What's the deal with "white knighting"? - Forums

Back from "vacation," in the mood for another casual thread.

First off, let's go with a definition:

In forum parlance, it means rushing to the aid of another poster for whatever reason. An accusation typically reserved for when a poster is being hammered by another poster(s) and the accused leaps in to defend them, usually without thinking things through as to why the person is being attacked.

Ignoring the obvious reason of "to get laid hurr durr", why do people do it?

Acceptable behavior? Been guilty of doing it yourself?

In this case particularly by feeling like a real "alpha" knight by defending the wee womenfolk in their time of distress. And I assume most likely because they would never do something like that IRL. IMO white knighting generally helps in that situation. It is said God created the universe, but where did God come from? Luckily in this age of science we have found the answer.
