To all you Mahou Shoujo Madoka lovers you should just watch Zero no Tsukaima for a good Mahou Shoujo.

No, I came up with this recommendation by the fact that they are both mahou shoujo. But Zero no Tsukaima is actually good.

But Zero no Tsukaima is not really a mahou shoujo. It's a harem magic anime. So I don't see why they would be compared like that, their atmosphere and stories are also very different.

Doesn't Mahou Shoujo mean "Magic Girl"? Louise is a girl that can do magic therefore she is a Mahou Shoujo.

It does but mahou shoujo is more sailor moon and those other ones with wands and transformations most of the time set in a real setting.

Zero no Tsukaima is more of a fantasy setting with magic. It is a shounen harem anime. The main characters is Saito, not Louise, there are other anime where characters use magic but aren't considered mahou shoujo.

I would even go so far to say that Madoka isn't a Mahou Shoujo, but the story is based on Mahou Shoujos in general.
I am also doubting, that there are any animes, which can be compared with Madoka, because the anime is just too outstanding and unique in so many ways, that mere similarities in other animes (Uta Kata, Death Note, Haruhi, ef etc.) aren't enough to make those shows compareable.

By your own logic, ZnT still falls under mahou shoujo since Louise uses a wand, much like Sailor Moon. Mahou Shoujo Tai Arusu was also set in a fantasy world, so how can you dismiss something as not being a mahou shoujo simply because of it's setting?

Clearly you haven't watched Sailor Moon or Princess Tutu if you think anything Madoka does is unique.

By that logic The Legend of Zelda is a Magical Girl game series and Princess Zelda fights evil by moonlight while winning Link's love by daylight.

...Silly me for being a fan of the genre and going "Hey! A darker, more serious take on the genre!" Then I watched it and backed away screaming "TOO DARK! TOO DARK!"

The thing are there is many other things that are darker and people give this anime so much credit for being the first dark mahou shoujo when its not and for doing the whole go back in time to try and fix the future. Princess TuTu was pretty dark for a mahou shoujo and if you want dark watch Higurashi no Naka Koro ni. It did the whole reverse time to fix the future too. The storyline of madoka wasn't up to par for the hype it got and I think they executed poorly.
