This was a really good and sweetly romantic episode; definitely one of the best so far. Following the emotional conclusion to the last episode, this one was terrific, as it felt appropriately restrained, extensively developing Rikka and her relationship with Yuuta. The emotions, in a slight contrast to the last episode, were of a thoroughly subdued nature, which superbly complemented the wistful atmosphere that accentuated their romantic development.

Though the first half was quite good, the latter half of the episode was fantastic, due completely to the heightened focus on a plethora of romantically meaningful moments. As such, Yuuta and Rikka's interactions throughout the latter half of the episode were exceptionally engaging and beautifully simplistic, especially the scene in which she forcefully stops Yuuta from leaving her towards the end, then proceeds to draw a symbolic mark on his hand, denoting the elevated level of their contractual connection, which alluded to the moment their eyes met through the reflection on the train window.

I loved the final sequence of scenes, in which Rikka realizes the extremely elevated beating of her heart and ponders the nature of her confused, blissful emotions, effectively noticing that her feelings are no longer derived solely from Yuuta's "Dark Flame Master" persona, which then leads into the terrific closing scene, as she quietly kneels beside Yuuta's bed and gently nudges the hair from his sleeping eyes. This was an excellently profound note of tranquility to conclude the episode on.

One of my favorite moments was the scene that involved Rikka briefly indulges her affections for Yuuta by smelling his shirt. Their conversation on the train was really significant, illustrating a transition into an evident sort of romantic connection between them, as it essentially propelled the mutual realizations of their feelings for one another, particularly Rikka. Also, the momentary flashback to Rikka's past was nice and quite insightful, as it potentially indicates that her attraction towards Yuuta unknowingly formed a barely perceptible spark in the earlier days of her seemingly forgotten youth.

Tooka's fight with Rikka greatly illuminated her own struggles in handling Rikka's delusional tendencies, which, up until this point, was an indistinct element to her characterization, since, due to her willingness to continually satiate that particular side of Rikka's personality, it wasn't entirely clear whether or not Tooka fully approved of these frequent excursions into fantasy. The visuals that accompanied this moment deftly illustrated Rikka's emotional, relatively traumatic complexities wonderfully, particularly with the highly effective use of minimalistic interiors within her former house, followed by the painfully gradual, corrosion of it's walls.

Although they were slightly less prevalent throughout this episode, Shinka and Sanae's noticeably developing dynamic is effortlessly enjoyable, rarely failing to deliver some of the best moments in each episode. As such, Shinka, though quite the mediocre character at the start of the story, has slowly developed into one of the best characters in the show, since the interesting aspects of her characterization are illuminated by her interactions with Sanae. I also really enjoy Kumin and Makoto's relationship, since it constantly teeters on the edge of their potentially mutual feelings being properly established. As such, it's a shame he didn't confess, but it definitely seems to be a foreshadowed occurrence in one of the future episodes.

The direction was solid, excelling in particular moments, such as the great bench scene, in which Rikka and Yuuta eat together, culminating with Yuuta feeding her a portion of his food. The framing of this sequence really lent emotional weight to these seemingly insignificant interactions. Although it wasn't quite as visually stunning as several of the earlier actions sequences, Tooka's fight with Rikka was exceptionally storyboarded and rather well-animated. The show's narrative is easily among the strongest, most consistently well-told this season, as it hasn't, as of yet, felt a misguided obligation to incessantly interrupt purely natural relationship development with a plethora of unnecessary diversions and tedious, contrived complications, such as the numerous love triangles that have unfortunately contaminated nearly every romantically-driven show that's currently airing. This considerably impressive narrative execution has allowed for an excellently nuanced, highly satisfying approach to storytelling.

All in all, Chuunibyou continues to impress, particularly excelling with it's rather intriguing story, extremely likable cast of characters and the gradually increasing focus on the development of Yuuta and Rikka's compelling relationship. Hopefully, though it remains rather unclear toward which direction the narrative will ultimately follow, it appears to be increasingly likely that Rikka will eventually be motivated by Yuuta to transition into a thoroughly self-aware maturity, finally relinquishing the naive, imaginative facade she's meticulously constructed around a refusal to let go of her well-worn adolescence. Perhaps that would be considered altogether too serious of an implication and an unnecessarily ambitious development for a show of this nature, but I'm quite confident that it would lead to the most satisfying result for Rikka's character development and, consequently, the narrative as a whole.

