It's the only Anime where I haven't picked up the name of every character and I am on episode 18. Every magic spell that changes the look of people is just plain confusing because of this. From episode 15 to 18 it have been happening all the time :/

Railgun does fill in a few blanks.
It also has a more 'fun' plot.
Railgun > Index

I'd recommend marathoning Index I, then Railgun, then Index II all within a month.
I didn't find it hard to keep up by just paying a some attention.
(Order I watched it in: Railgun, Index I, Index II)

I don't know all the characters names either, that goes for many others too, I usually just remember the mains and the major supporting ones.

And that angel fall spell isn't complicated.
