Is it just me or is this slightly lower than usual for Hyouka's opening week sales?

Zetsuen made it on DVD sales at least, so yay.

SAO still dominates as expected. Wow, considering people in Japan pay over $100 for one Blu-ray and around $80 for one DVD of 3 only episodes, that's about 2.5 M in the first week right there.

once again, mostly a bad week for the great shows I watched this Fall.

Zetsuen no Tempest...how can people not appreciate this awesome show? At the most, I guess less than 2k? great.

Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun...OUCH! What is with the DVD sales falling into pieces like this? This show deserves the sales which shows like Dog Days or Hyouka gets.

KamiMashita...didn't even rank on DVDs in it's second week. I was really hoping that this would get at least a 3k average but I guess that's also out.

Now for some happier news, Psycho Pass 2 does nearly 6.6k for it's first week. Much more than last time but I still feel this show deserves 20k or more. It's just mind blowing. Did this one have an event ticket or something(just in case)?

KuroBas fandisc does waaaaaaaaay better than I expected. One of the only shows which I really liked which did good.

Really, really disappointed to see so many good Fall series doing horribly.

Good to see that on there, though it should have sold more. Girls und Panzer growing ever stronger. I wonder what volume 2 will sell.

Why is ZnT not on the Autumn rankings?

Idolmaster started three years earlier than lovelive so the fanbase is already solid today. Lovelive has also solid fans though. The biggest difference in my opinion is the music they produce. Lantis should step up if they want lovelive to succeed.

Wareta Ringo was #9 on amazon anime CDs yesterday so I too expected more. Bought my copy, love the new ED even more, Yuki ni saku hana! Wonder if Shinsekai Yori 3 will show up in the extended list again with <1000, sigh...

Kotoura-san and Da Capa III CDs did pretty good. I love those shows but not the OPs as music to listen to repeatedly so I didn't buy those discs myself. Hope that will translate into BD sales. I have preordered those already.

And Girls und Panzer continues to drive over all else. I am glad my preorder for volume 2 was placed in December so I should be at the of the list. Unless they pressed more than 20000 there could be disappointment and delays again.

Tonari at least ranked for DVDs this time. BD should be on the extended list. Wow, Natsume in a red and pink striped bikini didn't sell??? Tonari is somehow in no man's land, shojo aren't buying it and neither are otaku...

Zetsuen should be on the fall list but only as barely ranked...

Glad to see ZnT on the list even if its only 1K :P And yeah poor Robotics Notes..but we'll probably see it in the full list.

Next week: Volume 1 of Magi, Hiiro no Kakera S2, Sakurasou, Jojo, Medaka Box Abnormal (These are the last from fall not counting the TV shorts) plus big sellers like Kuroko and Horizon :p

Since the BD threshold is above 2k, we may actually the BD sales data for Zetsuen later in the full weekly BD list -- it may be another 1 or 2k to be added to the 1k or so DVD sales. I am still cautiously optimistic about this.

2ch is busy comparing the performances of the sales to its nearest rival. So far SAO has beaten the sales of Infinite Stratos at every volume. The question is whether this high level of sales of SAO can sustain for its entire 2-cour length so that its series average stays above IS (which is just 1 cour in length). On another note, GirlPan has beaten the total sales of KuroBas for vol.1 sales (23k vs 21k). If GirlPan keeps selling better than KuroBas (which sold >24k for vol.2, >21k for vol.3, almost 26k for vol.4) it will snatch the 2012 YEAR TOP FOUR position from KuroBas. This competition is being closely watched.

Idol@Master is sweeping up half of the top 10 in Oricon Singles Chart, which is truly awesome. Given that it is "merely" the mobile phone version of I@M it is all the more astounding. However for those who said "IM@S>>LOVELIVE", it is true only to the extent that IM@S is hugely successful but LoveLive iteslf is pretty successful if taken on its own. Just look at the sales of its recent best album. (and I would say the ongoing LoveLive anime has really impressive sakuga, and solid story too)

Shinsekai Yori's ED should sell more. I heard that there is out-of-stock situation in quite a number of stores, and if it is as bad as GirlPan OP and ED, we may see the final sales coming to a few times the first week's number (in GirlPan's case it is over 4 times).
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

It makes the market in Japan continue to look pretty grim and anti-variety no doubt. Basically there now appears to be a very limited bordering on non-existent avenue in which it's possible to do certain kinds of shows like we saw in fall (Tempest, Shin Sekai Yori, Btoom, Jormungand!) now and to still have a shot at a decent return on them. The shows you mentioned are by no means bad by my standard and you'd think they'd capture at least some more attention than that but I guess it has to be the more moeish shows that sell now. Basically it just continues to tell the industry not to try anything else other than what you get from the likes of Girls und Panzer and iDOLM@STER cause no matter how much effort you put into the production it's basically throwing good money and resources after bad unless you have an established name attached to it or lots of marketable cute girls.

