Most people going into this movie will have never heard of Akira, They probably decided that if they based the movie in America it would draw a larger audience. If the heart of Akira was that it was based in Japan then I missed the point of Akira. I loved the rise and fall of the cocky Tetsuo. I loved the way, despite all that has happened, Kaneda goes back to save his friend knowing he might die in the process. I loved the mental breakdown of Tetsuo finding his powers. I loved the exciting bike chase scenes at lightning fast speeds.

All of these things can be done in America and I would be more than happy.

Then just copy that story format. Dont fucking call your movie Akira. That my buddy, is the point here.

I hate remakes in general. Are they really necessary, especially when the source material was great in the first place?

They always come off as an attempt to improve marquee value by using a memorable title while not actually being true to the source. The sci-fi genre is especially bad at this. The recent The Day the Earth Stood Still made me sad.

I know i will cry when Hollywood decides to remake 2001: A Space Odyssey. I am sure it will happen eventually, and i am sure it will be terrible. Just like that Earth Stood Still remake naikou mentions.

It is not unreasonable pessimism. No one involved with the project so far is impressive, and knowing Hollywood's track record with remakes and rehashes, it is becomes hard to be optimistic.

Uh, they havent even written the screenplay, let alone cast anyone. It'll probably piss off anime fans summer 2011.

There are two types of anime - almost as good as Elfen Lied, and not as good as Elfen Lied.

While it's been a while, so my younger self's opinion my be a steaming turd, I did feel that the plot and characters of the film were pretty mediocre, if not completely forgettable.

It does sound like the director has never heard/touched the manga (which I hear, was a great thing, and far more balancedl), and that'd be amazingly terrible of him.

Check here for the full article.

"According to the trades, Warner Bros. will turn anime artist Katsuhiro Otomo's six-volume graphic novel "Akira" into two live-action feature films, the first of which is being fast tracked for release in summer 2009. Each feature will be based on three of the books in Otomo's series. The story takes place in New Manhattan, a metropolis that was rebuilt after being destroyed 31 years earlier.

Dr. Strangefist is a huge fan of the 1988 anime and recently took a look at the script by Gary Whitta. He chimes in with his thoughts below."

What are your thoughts on this?

Well, Dr. Strangefist can go f#ck himself.
