Hmmm, hard to say with how little you've seen.

If you want to check out the classics, for now I would recommend:

Soukou Kihei Votoms

Or if you want something more recent:

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

Hello.
I’m looking for two kind of shows. I can’t orient mylsef anymore on this website so I’ll ask here.

Firstly I’m looking for Scifi OVAs or movies from the 80’s or 90’s that are comparable to something that Otomo would do. Dark humor is desirable and they can be gory. They can also be wacky but I’m not looking for something to watch “ironically”.
Bubblegum, Roujin Z and Memories for example.

Secondly I’m looking for shows that feature cute girls. The girls shouldn’t be in any form “pure” but very lively (so nothing like Aria or Kokoro Library). I like these shows wacky with absurd or crazy humor Ecchi is alright. Also I like the art style from the 90’s and the early 00’s (I hate K-On!’s art style).
Good examples are Galaxy Angel, Magipoka and Girls und Panzer.

I know these are strict guidelines but maybe someone knows a show that I’ve overlooked.

Looking at your list it appears to be very hard task to do. All the cute girls shows that popped up in my mind were already in your list. I am not an specialist in OVA's.

Cute girls ... ecchi, crazy. wacky .... not pure.

Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru (try this first)
Dog Days (was a very cute show, fun, but stupid and very ecchi)
Astarotte no Omocha (can't get less pure than this ;D )
Sabagebu! (airing now, ultra violence, parody, cute girls)
Divergence Eve (this also covers sci-fi and gore)
Mouretsu Pirates (cute girls x Space pirates)
Saki (exactly like girls und Panzer but with mahjong and more ecchi)
Chuu-Bra! (little girls form an underpants club. yeah. )
Tantei Opera Milky Holmes (pretty crazy and "lively" characters)
Haiyore Nyaruko-san
Symphogear
Vividred Operation
Sky Girls

Hope something on there interests you.

I second this but forget about Vividred especially if Strike Witches is not your thing.

Since you mentioned something like Girls Und Punzer, as suggested here, Saki and Sky Girls will do.

Thanks for the recs. Dog Days and Saki look really fun.

I'm not sure about Saki, though. I don't really understand mahjong - Akagi went over my head.

I know nothing about the game but had no trouble following the plot of Saki. it focuses heavily on the characters/players, and the overall plot is a sports anime/interhigh tournament structure. Generally, it's very easy to follow what is going on and it's mainly about all the colorful characters.

sabagebu is worth a look too, school club, cute girls but with more satire, violence and more dark humor / black comedy than those shows normally have.

Dog Days has a season 3 starting in January, btw.

Sabagebu is a blast. IDGAF about cute girls but the comedy is gold. I dont think its got that dark humor but then again my standards for what i consider black humor are pretty high (or should I say low?).

So, I asked this in the comment section and only got one reply from Nid to check out Taniguchi, Asano, and Tezuka's work. But, I've got enough money right now to get some manga and, to be honest, I'm not sure what to go for as, despite reading 170+ I still consider myself to be rather new to the format as most of what I've read is one-shots/short series.

As for preferences, I'm not one to really pigeon hole myself so I'll say: psychological, drama, romance, slice of life, action, and mystery. I guess good characterization is big thing for me, I like to feel as though I really have gotten to know he/she/them or, at least, I like them to be pretty fun to follow if it's like a pure slice of life series.

Generally speaking, though, I like characters that have their emotional scars that they don't necessarily have to overcome. Some anime/manga that have these features that I feel do this well are: Evangelion, Beserk, Hunter X Hunter, Monster, Utena, Ruroini Kenshin Trust and Betrayal, and Perfect Blue.

Or just characters growing throughout the story like Akage no Anne, Aria, Solanin, Honey and Clover, etc.

Of course, a good plot is nice as well. It just isn't always absolutely essential for me.

Also, I'm extremely interested in Vagabond, Vinland Saga, Gundam The Origin, Lone Wolf and Cub, and Akira (manga). I don't necessarily care if any of these have the elements I specified above, I just want to hear thoughts on them.

I can't speak for Gundam, LWaC and Vinland Saga, but I can say that Vagabond in print would be a really good idea. Not only is Inoue's art in itself worth the investment, but the story as well is great. The methodical character development mediated through amazing fight scenes, fantastic emotional events all done in meticulously detailed artwork. There isn't a dull moment in Vagabond, the Farm Arc isn't bad like some fans like to say, in fact it's one of the better arcs in the whole manga.

I would also recommend Dorohedoro. It fits under the psychological and mystery genres. The art itself is pretty messy, however the story--confusing at first-- shapes up to be extremely in depth and there are subtle details that you wouldn't notice without a second read around. It starts out as a combination between a black S-o-L and comedy, which later turns it takes a darker/serious turn and the mystery element is really emphasized.

Something that might not fit your needs exactly might be Hoshi no Samidare/Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer. It has one of the best cast of characters that I have read in a manga. And does well both parodying the tropes of shonen manga, while also at the same time presenting an interesting plot. The plot is zany, fun and intriguing; characters are more than they seem and characterization is the strongest trait of the manga. Some of the pages would look wonderful in print.

Or if you want something relaxing and fun, I would recommend Yotsubato. It's pure fun and Yotsuba is super cute. It's not your next Aria in terms of character development, but it is relaxing and entertaining.

Hope I helped.

Yeah, thanks for the suggestions. Dorohedoro is actually something that kind of caught my eye after looking at the enlightenment list, I'd heard it had an influence or at least was similar to Tokyo Ghoul which is a manga I'm currently enjoying. Looks interesting.

