I was wondering if anyone knew of any decent dystopian-themed animes, with a comparatively decent balance between dark-theme and fantasy. Not TOO morbid and depressing, but not too slice of life.

keywords: Scifi or space, technological, dystopian

Also preferably something an anime newbie could get his head around, since a friend of mine is looking for a decent anime which he could follow (series or movie), so I don't want to scare him with some Serial Experiments Lain or Rahx yet :x

Thank you!

Now and Then, Here and There portrays a brutalised society ruled by an insane dictator. You may find it too morbid and depressing, and I should warn you that, while it's not very explicit, this series will portray really, really nasty things - but it does have a happy ending. Though you may have trouble believing that by the tenth episode or so.

Ergo Proxy, while not in space, it's pretty dystopian.

Edit: oops, missed "newbie could get his head around" nevermind

Seconded, and I'll add:

Battle Angel Alita (the manga is better, but the OVA is a decent intro to it).
Avenger
Bokurano
Kino no Tabi: The land of Sickness
Last Exile
Metropolis
Pale Cocoon
Simoun
Strait Jacket
Tokyo Godfathers
Toshokan Sensou
Wolf's Rain

You could always try World Destruction as well, although it's not too heavy on the dystopia.
What a day! What a lovely Day!

I really like Tide-Line Blue. It's fairly simple and straight-forward.

Dystopian? Not too slice of life? Nah.

Now and Then, Here and There and Bokurano would be good choices though.

I second Battle Angel Alita, Ergo Proxy and Pale Cocoon.
Casshern Sins also has a nice dystopian post apocalyptic setting.

Casshern SINS seconded. It has an apocalyptic world end theme in it. Spiced with some memory loss and drama.

Not exactly sure what you are looking for, but from the sounds of it.. You are seeking an anime that features elements similar to the popular Shin Megami Tensei games. That isn't very popular in anime culture though or I haven't watch that much anime yet.

Death Note: Not exactly what you seek, but it does feature a hero with anti-hero characteristics and elements; although Yagami Light had good-natured intentions, his actions proved him to be in the wrong.

Trinity Blood:The protagonist Abel Nightroad is generally a kind man with good-intentions and is also quite heroic at times, but it is also true that he can be seen as one of the potential villians in your typical fairytale classic or Disney animations when he goes into his berserk mode.

It seems we're using the looser defenition of dystopia. With that in mind, I'll also add my endorsement to
Now and Then, Here and There
Metropolis
Ergo Proxy
Blue Submarine No. 6

I'll add from my own:
Vandread
Submarine 707
Bastard!
Scrapped Princess

Casshern SINS the new version is pretty cool from what I've seen. Definitely has that vibe.

Ergo Proxy ... I don't know. Since it's being brought up here I'll also recommend Texhnolyze. These are both a little out there though, so might not be too user friendly for new fans.

Also one I just finished would be Tekkaman Blade. It's not really emphasized, but the majority of the world is practically destroyed and continues to get devastated throughout the series.