Pretty much one show I really liked from fall has even done remotely well and that's Psycho-Pass and it's probably only because it has Gen Urobuchi's name on it and has nothing to do with the quality of the writing and production itself, not kidding myself here. It just looks so brutally bad in Japan right now, like if you're a new director or writer have and have an idea that's outside the box you're better off moving to France or the U.S or something and trying your hand in those markets. If you're an artist though at least maybe you have a shot at getting into manga where at least there's a regular mainstream audience of all ages and tasters and thus some room for flexibility and different ideas.

I was really feeling anime was starting to make a turnaround of late and like there was a real effort to try different types of genres again like cyberpunk, straight drama, fantasy and grimdark action , but these results continue to worry me that it'll only be fleeting at best and we'll be lucky to see it continue beyond the Spring season this year. At this rate I just see the industry going back into it's safe tried and true moe show formula shell since that seems like about the best shot at scoring a surprise hit like Girls Und Panzer and earning and honest living. When stuff like Dog Days is vastly outselling the likes of Shin Sekai Yori and Zetsuen no Tempest and with about a fraction of the effort put into the overall production I think it's time to call it a career if you had planned on making more shows like the latter.

Well, I would say that something like the standard fares in Japan would be considered quite out-of-the-box in US or France. What I mean to say is that cultural sensitivity and what is popular can vary quite a lot from country to country, and each country has its share of dull and unimaginative commercial creations. And if we talk about the really innovative and avant-garde, I can see there are as much, if not more, such animation creations coming from Japan as are from France and America.

True, but very little looks as bad to me as the anime market when it comes to what buyers will pay money for and what they won't and it just having little to do with general quality. I'd hate to be someone as talented as say Shinichiro Watanabe, Chiaki J. Konaka or Mamoru Ooshi right now and just be absolutely struggling to find paying work because you happen to delve into futuristic or retro settings and favor straight drama and challenging scripts a lot of the time for example. Japan just doesn't seem to appreciate those types anymore it seems. It kind of looks like the likes of those peoples time has already passed and to me that's just criminal.

For the record I realize that this is sort of the case for a lot of mediums of entertainment, but with anime it just seems magnified somehow. It's probably cause of just how small and insular the industry has become since the total collapse of anything that resembled an overseas marketing scheme.

While I agree that some of the good works do not seem to be rewarded with good BD/DVD sales, (note: it does not necessarily mean it is not successful though, otherwise we should never have seen a 2nd season of Chihayafuru for example) I must also stress that when it comes to "general quality" it can be something not as objective as we may want to think. What we think as unimaginative may well be something fresh and cool to those who pay money for it. I guess in some way it is like other forms of popular entertainment, like pop music, where we may want to judge from our high horse how "innovation" or "new idea" is lacking but yet the picture is rarely as grim or hopeless as the doomsayers put. There are always many factors at work, some are more adventurous while some more about seeking to ride on whatever is currently popular.

There is indeed some truth in it, but I would argue that compared to published media like novels or manga (comics), anime (animation) is always going to have less variety, not least because the amount of capital and effort required compared to getting a novel or manga/comics published, and this is not limited to Japan. The only trend that I see that may be more Japan-specific is the increased number of works that are adaptations, and this may be one crucial factor in the relative lack of variety in anime being made these days, as the kinds of genres that result in anime adaptation may not have that much variety (for example, I mentioned some time ago that a lot of seinen manga get adapted into live-action movie/drama instead of anime).

As much as I like Zetsuen no Tempest I can't blame people for not buying it after seeing what Hakaze has become in the second half.. I doubt that's the reason though, but still.

Anyway, mainly looking forward to next week when we get Jojo sales!
And still impresses by how well GirlPan is doing. It's a shame it won't pass SAO though.

Anime is a niche industry that focuses on what its hardcore fans want, moreso than nearly any other medium. Who are we as outsiders to say what they should make for that hardcore fanbase when most of us don't even import? We're just outsiders who should be happy we are able to watch it at all.

This seems to be an argument that goes backward, given how many fans in Japan are saying that if Zetsuen had started like what it is in the second half, it would have kept more people watching and hence sold more BD/DVDs. In fact some even wonder if the better reception of the series in its second half may have helped the sales of vol.1

I import! If more westerners did we might get more of what we want. Not sure they know how many of amazons shipments end up going offshore but they know how many Sentai et al sell. Give them an alternative market not just a little top up and they might care what we like.

That said, Vivipan looks like it is tailor made to sell to otaku. If it doesn't sell then I don't know what will.

That's so true, anime outside of Japan is like a youtube video, readily available with no costs whatsoever (some websites do stream anime with subscription but still, it's dirt cheap compare to what people have to pay in Japan) Therefore, I find it hypocritical for some people to watch anime for free and then go on the internet to bitch about it. But that's for another discussion.

