over to a tree and just die? I think the more rational thing to do would be to try to and get help.. not just curl up and die.
Not a favorite episode for me - especially because it was black and white the whole time and it made me sleepy. Anyway, 3/5.

I really don't think she's dead.

Remember, at the end of season 1, Yu finally saw Yuko and told her he finally came - that was definitely present day.

I kind of figured Yuko dressed differently because it was some time later and she was probably colder. I always thought she was a nun of some sort, abandoning men since they aren't very good to her.

Also! In the episode, Yuko had no gloves for a little bit! Her hands were clean and free - she was happy. =o

Also! Miyako and Mizuki have always reminded me of each other, so maybe that's going to be part of it, too.

And Mizuki was praying for Yuko to have the strength to live, which kind of suggests that she's not dead.

If she is dead, Kuze's really cruel for saying Yu will never see her again. =o

And! She ran to the violin because that's the song that Yuko was singing along to.

Also! It does make sense that they would not recognize Mizuki - she kind of looked like she might have had a bit darker hair when she was little and.. she was just a little girl - you can't tell what someone will really grow up like and if they spent only this much time with her, it would be really easy to block it out.

Remember, that she doesn't remember them, either. She told Yu that he didn't know Yuko, which means that she doesn't remember him or that time - at least to an extent.

Also, from the looks of it, she had no choice but to crawl over to that tree, out of the road. She was dying and there's no way she could get up and go to a hospital.

However! I did think it was odd that Yu was just carrying her, instead of running to a hospital with her, but who knows.

And the driver probably just drove off because it's someone in particular - maybe the same person that hit Chihiro, too.

1. That is odd and confusing me. Why is it so? He was present at that time so why not remember him? It would be impossible for Yuu not to remember Yuuko from that time and Yuuko I forgot to mention also knew little Chihiro and Kei Shindou.

2. Me too I find that odd but maybe that can be a sign that Yuuko has passed away already. He would not be like that should he knew that Yuuko would be breathing.

3.That I would not be so sure but it might be the same one. Is there any way to know?

Nice episode I just think that Yuuko's death or accident was done too fast.

Now I guess that next episode they will show Mizuki challenging Kuze to a violon concert where she is going to use Yuuko's lyric.
That's going to be the end to the Kuze's arc I guess.

Last episode will probably revolve the end of Yu/Yuuko's arc but Kuze and Mizuki are linked to Yu and Yuuko so maybe they will do a double episode and fuse both arc into one.

I doubt Melodies will finish happily like memories.

My guess on Kuze dying on Mizuki's leg while she sing Yuuko's lyric with Yu and Nagi watching it with a sad look.

So, I really liked this episode up until the Rumbling Hearts portion. Very sweet episode that gave a lot of context to Mizuki's feelings. Didn't really see a reason for this episode to be in black and white either. If the whole show had been in black and white, and this was the episode in color, I would really understand, but this episode did so much for the show, to strip the color away seems like a terrible choice. Maybe if it had been the starker black and white, the kind they normally use in the opening and such, instead of the grayscale/sepia I would have just loved the episode, but a 4/5 for me.

Ok, first off

I cried. This was in my opinion the best episode so far.

It was soooo sad but it also made me understand a lot of the connections everyone has together.

I saw the car scene and I got pissed. Then she started singing and I really had a good cry. Last time I cried this much was at the ending of Air.

Also the proper CoalGuys release got released. They also told about the penis troll.

Anyways I'm off, (SUCH A NICE EPISODE Q_Q)

Okay, question: How the f**k do you get hit by a car and then left for dead under a tree? What kind of person hits a girl dead on then drives off? This episode is unfathomable to me. I absolutely adored the first season of ef, and normally, I would cry over something like this, but I felt nothing here. Nothing at all. It was too random and stupid. I feel more angry than anything else. This should have been so much better than it was.

Perhaps your only hope is the DVDs and they might remake the scene but for me at was more than enough. Maybe that is because I just started with Japanese anime.

I agree, of course, I probably wouldn't have cried in the first place since I had seen it before in a show, but the voice acting certainly brought it back down, as she died under the tree (though I thought the singing was corny).

somehow this was.... stupid....
it wasn't even sad. man how stupid you have to be to drop something and get run over a car so hard you die. and OF COURSE the first thing you do in unbelievable pain is crawling to the next tree near to you to sing your last lullaby.
that's all anime cliche I'm well aware of and i can accept. IF the pacing is right. it was all rushed in the end and totally obvious and cliche.

that everything was in pseudo b/w (it was a little reddish) was okay for me. they did it so that i forgot about it after just a few minutes. im also happy about the ending song beeing more or less vocals only. cant stand the original opening much.

after rereading my post i sound like a bastard i know. I'm usually not this way but that's how i felt this episode. story developed fine and everything fits together. it fitted so well that even her death was nothing special - something truly obvious.

For some reason I kind of knew this was going to happen... especially with the black and white background (and no opening!).
I was wondering if Yuuko was going to die, because in the first season I figured she was an angel since she popped randomly around and helped others out.

Maybe she's not dead, maybe just in a coma like others are saying... then again maybe not.
I hope she pulls a D.Gray-man and doesn't die >: Though it's likely she died. (With the light being there and her voice singing fading and all...) But being hit by a car is an... awkward, yet cruel, way to die. Most animes don't have characters die (Especially main ones) if they are hit by a car.

Unless the driver hit her over and over numerous times... I don't think she died. But I'm probably wrong, since the episode implyed greatly that she died. Or the producers of the anime want us to feel sad and depressed and then the next episode will be filled with happy flowers of lemon scented happiness and nobody dies.
Or once again, I'm probably wrong and this anime will most likely end in a horrible, sad, and depressing way.
you are my master.

Well ladies and gents, now you know why they put Chihiro's arc in memories rather than melodies. I don't mean to sound insensitive here, but I am shocked that they didn't have an eroge scene with Yuuko. I guess they are toning down the abundant sexual overtones of ef...but why damnit WHY!?

They also changed the way Yuuko died and I am damn pissed really. The original would have been better and would have far better explained the relationship between Mizuki and Yuuko, but they prompted to connect her more with Kuze...

Such a wonderful death scene and they decided to change it...ugh why SHAFT WHY!!!!? Yuuko didn't deserve such an anti-climactic death damnit...

I honestly believe that they just offed Yuuko for the sake of doing it. I mean seriously, they never even used the one thing they overemphasized in the episode.

If you recall, they showed numerous scenes of Yuuko knitting a scarf for Yuu. Hell they even emphasized her placing it in a bag before heading out to meet Yuu. After that...nothing...it disappeared from the face of the earth. That scarf will eventually play a significant role later on, probably at the very last scenes of melodies.

They probably decided to just skip the whole Yuuko/Yuu thing since they were running out of time. The Miki/Yuu scene that was supposed to have occurred AFTER the accident happened BEFORE it.

They made lots of changes, some artistic, some truncating of the story, and some originals, but this just takes the cake. Yeah I'm only uselessly bitching/whining about it now, but I can't help it since I felt cheated so to speak.

I dunno. I can't decide if Yuuko's death was sudden and kinda like wow! in a bad way or a good way.

When Makoto and Ayu died, I laughed. I wish she had stayed that way.

Was she really pregnant?
If that is the case then the game is even worse in mental shock. The only time I saw something like that was in one more other anime and trust me I think I want EMO and cooled off because the girl was pregnant but killing act was just too much.

Had to be some movie.

I only have one thing to say: Ho...ly...shit...

This ep cemented ef as one of my favourite animes ever. I actually cried at an anime more than ever (the only other time I have was the end of ef - a tale of memories)..just wow..