Man, I can't stand this cuteness xD, Rikka was just so lovely and innocent, too bad that I thought they were going to kiss this ep, but I guess it's too soon :P.
And finally, romance development, I've been waiting for this since the beginning.

Oh yeah! I also noticed something pretty cool. When Rikka had a flashback of when she saw him at school for the first time and he was doing dark flame master stuff, she didn't have her eye patch. It makes me wonder if seeing him made her want to be herself...

It was a flashback of when she saw him when she was younger, most likely when both of them were still in middle school and Rikka was probably visiting her sister. Just wanna point out, I called it!!! woot woot..., i KNEW Rikka must have seen him before when he was in 'Dark Flame' mode.

My thoughts on the episode now:

Blast reality; Burst it into shreds..., Banishment this world!

That fight between Touka and Rikka was epic just as expected. Didnt expect Rikka to win, but i would have liked to see it go a little longer and maybe see Yuuta jumping in at some point. As expected Rikka cannot handle the truth and breaks down then proceeds to run away. While i can understand Touka wanting Rikka to stop acting this way, I think she could be a little more gentle with her. Rikka is just too delicate.

Kumin being her over 9000 innocent self once more. While i dont mind Kumin hooking up with Isshiki, I would have rather it be Nibutani. I mean i hate love triangles, but only when it comes to the main pairing, side pairing are open game for that lol. Hopefully it shifts to this, because i have a sneaking suspicion that Shinka was the one who sent Isshiki the letter....

The train ride alone with Rikka and Yuuta cemented upon cemented mind set, that this is by far the best anime for this season and prob the year. DAT insert song!

Rikka and Yuuta alone in his house. This had to be the highlight of the entire episode. Rikka went into super-ultra-over 9000 moe overdrive here. Sniffing his shirt then having her heart go doki doki! was just pure win! Also watching that tv show! I think the ending scenes means she has come to realize what causes her heart to race and maybe share it when the one who causes it? Where is my damn time machine!!!!

All in all, a truly great episode once more (the best one so far). This anime has never disappointed me so far and i doubt it will in the coming episodes. Every week seems to get better and better. Gonna start crossing fingers and toes from now in hopes of a season 2...., these are the animes that deserve it.

Let's just say that they really dropped the ball on the music department and pacing, at least in the beginning. The music at the beginning where they explain the reasoning behind Rikka's syndrome totally did not fit wit the mood. I know that they are fighting, but why put an energetic song to an emotional situation... At least make it, a darker battle song instead of an upbeat, happy one...
The singing during the train scene also was far too loud and overpowered what the characters were saying in some instances. This is also why I dislike songs with lyrics in powerful emotional scenes. Music is an EXTREMELY important aspect of any kind of entertainment for me and easily break or make a scene.

I also did not like at all the scenes with Isshiki. He's a really boring character and his comedic scenes, which already have the problem of breaking up the flow of a heartwarming or emotional moments (random call in the middle of Rikka and Yuuta's dinner), are simply NOT funny.

However, they did redeem themselves with the great scenes when Rikka and Yuuta get home, when they buy stuff from the convenience store and when try and go to sleep. These were some pretty heartwarming scenes and do make up for the poor handling in the early part of the episode. This show really shines when it focuses on Rikka and Yuuta (and to a lesser extent Mori-sama for her awesome mood swings). I find Dekomori to just be irritating and Isshiki and Kumin to be extremely boring characters.

Also, was it just me or was there actually a slight dip in animation quality this episode?

Random aside: Bonus points awarded for Rikka in that black dress. To me, the mature look at that dress clashes so magnificently with Rikka's Eight Grader Syndrome.

