Well, personally I've been reading the novels in release order, but of course chronological order is much more consecutive, leaving fewer holes in the plot.
This order seems quite logical:
1) "Shadow of the Moon, Sea of the Shadows" - (Introduction to the world of The Twelve Kingdoms. Youko becomes Empress of Kei.)
2) "Thousand Miles of Wind, Sky of the Dawn" - (Youko manages her duties as a queen. Youko, Suzu and Syoukei free Wa Province in Kei.)
3) "Sea God in the East, Vast Sea in the West" - (Story of Enki and the Emperor of En who suppresses rebellion.)
4) "Sea of the Wind, Shore of the Labyrinth" - (Now the most fascinating part of all the Twelve Kingdoms chronicles - Taiki's story. =) Adorable black Kirin Taiki chooses the Emperor of Tai.)
5) "The Demonic Child" - (The very first novel of Juuni Kokuki which wasn't published by Tokyopop, but you can read an amateur english translation of it - websites above. It's about Taiki's story in modern Japan, after he disappeared without a trace from the Kingdom of Tai. Nothing similar to the previous novel, though - atmosphere is dark and intriguing. Worth reading.)
6) "Shore in Twilight, Sky at Daybreak" - (Probably is my favourite novel. Woodbury's translation of it is just great. Risai meets Youko to request help in summoning Taiki. Actually made me cry. =)
7) "The Aspired Wings" - (Syusyou becomes Empress of Kyou.)
8) "The Dream of Prosperity" - (And finally - various short stories: Tai, Hou, Kei, Sai, Sou. Very interesting.)
+ Seems like Fuyumi Ono has got to work on another Juuni Kokuki novel. "Hisho no Tori" (2008!) was published in Yomyom magazine. Set in Kei, the main character of it is an artist preparing inaugural festivities for Youko, and not very fond of her. Sounds promising, huh.
That's it. Juuni Kokuki surely is a masterpiece. ^_^ |