I can see why many are interested in the rankings. Because most people here have no impact on the survival of the industry, we look at the rankings for three reasons: what's popular in Japan to keep an eye on, self-fulfillment when our favorites do well, and most importantly, rankings strongly influence whether or not a particular series get another season, OVAs, etc.

I import! If more westerners did we might get more of what we want. Not sure they know how many of amazons shipments end up going offshore but they know how many Sentai et al sell. Give them an alternative market not just a little top up and they might care what we like.

Believe me, when I grow up, finish school, finish college and get a job, if there are anime airing at that time which I like, I will buy it for sure!
It's not like I don't WANT to import.
I still buy manga from time to time to support the manga which I like.

That's great! Do what you can! Buy the manga, a figure, a CD, every little bit helps.

I really need to watch Girl und Panzer someday. Besides that, I think the less than 10k units for Love Live OP is impressive, but at the same time a bit disappointing. I mean we are talking about an Anime that's focused on the music aspect, that kind of stuff should sell more in my eyes. Also yay for Sakura Taisen making it to the rank.

I think it's disappointing too, but understandable. Idolm@ster was a big hit in the idol sub-genre with a complete sets of Visual Novel, Manga, OVAs, and Anime. Whereas Love Live! only has some OVAs and now getting an anime adaption. So name recognition is a big factor that causes Love Live! to lose aganist Idolm@ster. However, it did beat other OP from the more popular series like Tamako Market and de Capo III, so it's not all bad. As the anime getting more traction, subsequent CDs will sell more

May I ask how many of them you purchased?

I use Crunchy Roll to cut down on bandwidth usage with good quality so 6.95 a month CAD. I try to avoid physical media and outrageous import prices if the option presents itself too.

True, but very little looks as bad to me as the anime market when it comes to what buyers will pay money for and what they won't and it just having little to do with general quality.

Kaioshin_Sama said:
For the record I realize that this is sort of the case for a lot of mediums of entertainment, but with anime it just seems magnified somehow. It's probably cause of just how small and insular the industry has become since the total collapse of anything that resembled an overseas marketing scheme.

I still see it as a closed door mentality though because it's just so hard for certain ideas to break out nowadays that I could see being reasonable hits in the early parts of the 21st century. I can't think of any other entertainment medium where it's this hard. Games have an indie development software and a community that supports them, movies have a thriving independent film sector...I guess with anime the doujin sector is certainly thriving though if 2ch and the like are any indication. If there's any trend in anime I notice that's different compared to a decade ago it's that light novels seem to have taken over manga and original products as the primary source of ideas for anime. Whats popular in the light novel sector almost seems to dictate what's popular in the anime sector now.

And no it's never hopeless, just a total crapshoot. Sometimes you get your Tiger and Bunnies and Jojos and sometimes you get your Tempests and Shin Sekai Yoris

There is also the indie avant-garde animation. It is a niche that is totally out of sight as far as anime fans are concerned (but there are anime production staff who come from that background) -- it is humming along but definitely not commercially big (not unexpectedly).

As for Doujin, it is indeed thriving, and indeed it carries a lot more variety. That said, if you take a closer look at what sells there, you may still find it not to be the genres or styles that you may deem worthy. Instead you may see even more "otaku pandering" there, because even more than the commercial anime, they are anime made by otaku for the otaku without much of an attempt to appeal to outsiders.

There are two major trends in anime world since around 2000: 1) The rise of midnight anime, which actually means that in terms of flexibility anime has more freedom of expression and arguably this led to more variety than the past. 2) The business model shifted and anime got more incorporated in a bigger world of cross-media sales network. This means we see more anime that have links with LNs or games, and the sponsors came to see anime more as a loss-leader for boosting the sales of linked products like LNs, games, manga or merchandise. If such linked products do not exist, the sales of the BD/DVD can become very important since the old model of depending on TV ratings (and thus CM sponsor) does not hold for midnight anime. Hence the increased focus on the BD/DVD sales data nowadays, something that we never bothered paying attention back in 2000 or before.

I would also add 3) Anime tend to be shorter (1-2 cour) nowadays which affects complexity of plot and pacing. This point is related to new business model but I think it's important enough to stress out as well. The only longer anime are kiddy stuff, some battle shounens and Precures/Jewelpets. Space Brothers being amazing exception.

Zetsuen no Tempest...how can people not appreciate this awesome show? At the most, I guess less than 2k? great.

Seriously and I thought it could sell higher because of the character CD included. Still glad to see that the 1st volume made it to the list. 2nd volume will have the OST vol1 included, the OST is another reason why this show should be appreciated as well. Looking forward to the creditless OP and ED.

Very expensive series to own. Two cour usually means three or four episodes per disc but Zetsuen no Tempest is just two episodes per disc meaning twelve discs to buy at ¥7350 each!

By comparison, Bodacious Space Pirates was 26 episodes on seven discs, about half the price per episode.