Best.Episode.EVER! This episode was filled with romantic developments. Kumin and Isshiki are getting along quite well together. Even though Kumin is doing all the advancing and is a bit too much of an airhead, she's doing quite well. Isshiki failed horribly this episode though... He relies on Yuuta too much. He needs to grow a pair and just do it his own way. The main attraction of the episode is Rikka and Yuuta's development. Yuuta was a man in this episode. Instead of just leaving her alone to let her cope with her depression, he chased after her and even got onto a train with barely enough time to get on. Seems like Rikka and Yuuta are realizing their feelings for one another. Rikka being in Yuuta's house with just those two was so exciting. There were just so many developments that makes this an awesome anime. Yuuta being embarrassed when Rikka praised Yuuta's gun slinging contraption. He also blushed at the fact that Rikka's face was so close to him at the streets. Seems like they didn't notice that they had an indirect kiss, since Rikka bit a part of Yuuta's onigiri when it was half-eaten. Then, they get back to Yuuta's apartment and Rikka borrowed his clothes. Rikka smelling Yuuta's clothes and saying "it's Yuuta's scent" was just so cute. It was like one of those girlfriends smelling their boyfriend's clothes. Funny how Yuuta expected Rikka to kiss him (since she was watching a romantic drama before sleeping) but all he got was a mahou circle. Before they slept, Rikka reminisces about the events of meeting Yuuta and the fun they had together. Yuuta also reminisces about the way she is. In the morning, Rikka just went into Yuuta's room and stroked his head, while saying his name. Guess she finally realizes and accepted her feelings. Ugh.. I need more! This is just getting interesting! It's sad to know that it's ending soon but it's one of the best animes I've seen so far. :)

I hope so too, after such a tease. But I have a foreboding feeling that we are getting trolled next episode.

... I hope at least it doesn't fall into cliche misunderstandings.

BTW, is it just me or was Touka overdoing a bit the literal "beat some sense into her"... I mean, one thing is a slap and another a strong kick.

Definitely the best episode for me!

I didn’t expect such a good romance for this anime. Unlike many other harem animes in which heroines love a boy from the beginning without any special reason, Rikka’s love for Yuta sounds very true. Yuta is a really good protagonist.

I just want to know what were they saying before and after Rikka drew that symbol on Yuuta's hand.
Why was he blushing?
What the hell was going on.

He was blushing because he assumed that she was going to kiss him, since she told him to close her eyes and she was blushing herself. I bet that was her true intention, but she just avoided it.

This episode. All that Yuuta x Rikka. -keyboard smash- I AM 1000000000% DONE.

OH MY GOD, BEST EPISODE YET!!!!

the rikka X yuuta development this episode was just pure heartmelting GOODNESS!

damn, rikka's heart wasn't the only one racing. >.<
i was seriously getting SOOOO excited to see where this was going.
especially when rikka was talking about about her hormones going crazy, "butterflies in my stomach, heart is racing, READY TO EXPLODE?!?!"

they seriously had me squealing to death when rikka told yuuta to close his eyes :3
i wasn't surprised when nothing happened, but that ENDING!!!! :)

KISS HIM DAMMIT!!!!!!

not much of the crew, but still funny when they DID appear nonetheless

NEED NEXT WEEK TO ARRIVE NOW!!!!!!! Dx

Wonderfull episode, the best so far. I loved how they didn't ruin the drama by not making the battle scene full of flashy attacks all the time and even adding more drama into it. I also loved how Yuuta put an end in this fight, exelent character I must say. The romance was so adorable and teasing and that's what I was waiting for, it took years untill a good godamn romance anime appeared and f*** yeah! The world cant end this year, it's not fair! It's just not fair! T_T

Exactly! They still have four episodes and judging by every single romance I've seen on television, the main characters never get together the first 'tease' the show gives you. Can't wait for the last episode though!

Obviously everyone liked this episode. As of now, it has 104 people who rated it 5/5, and nobody rated it a 1/5 or 2/5.
I really like this series and always look forward to watching it. I like all of the characters (except Kumin, although I don't mind that much). I also like how Nibutani and Sanae always fight. I also like Rikka's older sister, even though she isn't seen as much.

I can't speak for Sa-Chan, but at least I couldn't; at least not when it's done in a cliched way. This was a funny show while it lasted, but I guess there will always be a cheesy, predictable, introspection where the show turns itself on its head and starts taking itself way too seriously for what it is, like all the second-rate Hollywood romantic comedies. 3/5
