As I predicted earlier, despite the forecast of Amazon Stalker, Little Busters indeed reached 10k threshold for its volume 1 sales. This makes Little Busters the 5th anime that breaks the 10k line commonly viewed as "Big Hit". It also overtook ToLoveRu Darkness to snatch the much celebrated TOP FOUR slots for the bestselling titles of the season. Although few people had thought the two would be this close, and Darkness actually outperformed its initial prediction while LB! performed substantially below pre-season expectation, it is still a small victory of a kind to LB!.

In fact Hidamari comes tantalizingly close to the 10k mark as well with this week additional sales. Will it reach 10k which would be a very pleasant surprise given it is already in its 4th season?

With the ranking of Chuunibyou this week we can tell that Chuunibyou also sold quite a bit over the Xmas week. The gap between Chuunibyou and Girls und Panzer is now over 3k, which is a number that is bigger than the vol.1 sales of many titles this season. However, I have a feeling that GirlPan should rank if the full top50 ranking of BD for Dec 24-30 is released. We know Chuunibyou would show up in the list given the 1.7k sales which can be deduced from this week's number but I guess GirlPan should have some number too.

It is also hard to imagine that GirlPan cannot even sell 500 copies this week. It seems that the title has gone acutely out-of-stock everywhere. Amazon has stopped more orders for vol.1 for several days already, and as far as I know almost all storefront channels have long stopped taking new orders too. It is a big unknown how much pent-up demand is still around out there waiting for the chance to place orders, and how quickly this will happen before the passion to buy starts to get cooler.

Just for reference, here is the updated vol.1 sales for 2012 Fall Season anime:

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old?

I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them?

I wonder how long people would put up with this.

As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series.

Oh, yea, KamiHaji, K and Psycho Pass!!!!
Regarding KamiHaji I hope the drop for the second volume isn't that huge. ;_;
Also,I don't think there's much coming out next week so I'm KINDA hoping that KamiHaji's first DVD will add another 200 copies or so and it charts. ;_; Will I be lucky? That would make it 4k even without BDs!
And not to mention KamiHaji's budget was waaaaaaaaay lower than Kaibutsu-kun or Sukitte. Anyone can tell that from watching the episodes. So that's even better.

One big news that the initial post cannot cover is this week's weekly album ranking.

CD Album
*7, 15,920 15,920 Uta no Prince-sama shuffle unit CD Camus & Ren
14, *8,927 *8,927 Girls und Panzer Original Soundtrack
24, *5,954 *5,954 Chuunibyou Vocal Album - Dark Iris Musical Grammar

Achieving No.14 in the album ranking for an anime album is harder than ranking high in the singles chart. While the character songs singles of GirlPan did not sell particularly well, it is clear that the soundtrack, with its much discussed pick of melodies from British, German and Russian source, attracts fans even more than the singles.

Im really Stoked Chuu and Hyouka are doing well. Kyoani really busts there ass to make the animation great so hopefully those sales pay off. I think the only way psycho-pass' sales are gonna go up is if something really epic happens in this last half of the season. We'll see.

Although TLR:D only has 1 week of sales, against LB's 2, so we don't know which one really has more sales.

Wow, really nice seeing Kami-sama Hajimemashita with that much sales. It's a good Shoujo show and it deserves to be up there. I do have to wonder if we would ever see the sales for Sukitte Ii na yo. Lots of 10,000+ shows this season, that's good news as well.

This is why we need to have the top 50 BD list for the week of Dec 24. Not only we should see the gap between Chuunibyou and GirlPan not as wide as >3k, but we may see Darkness is still one of the TOP FOUR. At the moment, things are too close to make a definite call.

Just 310 more till 10k ! It's a shame this happened likely because of the event ticket, would be nice if it reached this number by its own. Though hopefully it's still gonna to be at least on the same level as previous season even with the drop, and for a series at its 4th season, that's pretty awesome.

*8, *5,659 Psycho-Pass

Not too horrible from the look of it, but as it is a 2 cour anime, isn't this a bad thing ? Does the good CD sales number help this franchise much ?

And I have a feeling that the proportion of male buyers may be higher than other shoujo shows like Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun or Sukitte ii nayo as I read comments in Japanese forums that wonder if the original manga is really a shoujo manga. Since I did not read the manga or watch the anime, I could not tell what caused them to make such comments, but this is something I have never seen in comments about Kaibutsu-kun or Sukitte.

10k is a "big hit"?

I know that there are no rules for this but i always thought that only 20k+ shows(Nise, Fate, SAO, Horizon) could be called "Big Hits" and 10k+ shows were just "successful shows".

