Back from "vacation," in the mood for another casual thread.

First off, let's go with a definition:
In forum parlance, it means rushing to the aid of another poster for whatever reason. An accusation typically reserved for when a poster is being hammered by another poster(s) and the accused leaps in to defend them, usually without thinking things through as to why the person is being attacked.

—Urban Dictionary (definition 1)

Ignoring the obvious reason of "to get laid hurr durr", why do people do it?

Acceptable behavior? Been guilty of doing it yourself?

Hi there! I bet you didn't notice this ghost white text at first sight. Feel free to leave a stupid comment related to how you saw this message!

Maybe something along the lines of "MellowJello is such a mellow fellow". Idk. BOPPITY BOOP BOP.

I know you comprende. It's when people stick up for other people for whatever reason on the internet. I'm asking what that reason is. And people's opinion on it of course.

They identify with people they defend or their positions. So when you challenge person A's statements, person B feels like you are attacking their beliefs. Its a matter of ego.
Next question.

I suppose the same reason people do charity. They want to feel better about themselves.
In this case particularly by feeling like a real "alpha" knight by defending the wee womenfolk in their time of distress. And I assume most likely because they would never do something like that IRL.

I usually do it when I agree with someone getting hammered and want to hammer the person who's doing the hammering. IMO white knighting generally helps in that situation.

Yes.

Everyone should adopt a policy of indifference, that way they'll never feel the need to be a white knight.

I think there is enough hate that the white knight just assumed whoever they like/identify with/sympathize with was catching hate because people like to hate. not always the reason sure, but a lot of times people like to insult each other without even thinking about the conversation that's happening. I guess that makes it a little hypocritical since white knight becomes one of the ones not listening.

I guess in an argument, people will do it because they disagree with the person who's doing the "attacking".

I've most certainly done it. Just look at the SAO boards.

To be a hypocrite.
As a child, I was told that society is a melting pot of talents; knowledge and experience combined to form important alloys that will contribute to mankind. When I got to highschool, however, I thought that it's more like a river in which the water represents our peers while we ourselves are the stones in the river. Constant erosion by mindless majority sheeping has made us lose our unique edge. After I hit the age of 18, I realized that I've been wrong all along. Society is no melting pot. Society is no river. Society is a person, a very skilled rapist, and he has fucked us all.

Hmm, well if the person I'm defending's views are the same as mine, then obviously, I'll want to defend them, thereby defending my own views. (So in a sense, it's building up egos )

Other times, I just want to be a dick and join in on the fun.

I do not understand this thread. What exactly is the controversy in an act of compassion? Rules of the Internet be damned, is it really that perplexing to some of you people that someone wants to correct a perceived injustice that they're witnessing?

Because that's what I see when someone is being the White Knight. They're essentially rescuing a person from a virtual lynching.

I think on the forums I never did such a thing when whatever position/view was already heavily defended/attacked, since there is nothing for me to add-on. But when I see someone getting tired/attacked by more than one person in their views, and coincidentally I share that view, I will join in.

I think with this a civil discussion can get ugly quite fast though i.e. flaming and such, so in a way, I try to steer clear from the crowd.

You're free to question the thread, but as a response to your question(s): Yes, it is perplexing. Because it's the Internet. Rules of the Internet not be damned. At the end of the day shit happens and everyone moves on (hopefully). So why bother defending someone?

And for the second part, did they ask for saving? A lot of white knights jump in willy-nilly, and I'm asking why they do it (in your opinion, of course).

They do if everyone involved is being relatively reasonable about it.

For example:
If Person A is bashing Person B for having view 1
and Person C comes in "white knighting" making person B's opinion sound more reasonable or pointing out how Person A's response was too extreme,
Person A realizes that bashing Person B was uncalled for and that he should have been more civil
and Person A gains more respect for Person B while Person B stops getting flamed

That can happen, just doesn't because everyone on the internet is immature.

More like Person A ends up bashing Person B & C. And then a Person E & D come and bash Person B & C too.
