Hm, I don't pretend to know why he's so popular, though I suppose he has an understated sense of chivalry (apart from his views on women). I think that he's probably my second favourite character. Yay, anarchy!

I figured mimura would be first. but no one has anything on sugimura.

I much prefer Sugimura as a person in general to Mimura, but I think Mimura's political views and the bombing attempt made him my second, but just by a nose.

It's definitely between Mimura and Kawada for me. No other male character even comes close to these guys. Takako is the best female character, and third best character overall. One of the few anime or manga females who is actually really fucking cool.

Since he's tied with the one-dimensional Kiriyama and overrated Sugimura though, I'll bump up Kawada.

Kawada has been my favorite since the first time I read the manga. He's analytical, powerful (even while unarmed), and supports the team as a whole. He also constantly works toward his own, independent victory, but we all have our vices... :P (Treachery for the sake of a lost love is fine by me)

Ever since an RP awhile back, I've used his name as one of my online nicknames. And yet, even setting aside that fact, Shogo would likely still be my favorite character were I to re-read the manga/novel today.

I'm surprised no one voted Souma. I thought she'd be quite popular.

So did I, but I guess she's beaten by a couple of others. I'm not surprised, however, that no-one has voted for Noriko. Her purpose seemed to be to make life difficult for Shuuya and Kawada.

Best female character was the girl who was with Sugimura in the end. I forgot her name.

Takako Chigusa (but even I had to look up one name).
Edit: BAD BAD BAD! Going to devise a cruel and unusual punishment for myself now.

Not, Taka is the one who has the life and death battle with Niida, who is trying to rape her. After barely managing to win, she is killed by Hardcore Souma.

She tells Sugimura that she's always loved him with her dying breath, but Sugimura has always viewed her as a sister type, and loves a different girl in class.

The girl Sugi loves, and finds in the end is Kayako, who kills him in the novel and film, or accepts his love in the manga, before they're both killed by Kiriyama.