Wait, Vagabond has a farm arc? I thought that was Vinland Saga?

I'll certainly look into your suggestions, though I don't know if I'll buy them just yet. I am trying to get something I am fairly confident I'll like for right now and those ones I specified all kind of gave me that feeling. Well, Gundam because I've seen the anime and I hear that this is a more in depth version of a series I already liked pretty well.

Both of them do. And I'd vote for you going for Vinland Saga as well. The action is dynamic and intense, and the characters are interesting and worth getting invested in. I had the chance to buy the first three volumes, but I was broke at the time, so I couldn't. ;_;

I'm currently looking for a few mangas or animes to pass the time with until the Fall season, and thought about getting some recommendations here. I'm pretty much fine with any genre except Hentai and Yaoi. While a part of my Anime list and most of my Manga list hasn't been rated yet, I think the scores I already filled in should give some pretty good pointers towards what I enjoy and what I don't enjoy, so can anybody think of something that I'd possibly like? Thanks for any recommendations in advance~

Irie Aki's stuff (Gunjou Gakusha and Ran to Haiiro no Sekai), maybe Maison Ikkoku, Kingdom, Emma and Otoyomegatari, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, and Ryuushika Ryuushika if you don't mind stuff like this. And maybe Akira as well.

I like how the spines of them form one big picture when you put them together. The only downside is waiting for the next Vizbig volume to come out when you catch up to it. Then again, that's pretty much the downside of getting omnibus/compendium for on-going series, especially for some that go on hiatus.

As for Vinland Saga, I own the first 3 books (6 volumes). The hardcover for them looks nice. I still haven't read them yet, though.

Given the small number of titles you watched I guess you should watch some of the stuff of the basic canon because I couldn't recommend anything very specific. What's basic canon? Well, Miyazaki & Takahata's movies and TV series (Conan(1978)), other movies such as Ghost in the Shell and Akira, and series such as Evangelion, Berserk, Utena, Lain, Trigun, Madoka, RahXephon, Haibane Renmei, Monster, K-On make up a good starting point to get an idea of the breath and diversity of the medium.

Thank you very much for your recommendation.

As for my list and the huge planned list, I choose those animes very carefully and specifically based on friends recommendation and based on what I liked or not. I know I still didn't watch them yet, but I am certain that I will absolutely like them :P. I am kind of picky person :P.

As for your recommendation, I have added "Akira, Lain, Utena, Trigun, Madoka, Haibane Renmei and RahXephon". And "Ghost in the Shell, Monster, Evangelion and Berserk" are already on the list, and they are the first priority. As for Conan, I know it is a great anime but I just don't like it :P.

Any ways, thank you very much for your recommendations, again. Be sure that I will like them all, if otherwise they wouldn't be on the list now :D.

Yeah, I have good instincts about which is good and which is bad. something told me it's not good just from reading the title :v. but I had to check it's geners and then some reviews and recommendations about it. Though seeing it's geners was enough for me :P.

Hmmm, a better alternative to K-On maybe something like Hidamari Sketch or Azumanga Daioh (though both are more on the comedy side than K-On as well which I suppose can make them more appealing in some way), if we are talking pure K-On inspiration (albeit develop on the genre traits better than other shows in the genre)... then I would point you in the direction of shows like "Bamboo Blade" or "Sora no Woto".

Alright, is this thread still active? Cause, yeah, I was wondering if someone could recommend me some stuff. I don't update all that regularly, or completely, and I can never choose favourites so my lists are almost empty. Still, if someone could check out my list :/ Oh yeah, I sometimes rate subjectively. I have some series which are, objectively, complete shit, but which I enjoyed immensely for some reason and rated very highly (mostly because I was in that kind of mood at the time and didn't bother to revise my score). And I should finish Texhnolyze one day :(

Note: reading Holyland at the moment, which isn't in my list yet. It's awesome.

And maybe Kino's Journey and Code Geass.

Proof that I don't update my list often enough -__-

I've read some 220 chapters of Berserk, but then my library ran out of volumes and I couldn't get used to low quality scans.
Diebuster, Gunbuster and HxH are on my mental PTW at least, if not the MAL one.
Monster is for when I have a lot of time on my hands, because I want to watch the anime as well, which is some 70 episodes and it's pretty busy now. I'm reading a bit of Billy Bat though.
Tatami Galaxy is on my priority list, as well as everything by Satoshi Kon (rip dude, you are missed).
Kino's Journey is amazing. I've read some of the LN over at BT, and I've been waiting for a chance to watch the anime.
Last one, Code Geass. It's absolute shit. I don't know why, but I absolutely couldn't stand that one. I watched four or five episodes and couldn't even bring myself to change the status on my list this summer :/ I know it's a classic, but I don't think I'm gonna finish it.

Thanks for the recommendations though, I really appreciate it. I'm just looking for something good that isn't very well known, although I can't possibly ask of anyone to sift through my PTW list, as it's reaching ridiculous proportions. There's probably a lot out there that I haven't even heard of but which I would enjoy immensely, especially older series. I don't know many of those tbh, I only started a little while ago. Might take me a couple of years to watch everything I want to see.

Note: your sig is from Kino's Journey, right? Pretty sure it is, but just wanted to confirm. I should really get me a proper sig and forum pic -__-

If you don't like it, then you probably won't have too much of a problem here, since a lot of our members don't like it either. I don't hate it myself, but you probably wouldn't see me calling it a classic either.