The line that is commonly used in the Sales Thread discussion in 2ch, where the most intensive discussion about the relative performance in terms of sales of anime titles takes place, is that 10k is a big hit. Anything more than 6k is a hit and anything above the "Manabi Line" (slightly below 3k) is a "successful show". The line of 20k is not mentioned as often, although titles like Horizon, SAO, Infinite Stratos are viewed with respect (though sometimes through gritted teeth). Titles that sold as much as Nise or Madoka are treated with awe and often called a 'bakemono", a monstrous hit, to which Bakemonogtari also belongs (LOL).

Just consider this, there have been over 4000 anime TV series since 2000 and up till now there are only fewer than 150 titles which has >10k sales for its vol.1 It only makes sense that a sales achievement that only 3% or so of the titles could make be called a "big hit".

That's right. From a general point of view, as jmal said above, it can be called a modest hit with around 6k sales. On the other hand, if placed against the pre-season expectation, given the information that was available were only things like the staff behind the production, the key visuals, the cast, the trailer etc, it is still not doing bad, with the expectation being 7k (median value) compared to the actual around 6k sales so it is not that underperformed when you look at Little Busters (11k vs predicted 20k) for example.

Might as well post a longer version of the updated Fall season anime vol.1 ranking here.

Key things

1. GirlPan managed to almost catch up Chuunibyou by 2nd week. It is almost certain that its lack of number in the 3rd week is entirely caused by it going out of stock everywhere. It is also almost certain that GirlPan is the top seller (hegemon in 2ch jargon) of the season because a lot of pent-up orders are not yet delivered (in fact there are still fans who want to order vol.1 but has nowhere to go as Amazon is still not accepting order).

2. Darkness sold quite a bit more in its 2nd week. It now not only easily overtook Little Busters, but in fact overtook Gintama to become the 3rd top selling title of the season.

3. Psycho-Pass and KamiHaji both sold substantially more in 2nd week. Both reflected the favorite view built up among fans over the season. Even though KamiHaji is an anime adapted from a shoujo manga, it seems to have attracted quite a lot of male fans too and I can imagine some of them also contributed to the BD/DVD sales.

4. It is good to see some weaker titles finally have number for the vol.1 sales - OniAi is selling at a level comparable to NakaImo, while Busou Shinki has a number that reminded fans of Sky Girls, an older anime that is based on a line of mecha girl figurines similar to Busou Shinki.

5. Shinsekai Yori vol.1 sales figure is lost in the ranking battle, but with the new expanded BD list we know its vol.2 sold 594 copies -- a very disappointing result I must say. The sale for vol.1 would not be much different from this number.

Fantastic news - the BD list has been expanded to a top 100! This is really, really, really huge, and will allow many shows to get an extra week or two (and major hits to get quite a few extra weeks) of data without waiting for the monthly lists, and it's even better for shows that don't sell enough to make the monthly lists.

On the very week when I posted saying we needed more data as well.
There is no such thing as shit taste. Only idiots who think everyone should have the same taste as they do.

Wow, 12k for Darkness! Hell yeah! now we have to wait for JoJo, the only one left who poses any danger to the best ecchi ever made.

Psycho-Pass is really doing better than expected just a month ago. Akane's moe-moe power?
I don't watch Hidamari but good luck getting 10k soon! That would mean outstanding !seven! >10k titles in one season.

I'm glad to see OniAi doing decent 2.5k. Even if ending revelation was the worst thing in whole series, I really enjoyed previous 11 episodes.

Over 2k for Busou Shinki is nice as well.

Even though the Fall Season does not have super-hit like SAO. It is still a plentiful harvest for good sellers with at least 6 titles (perhaps up to 8) selling >10k (the line for good hit) - GirlPan, Chuunibyou, Darkness, Gintama, Little Busters, JoJo and perhaps Magi and Hidamari too.

Somehow I was spoiled for that quite early in the series so it did not impact much for my enjoyment. In fact I heard that this is revealed quite early in the LN too. Anyway, I am glad to see it is making a sales comparable to NakaImo from the previous season. Both are the better performing ecchi/harem LN-adapted shows but somehow I found myself enjoying OniAi more.

It is selling at a similar level as Sky Girls. It may be coincidental given Sky Girls is several years old. But it is still intriguing to see the rough parity of sales for the two titles, with both based on a line of mecha-equipped figurines.

Right, I forgot about Magi, it might be eight >10k titles. Very good season sales-wise, Girls und Panzer should be over 20k soon as well. Maybe 25k in mid-yearly list? Amazing success for something deemed to be simply average before season started. Psycho-Pass and K with 7.5 are doing really nice too. I wonder how much PP will sell in longer run as it's kind of series which gathers more dedicated fans as it airs, we already see that by it exceeding our ~5k expectations we made in XI and XII.

I wish I knew about OniAi earlier, wouldn't be so disappointed in the end. Actually, I read about it being revealed quite early in LN just yesterday. Makes it easier to deal with but I'm still a little angry at author's lack of balls.
